Any reasonable human being can tell you that if the literal meaning could be either "hit" or "leave", then look to other examples in the faith to make a determination. Failing other examples, look to the verified example of our beloved prophet who lived the life of a devout muslim. Did he raise a hand to his women? Ever?

You should not be so quick to pass a judgement, sister. There are some cases which look obvious but they are not- In Pakistan, one should always consult a Islamic scholar(Moulvi) in these cases- thats the reason respectable Gen. Zia wanted to set up Sharia courts

Are you seriously saying that if a muslim guy beats his wife so harshly that he kills his own child growing inside her, that its because she must have done something horrible? If you found out your wife was doing something horrible, and she was 16 months pregnant, would you punch her in the stomach? Is that what Islam has taught you?
