you are the one who is saying one should ask them and yet you are speculating about how they didnt get any chance and that too based on your own understanding/thinking/opinion
we are no one to say that they were miserable, oppressed etc.
the problem with us is that we are way too biased because of our so-called pride of independence - we don’t realize that time was different than today, the norms were different, the culture was different you cannot and i repeat you cannot and must not apply your thinking and opinion of someone else
so as you said, you should have asked your grand mother, mom would you have preferred to not have so many kids and works and earned on your own etc. i bet she will not be able to give you an answer
