Sara as far as I know, the best thing to do is have a sharai haq mehr taht should be paid to the grl at the time of nikkah. It's equivalent to a very small amount in dollars/rupees but then hey money doesn't guarantee a great married life anyway! :-)
Also, if your parent's happiness lies into this, let them decide! Sharai or not.. it's their call...you can do it for your daughter :-p

I discussed my haq mehr very openly with my fiancee and we agreed that I will get a diamondring both as haq mehr and wedding gift. thats fine with me. but his parents havent been involved yet so yes I am bit nervous on their reaction to it...
I am not bringing ANY jahez item with me at all!and thats what my dad told his parents before the mangni so they cud back off if they wanted to!

Whats the big deal..girl just names a price and if too high guy can say no thanx and continue wit his search to find a girl in his payable price range. Supply and demand ;) Price of girl goes up with decreasing supply.

We gave the groom a Movado watch, with sum gifts for the grooms family, is that jahez. They didn't ask for it, i dont think, our family has a habit of being generous with our gift-giving.

Yah thas technically considered jahez..plus watever u gave ur sister as part of her ewedding gift (clothes, jewelry, furniture, dishes etc). I don't think it's a really bad thing..as long as guys family doesn't start abusing that concept, like taking taking taking and giving nothing or being really greedy abt that stuff
