Re: Desi Fashion/Style Faux Pas:
when you join the real world and you reject desi after desi for a job because they simply are not polished enough ti be put in front of a client, then you may realize why I feel strongly about this topic.
when you try to give desis an edge because you hear complaints like oh desis dont help other desis. and then you bring them in for interviews and its a friggin trainwreck...what do you do then, tell the guy, listen take a shower, get your clotehs pressed, toss the 1970's style tie, trim your mustache, wear proper shoes..
I myself have refused to put a desi techie in front of a client just last week because the guy while technically competent, just was completely unaccpetable.
No one needs to look like they walked out of a GQ page, but one should not be so oblivious to what is expected in the society around them. It does not impact them only, it impacts others around them as well. sorry but stereotypes exist, biases get formed, and we can not feed into those.
in UK, aside from the racism part, our people gave the ppl good reasons to call em smelly..why, because they friggin are smelly.
when you watch english asian satire like Real Mccoy or goodness gracious me, they too poke fun at desi faux pas, ranging from losers acting ghetto to clueless wannabes.
This is different from being a fashion police and picking up on minute things because oh they are not in this season, or that they are not up on the latest style.
as long as ppl take a look around stop being so damn clueless, and pay a little attention to their surroundings and then a little attention to what they wear, how they wear it, how they groom themselves and how they deal with personal hygiene, I am fine.
everything that I have listed is not going to fly in majority of the workplace except at some starter level.
