Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

^It’s all over the news.

Associated Press of Pakistan

Latest off of GEO.TV on Aitezaz’s role at the scene:

LAHROE: Former federal minister, Dr. Sher Afgan Niazi has been rescued safely by President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Aitezaz Ahsan.

Enraged lawyers tore up Dr. Afgan’s clothes and attacked him by throwing stones and shoes.

They also shaterred the windows of the ambulance in which Dr. Afgan was being taken away from the site of the incident.

Earlier, a large number of lawyers laid a siege around the office of Dr. Afgan’s lawyer when he came to visit him.

The police present at the scene failed to create a safe passage for Dr. Afgan and he remained confined in the office for about three hours.

**Later, President SCBA Aitezaz Ahsan arrived here to control the situation and disperse the lawyers.

Although he asked the enraged lawyers and others to leave the place, they continued to wait for Dr. Afgan to come out.

Later, Dr. Afgan came out of the building and escorted by Aitezaz Ahsan. Struggling through the crowd they made their way to an Edhi ambulance with the help of police.

As soon as Dr. Afgan got inside the ambulance, Aitezaz Ahsan mounted the rooftop of the vehicle which was then driven slowly away from the crowd.

Later, Aitezaz Ahsan resigned from the post of SCBA President.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Why the so much hatred for the Free Media by the democratic party members.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Shame on the lawyers. Even Aitizaz Ahsan holds them responsible for their thuggish behavior. So much for people that are supposed to upohold the law. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

**Aitezaz holds lawyers, police responsible for Sher’s incident

**
LAHORE: Supreme Court Bar Association President Aitezaz Ahsan held the police partially responsible for the manhandling of Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi at lawyers chamber here.

Talking to Geo News, he said also the lawyers were involved in the whole episode of manhandling of Sher Afgan, over which he is really grieved at the event.

He said when he arrived at the lawyers chamber, where Dr Sher Afgan was besieged for at least four hours, there was less number of police personnel, adding when he took along Dr Sher Afgan with him, there was no driver in the ambulance.

He continued, at this, he mounted at the top of vehicle and requested the people there to move back; however the people kept smashing the ambulance.

Aitezaz said there were only 40 to 50 percent lawyers and the remaining people could probably be from agencies.
**
He said he tabled his resignation from Supreme court Bar in protest against lawyers’ involvement in the incident;** however, the lawyer movement will go on without fail and he would continue to support the cause of independent judiciary.

‘I will still have my role in the movement,’ he added.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Justice (rtd) Tariq Mehmood was on Geo earlier and he did not mince his words, when he said this will go in history as the Blackest Day in the decades old legal struggle for judicial freedom. He stated all the achievments of the last year plus have been tarnished by these black coated thugs in one odious criminal act, and asked how can any lawyers could ever show their faces in public anymore?

Unlike Aitzaz Ahsan, who has subsequently been backtracking on his resignation promise, Justice Mehmood laid the blame squarely on the lawyers, and no one else!

Aitzaz resigns but may change his mind

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

its so not funnie! i dont know about the guy...wat he has done 2 evoke such reaction but whatever he did this kind of reaction is wrong. It is really height of stupidity, lack of education and manners. The guy is 60 and a heart patient....to most of them he was their father's age and just imagine they were beating him with chappals and what not. I have watsoever no interest in politics but as i was flipping thru the channels i saw it since it was on every1 pakistani channel and it really made me feel bad about our country. What kind of an image are we projecting? :(.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Maham, this is the Ex CJ supporters version of Pakistan's democracy.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

^ hmm explain in a layman's words :D

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

No it is the milder version of what happened under Mush after 3 Nov. Nothing comes close to the brutality unleashed than and Afghan was part of it. That is not to say that i condone this action.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Munir Malik has now come and admitted that Aitzaz Ahsan's "resignation" was just a token gesture, and will not be accepted by his colleagues. Once again a few people fell for the lies of Aitzaz Ahsan and his not so gracious offer.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Boo hooo cry me a river! The man announced he will resign because clearly he didn’t appreciate what took place. It’s the others asking him to not quit and continue leading them. As of right now, his decision to quit stands.

Try asking Musharraf to offer that token of gesture; See if the current majority ask him to stay :hehe:

Jeez guys…lol

But i know how hard it is for you pro-dictator lot to give credit when/where it’s due, let alone acknowledge the atrocities committing on various occassion under the very illegal president. But i suppose then it was acceptable because the man in Khaki was running the show. His Holyness!!

can you say double-standards?

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

You are obviously not keeping up. Aitzaz Ahsan has now said on tv that he will decide in two days whether he will go through with his resignation threat or not. Some of his diehards have been taken for another ride again by his drama-baazi.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

^Look who's talking! Claiming PML(Q) will win overwhelmingly in every province and what-not.

That's called being taken for a ride. :)

Like i said, see if Musharraf can offer such a token of gesture!...NOT!

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Politics or principles of the lawyers’ movement

By Najam Sethi

The “lawyers movement” has been discredited by the hotheads in its midst. The responsibility for this lies squarely on those leaders of the movement who have been egging the lawyers on to confront and defy both government and parliament and take the law into their own hands in pursuit of their political goals. Clearly, the attack on Sher Afgan Niazi was both unprovoked and spontaneous. So those who are clutching at conspiracy theories to explain the atrocious behaviour of the lawyers are fooling no one but themselves. These include some of the leaders of the lawyers’ movement as well as the spokespersons of the PPP and PML-N. But no one is now ready to buy the argument that a weak and isolated Presidency is the source of such spontaneous acts of violence and conflict.

**The lawyers’ movement has long been characterised by self-righteousness and unaccountability. It has deluded itself into believing that it is solely responsible for the restoration of democracy. But credit for that belongs to the political parties, which participated in the elections and carried the transition to democracy forward. **

This delusion has made the lawyers’ movement arrogant and unaccountable. Yesterday’s violence against Sher Afgan Niazi is a manifestation of this aggressive streak in the movement that has been deliberately nurtured by some of the movement’s political leaders.

But lack of success in achieving its objectives has also created a high degree of frustration, as well as divisions, in the movement. There are some among them who want parliament and the new government to resolve the issue of the judges lawfully while others want a confrontation with government and parliament. Yesterday, the confrontationists clearly outnumbered the transitionists. Only Justice (r) Tariq Mahmud had the courage to tell the truth about the error of his community and say that responsibility for the ugly incident lay exclusively with his fellow lawyers.

Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan has resigned as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association in protest at the behaviour of his colleagues and followers. He would not have done that if he really believed that his colleagues were innocent. That should put paid to conspiracy theories about “outsiders and non-lawyers” in plainclothes provoking or “engineering” the onslaught against Niazi. This is a good decision. But Mr Munir Malik says that Aitzaz’s resignation is a “token gesture” taken in the heat of the moment and will not be allowed to stand. So we shall have to see whether politics or principles, truth or falsehood, will prevail in the end.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

This is the blackest day in Pakistan judiciary's history. The Free Media has made sure it will never be forgotten. Aitizaz Ahsan will now always be associated with the rampaging lawyers that almost killed Sher Afghan Niazi.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

Maham, it is disappointing that some people are using smilies to demonstrate some joy over the horrible attack on a former minister. I even saw these pictures being played on foreign media, who will now forever view Pakistan's lawyers through this odious act.

Re: Aitzaz Ehsan resigns

so aitzaz ahsan has taken his resignation back :hehe: this guy is a player, i bet you he organised it all himself, he should be in bollywood, definatly the srk of pakistan politics
