Leave Dr - Shaista alone - she is more bold , beautiful and successful than many of you down here
She is a household name - a symbol of energy and freshness

^ Some will always have a chip on their shoulder.
I find it amazing... the amount of energy people put into scrutinizing others....
Re: Dr. Shaista
some ppl are just chronic whiners.
Re: Dr. Shaista
I spelt scrutinising with a Z! I've been around you Yanks for too long.... :o
Re: Dr. Shaista
Having dealt with relatives who received incompetent medical treatment in Pakistan where diseases were not correctly diagnosed on time.....it makes me wonder how much of this incompetence is connected to a strained economy (lack of funds for medical technology, for example) and how much of it deals with the medical training and education.
I do not know Dr. Shaista. However, I'd find it annoying if someone attributes a professional label to themselves when they haven't had the practical experience to earn it. If you were a practicing doctor who retired, then you're able to tell people that you used to practice medicine. At least your former experience increases your validity in peoples' eyes. There's much that practical experience will teach you that you would not have learned from sitting in your classes. Plus, many working professionals (doctors, business men, engineers, IT analysts, teachers) attend seminars designed to develop their professional knowledge. If you've never put your knowledge to practical use, it's difficult to compare you with someone who does practice.
Nevertheless, sensible people will consult a certified and practicing doctor for their ailments as opposed to relying solely and heavily on a talk show host. :) And while Nadia Khan does provide beneficial segments on her show, the woman and her mannerisms irk me.
Re: Dr. Shaista
well we r just concentrating on female non-practicising docs here. do u know any male doc who changed his field? i know atleast two. i dunno how many others esp those in Canada/USA change their fields coz of certain restrictions n passing exam so to fulfil their family needs ASAP they just do any job they find which eventually change their field.
I like Dr. Shaista but i'll say it again, I don't like the fact that she and many other people who choose to do MBBS/MD change their field. They could've given someone else a chance to make a difference. NO its not about giving medic or helping someone out .. my thing is.. with medicine being so competitive in Pakistan, some needy as in financialy needy person could've really used that seat. My husband is a doc, all my siblings are my MIL and FIL are docs as well. I know they've worked hard and I see how much they love helping others and making a difference. If its just about making more money WHY WASTE THE SEAT. Everyone realizes that in Pakistan there is more money in media .. ok fine .. so lets not waste the seat and get admission in a college/university that gives degree in media/communication.
This thread I guess is not about hating her on personal level, but hating on the fact that many people like herself waste seats to have that DR in front of their name.
Yes, basically my response to those who think this is a personal gripe thread. It's not. I'm questioning, why we as society respect these sort of people by continuing to call them "doctor", why they resort to switching out of their fields, and how much of that is attributable to pressure from the in-laws.
And is getting a medical degree for girls just something to add to their rishtaa cv??
I didnt know who she is so I went googling. It sounds like she went to med school because this was what her parents demanded of her. This was not something that she chose to undertake. But it apprently gave her a springboard to do something that she truly loves to do. I have to admire her for that. And critisize parents for forcing their kids into things that arent appropriate - whether its marriage or career.
Annoying or not, this woman is one who knows what she wants and worked hard to get it. You gotta love that.
As far as wasting a med school spot, esp when pak is in such need of female docs...well this comes back again to the parents who force their girls there while knowing full well that they will never practice. The girls typically obey their parents yeah? Whether its mariiage or college. THAT has to change.
If the poor thing was forced into it, and doesn't really care for it, why does she still insist on being called Dr. Shaista whatever-her-last-name-is?
Then don't address her by that title!
If you plan on returning to practice, I can understand. If not, then I question your sincerity of pursuing the field in the first place, or I assume that you just had bad experiences with it and don’t want to do it anymore…or you have a crapload of malpractice lawsuits and they took your license away.
Yeah, I don’t buy the whole, well now my entire responsibility is my family. You balanced family and work when you were getting trained and practicing, and babies don’t stay babies forever - there is a short period of time where they need constant care and many places offer terrific maternity leave or part-time plans for new moms.

