DG ISI being sacked?

Re: DG ISI being sacked?

You are either too naive or ignorant. Who could be more honest PM or even a simple politician Mohammad Khan Junejo in history of Pakistan? Does his insulting firing by General Mardood Zia-ul-Haq ring some bells into your ears?. Does humiliation by Mush to women folk of IK ring some bells into your ears?. mere khial main is khush fehmi se bahir niklain. IK is coming with the help of ISI. He will be easy prey to be kicked out sooner the difference created between them.

Sanity follows high drama
**It was a day of nail-biting suspense that followed a night of hectic political activity. But its denouement that came the same evening was surprisingly calm.

**The first strike of Wednesday came from Pindi. The Inter Services Public Relations, the military’s information wing, released a hard-hitting press statement that took to task the prime minister who had in an interview to a Chinese journalist on Monday inexplicably announced that the answers submitted to the Supreme Court by the Chief of Army Staff and the head of the ISI had not been filed following the rules of procedure.

That the military officers were not amused by this revelation was evident on Tuesday, but the hard-hitting statement that the ISPR released a day later took everyone by surprise. It said the allegations of the prime minister had “serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country.”

The press release set the channels ablaze. But what set them on fire were two other news items that came back to back.

**One was the news about a brigadier being posted to command the 111 brigade – that is historically moved to secure Islamabad when the military swings into action to send a government home and a general enters PTV to address his fellow countrymen.

****At around the same time, the prime minister in his infinite wisdom moved to sack the defence secretary whom he has already trained his guns on earlier.

**In the last week of December, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had thundered in the assembly that he would not tolerate a state within a state and had later claimed that he was referring to the defence secretary who had moved paperwork around without the proper authorisation.

By this time, analysts on both sides of the political divide were frothing at the mouths on television. Those with a soft spot for the military were predicting — without any proof — that the prime minister had given the post of defence secretary to Nargis Sethi, who is seen to be close to the government because she, unlike her predecessor, would sign the notification to remove the COAS.

Those in favour of the government were expressing horror and disgust at the shenanigans of an establishment that was going to send another elected government home. That neither had any proof and were simply crystal ball gazing deterred no one.

Political parties joined the circus. Those who were not talking to channels or holding impromptu media interactions huddled together to hold meetings on the fast changing situation.

But a few hours and innumerable breaking news alerts later, the man who had begun this current phase of hysteria appeared in front of the media and ended it.

Mr Gilani graced the launch of PTV’s sports channel and as he left he decided to share his views on important state affairs with reporters.

Denying that he was planning to send the COAS home, he also casually mentioned that the COAS had discussed the ISPR press release with him and the prime minister had no objections to the statement.

A damp squib once again or another interlude till the next crisis? No one will have to wait longer than the coming Monday. Till then, however, there may be a calm night or two in the fate of the Pakistani people.

PPP wants Shujaat to defuse tension
**LAHORE: The PPP leadership has requested PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who is considered to be close to the establishment, to help defuse tension between the government and the armed forces.

**This was confirmed by a PPP leader who told this correspondent that it would be a test for Chaudhry Shujaat`s skills.

Chaudhry Shujaat has earlier successfully played the role of a mediator between the PPP leadership and the military high command and he is expected to bail out the government also on this occasion, the leader said.

The tension between the two institutions mounted after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said in an interview to the Peoples DailyOnline of China that affidavits submitted to the Supreme Court by Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI Director General Lt-Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha on the memo issue were unconstitutional and illegal`.

Our party chief Chaudhry Shujaat is ready to mediate between the army and the government, PML-Q`s central information secretary Kamil Ali Agha told Dawn.

He said the PML-Q would not mind trying to bridge the gulf between the two institutions because it was in the interest of the country. `Nobody will like clash of institutions.

Mr Agha said Chaudhry Shujaat had only recently urged all the people concerned to exercise restraint and clear misunderstandings through dialogue.%between%

****ISLAMABAD: **Amid growing tensions between the civilian government and the military leadership, an unprecedented petition has been filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday to block any attempts by the government to sack Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha.

**
The petition filed by Advocate Maulvi Iqbal Haider, considered to be a dubious character by the Supreme Court (SC) and even banned from entering SC premises by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for filing frivolous petitions, was promptly accepted by the IHC.

The petitioner requested that the president and prime minister be restrained from taking any action against the army and intelligence chiefs by issuing an adverse notification against them until a final decision on his writ petition had been taken.

Seeking the judiciary’s intervention, the petition was filed hours after the Army warned of “grievous consequences” for the country, over criticism by Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani that the army and intelligence chiefs had failed to make their submissions to the commission through government channels.

The brewing tussle has already led to the sacking of secretary defense and triggered speculations that the government may take similar action against the army and intelligence chiefs.

Maulvi Haider filed the petition under Article 199 of the Constitution, naming eleven respondents including the president, prime minister, chief of army staff, director general ISI, chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), secretaries of cabinet division, establishment division, law and defense ministry, former ambassador to US Husain Haqqani and Pakistani American businessman Mansoor Ijaz.

Iqbal prayed to the court to declare that the president and prime minster had failed to perform their constitutional duties by disobeying the orders of the SC and the judicial commission probing the Memogate case.

Haider went on to add that the president had categorically declined to accept the SC’s decision and judicial commission’s finding in the Memogate case, whereas the prime minister had said “no one would be allowed to run state within a state” on the floor of the National Assembly on December 22, adding that both statements were in violation of Article 2A, 5, 9,25,62,63,189,190 and 204 of the Constitution and the oath undertaken by the president and prime minister.

Furthermore, the petitioner requested the court to restrain the government from implicating Mansoor Ijaz, the main accuser in the Memogate case, in any false cases upon his arrival and provide him with the Army protection during his stay in the country.

Re: DG ISI being sacked?

^^^

Moulvi Iqbal Haider is a joker.. let's not take this news seriously.

Judiciary has in fact given a free hand to the government to carry on with their tenure. They constituted a 7 member larger bench in NRO implementation case which will start the proceedings from zero starting from this monday. It means these proceedings will take a few months and govt. will go for the review of whatever decision comes out. It means the Swiss cases will get time barred..

Govt. is probably in the last few months of their tenure. Judiciary will just keep the pressure on the govt. to ensure free and fair elections. Any other matter is becoming irrelevant now...

Re: DG ISI being sacked?

can we have free and fair elections under the present set-up?

Re: DG ISI being sacked?

Free and fair elections at this stage means AZ-NS coalition, which ofcourse army doesnt want. If IK needs to win then there has to be a rigging.

Re: DG ISI being sacked?

PML-N can (and has) but PPP will never form an alliance with PML-N. They would rather sit in opposition
