Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

i knowwww right! langdon should have “the jawline” with a disheveled look to him…no one coming to mind right now but i definitely didnt think it would be tom. he’s a superb actor though.
Oooooh i cant wait for this one. So much hype and secrecy about this movie…

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

yeah the only one I can think of is Mel Gibson from the "older" lot. But I think the prof is supposed to look a bit "aloof" which Tom does protray pretty well. I'm still gonna watch the movie :D

If anything, the book refutes the god-like status given to Christ by the Roman Church, which uses the crucifiction and sacrifice by Christ to get its own power over the masses.

Yep I remember thinking of this while reading the book.

When I was reading the book, the whole time I envisioned Harrison Ford in the role of Robert Langdon. The story-line and the character had all the classic trials and tribulations of an Indiana Jones movie. It was a bummer to hear that they've casted Tom Hanks for the role. Oh well! Saby bhai assures me that Tom Hanks will ace the role (again), so fingers crossed! :)

Harrison Ford! he will never be too old…

CANNES, France - “The Da Vinci Code” drew lukewarm praise, shrugs of indifference, some jeering laughter and a few derisive jabs Tuesday from arguably the world’s toughest movie crowd: critics at the Cannes Film Festival.

The year’s most anticipated movie, “The Da Vinci Code” was a generally faithful adaptation of Dan Brown’s monster best seller, spinning a murder thriller that stems from a cover-up of secrets about Christianity’s roots.

While readers worldwide devoured the novel, reaction from Cannes critics ranged from mild endorsement of its potboiler suspense to groans of ridicule over its heavy melodrama.

“It’s a movie about whether the greatest story ever told is true or not, and it’s not the greatest movie ever screened, is it?” said Baz Bamigboye, a film columnist for London’s Daily Mail. “As a thriller, well,” he continued, shrugging.

“Maybe the next day I’ll forget about it,” said Igor Soukmanov of Unistar Radio in Belarus. “But today for two hours it was good entertainment. … As a Hollywood movie, it’s a very nice picture.”

Critics got their first look at “The Da Vinci Code” a day before its world premiere at Cannes on Wednesday, when it also debuts at theaters in France and some other countries. The film opens worldwide over the following two days, including the United States on Friday.

Directed by Ron Howard, the movie stars Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou as strangers hurled together on a frantic quest for the Holy Grail after a series of murders is committed.

The filmmakers add some twists and variations here and there, but the general thrust of the novel remains intact, including its theory that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were married and had a child, which has prompted denouncements from many Christians.

The Cannes audience clearly grew restless as the movie dragged on to two and a half hours and spun a long sequence of anticlimactic revelations.

“I kept thinking of the Energizer Bunny, because it kept going and going and going, and not in a good way,” said James Rocchi, a film critic for CBS 5 television in San Francisco and the online outlet Cinematical. “Ron Howard makes handsome films. He doesn’t make bad ones, but he doesn’t make great ones.”

THE DA VINCI CODE
• Video: ‘Hardball’ visits Opus Dei’s headquarters
• ‘Da Vinci Code’ misses mark for Cannes critics
• ‘Da Vinci’ undermines faith, survey claims
• Albinos condemn ‘Da Vinci’ killer as stereotype
• Opinion: Scientology? How about Opus Dei
• Cardinal: Viewers will see ‘Da Vinci’ as fact
One especially melodramatic line uttered by Hanks drew prolonged laughter and some catcalls, and the audience continued to titter for much of the film’s remainder.

Some people walked out during the movie’s closing minutes, though there were fewer departures than many Cannes movies provoke among harsh critics. When the credits rolled, there were a few whistles and hisses, and there was none of the scattered applause even bad movies sometimes receive at Cannes.

Critics singled out co-star Ian McKellen, playing a wry Grail enthusiast who joins the search, as the movie’s highlight, injecting hearty humor and delivering the most nuanced performance. Paul Bettany added a seething mix of tragic pathos and destructive zealousness as a monk assassin who carries out the slayings.

Bamigboye said all the actors were solid, but enthusiastically added, “I’ve got to tell you, Ian McKellen steals it. He slices all the crap away.”

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

I think it is expected for a movie based on controversial half factual fiction. If they ruined the thrill the novel offered, it will be a big dissapointment.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

Mine too! I can’t remember the sequence of events from da Vinci. Both books were so similar, nearly identical in narration.

I’m very disappointed with the casting as well. Hanks is a good actor, but just not the guy I had in mind while reading it. Wasn’t Sophie’s character supposed to be that of a ‘voluptuous’ woman? This girl they’ve cast is skin and bones…I know I’m being picky here..but overall..this movie just doesn’t seem to match up with what I imagined. Will still watch it though

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

1 day left before the movie will be released...it's got bad reviews at the cannes...i'm so afraid to watch it now...:( but i'll watch it anyway.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

Darn it.
Bad reviews here for the movie
Said that you could easily fall asleep in it.

I hate it when they screw up the movie while the book was really good.
I blame it on Hanks and the lack lustre cast.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

I don't necessarily believe all the bad reviews. I will still watch it. It is possible that the reviewers are giving it a bad review cause of their own personal opinion on the subject of the story. They may not be objective opinions.

I started reading the book yesterday and will hopefully finish it by next week, before we watch the movie.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

 now my anticipation has gone down the drain after the reviews :bummer: :smack: why O’ why they had to screw up the movie so bad :o

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

mehnaz i started reading the book just now too...i better start reading more then 2 pages a time or by the time i finish the book, movie will already be on dvd

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

the book is a REAL fast read guys so you shouldn't have a problem finishing it up within a week! I think the book itself is so fast paced that maybe the reviewers think the movie doesn't live up to all the action present in the book and of course too much hype turns out to be deterimental for the movie at times :-(

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

I fnished the book in one night and two days :Snooty: I was awake till 4:00 am that night.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

I thought Ahmedis claim that they follow the same Islam?

If the paralell theory is a) plausable and b) respectful, then I doubt there would be a single wimper of protest.

That there are theories that Islam was simply a ploy to cover for other political ambitions is in fact the standard explanation in orientalist literature, rather than the exceptional. Again, not a peep.

The cartoons were diffeent both in their nature, and in their intent.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

The book is an easy and fast read.
My 13 year old niece borrowed it last week and I suspect she's done with it by now.

Mehnaz,
You are right. I don't like to believe the reviews....especially in a case like this one where it is politically charged. But more often than not, the reviews are accurate.

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

Faisal-- I have full confidence in Tom hanks abilities but damn the reviews :(. anyways hope it turns out to be another emphatic performance by Hanks.

and shweetdreamz, Ford IS too old now :p

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

I still need to read the book.. :smack: but haven’t got time to get it.. :bummer:

Re: Da Vinci Code Movie (Release Date) Friday May 19 2006

I'm nearly half way through the book. I already know that no matter how fabulous the actors are, they simply cannot translate this movie onto screen and have the same effect as the book. :(