well said! :k:
Re: Dr. Shaista
^ Yeah she knows how to screw people over and still manage to be addressed respectfully by the entire nation as "doctor".
Gotta love the *%$#.

if she completed her medical studies then she has all rights to keep the doctor status! **
Re: Dr. Shaista
Quite the opposite, but shows how mature some people are. No, it's not an issue of bitterness over not getting into medical school, rather I think that if you are going to go through medical school, that is a PRIVELEGE and as usual, Pakistanis seem to think it is ok to abuse PRIVELEGES given by society.
Society says: You docs do a lot for us, and so in return we give you respect.
That is why someone with the title "doctor" gets respect.
Girls who think it is some joke and do it to get better rishtas do not deserve respect, regardless of how many runs they do through medical school.
Dr. Shaista is simply an example, that nationally speaking, no one seems to have a problem with women who go into it, do not practice, and end up doing something else with their lives, when clearly there is a crisis in Pakistan regarding health care providers.

well said. that is so true.
well said. that is so true.
Uh YEAH, my point exactly. She is not practicing, so what has she done for society that she deserves the title "doctor"?
And really, its not just her. This goes for every shmuck out there who takes up a seat in medical school in pakistan, because Papa knew someone, and is now not practicing because they're priveleged enough not to give a crap about the same society that gives them that title of respect.
Re: Dr. Shaista
OK we all have different view points but NO need to get nasty and personal with each other aight?

I mentioned in a previous post that when people enter the medical field, they are only 18 years old. And they cant drop out either. It's not america where you can change your major when you decide you don't like it anymore. At 18 years of age, you just do what your parents want you to.
Thers no guidance career counselors here in highschools telling you what to pursue. Unless you go into MBBS or engineering, you're not considered smart enough. So alot of people get into mbbs thinking its cool, doctors make money, save lives bla bla bla but later on they realize its really not something they wanted to get into. So they stop practicing.
Uh YEAH, my point exactly. She is not practicing, so what has she done for society that she deserves the title "doctor"?

You get a title after you get a certain degree. And i have seen her show a few times and i never hear her say "oh im doctor shaista". Other people call her doctor but she never brags about her being one. Atleast i havn't heard her say it.
And HOW can you even ask a question like what has she done for the society!? Entertainment is a huge part of society!
Just because you dont find it entertaining doesn't mean it isn't a good show. That show has the highest rating on ARY. Personally im not a fan of any morning show but that doesn't mean anything. Majority of pakistanis love her show. If it wasn't any good, it wouldnt be airing! People keep calling her live on the show countless times. She must be doing something right. Shes entertaining millions of housewives who tune into the show every morning! how can you say she isn't doing anythign for the society? Shes way more productive than tons of other men and women out there. Just because she's not sitting in some clinic, doesnt make her useless.
And again, WHY would someone practice medicine when another job is offering you MORE money?
Everyone works for money!
Im sure you would switch jobs in a heartbeat if someone were to offer you 8x more pay doing something easier and more fun!
I agree with most of what you say tammy except the part that you are taught nothing much despite being in the best govt med college? Maybe that's just an individual based remark? I finished my graduation from a good govt med college here in Lahore 6 yrs back and I gave up practicing anesthesia 3 years ago and without being in touch with books during this period, i can still manage patients(anyone in family or around who comes up for advice) as well as doing minor procedures like stitching a small wound or aspirating an abscess. That all depends on the amount of interest and concentration you've put in your course as well as on the institution as well.. Warna khud se books parh parh kar tau koi bhi doctor bunn jaye :)
Hey i agree with you. Im in a govt college and my sister is in a private one. The difference between us is that her school makes sure she does her work, attend the wards and classes, make presentations, present cases and alot of other stuff. For me, its just that i have to show up during exams. They dont make us do anything, but people who really want to learn do it themselves. So thats why i said mbbs is a joke meaning anyone can pass it whether they are hardworking or not.
Im not saying all the doctors are like that. Im sure you arent. I just meant that medical stdudents here can easily get away without putting any effort.
