Diff between Siwaa and Ilaawa

This is from my child hood memory.

There used to be a current affair show on PTV, by the name of Pas Manzar, hosted by this guy called Laeeq Ahmed. One day he started the show by saying that ‘I want to correct myself. In yesterday show I used the word ilaawa while I should’ve used the word siwaa’.

This must be 30 years ago min. To this day, I cant tell the diff between these tow words. Hope you guys can help.

Here you go:

Siwaa: You are mine and mine alone. Tum merey siwaa kisi ki nahi. Exclusive.

Ilaawa: Uske ilaawa aur bhi log the. Other than...meaning, in addition to.

BUt fist sentence, you can also say 'tum mere ilawaa kisi aur ke nahi'

sivaa OR sivaaye and 'ilaavah mean the same thing...they are both Arabic words. SIVAAYEis Hindinized version of** SIVAA**

So the host of that show was worng in replacing the word from ilaawa to siwaa?

I guess both are same words but should be used at certain places..

I think I am kind of leaning towards Niks definition.

Oss ke siwaa kisi aur ko bhejo (send someone else other than him)
Oss ke ilawaa kisi aur ko bhejo (send someone else except him)

second one sounds like the person is not even part of eligible people who can go. In first one, he is eligible but should not go.

Ok maybe I am complicating the heck out of this topic

zaraa saa farq hai

bina = without

**Binaa is a Hindi word

English definition makes sense, but again in urdu it's confusing.

yahaaN word SIVAA nahiiN hai bal k SAVAA hai...ya'nii a little bit more...ser pe savaa ser waali baat...savaa literally means QUARTER/EXCESS

han yeh bhii Ghalat ul 'awaam hai…maiN bhii bachpane meN savaa ek baje aur saaRhe do baje kahaa kartaa thaa gaaoN kii zabaan men** aRhaaii baje** (2.5) bhii kahtaa thaa. :smiley: :cb: whenever any kid said aRhaaii baje, older folks thought it was cute! :slight_smile:
