Cursing/Abusive Language?

How do you deal when people use the dirtiest curses in such casual conversation? Like every second word out of their mouth is bh or something? I can understand when someone is angry, they might throw in a swear word, and i do that too…but otherwise, using curses just as if it’s another word? I hate gaaliyan, esp punjabi/english ones…I know after 20 odd-years I should be used to it, but i STILL hate it..I can’t just block it out or deafen myself to it. You know you can’t fix the problem when others do it (other than move out and marry someone who doesnt curse :o) but how do you cope with it? And..I know I curse alot on here (i dont’ regret it when I’m angry) so I know it’s not just a problem, with others, I do it myself too, so i’m not trying to be a hypocrite or anything. but yea if u think u curse alot in “normal” speech, how do u stop it?

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

I would answer, but i’m not in the best of moods today. :aj:

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

Gosh, this thread brought tears to my eyes.

I don't think one can stop it unless the person who curses wants to stop their own behavior. If I ignore the person then it usually has me pissed off and the other person gets away thinking whatever they said was right. I can't ignore their behavior forever sometimes it just gets to you. I usually tell the person to stop and if they don't then I repeat whatever they are saying. It still doesn't work. Nothing seems to work.
But stopping yourself from using profanities...I know a person who curses like crazy and I remind myself that I will not become that person. It works most of the times.

Good luck. =)

Jion the club.. :teary2:

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

well for girls its easy to make any one stop swear.
when some one swears--just repeat exact same words.
No one like to hear a girl swearing. So he/They will be care full.

Or when some one else swear in front of u and person in question say some thing
"stop swearing like low lifes"

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

F*** man... what a sh*tload of motherf***ing half-ar*es

^ If that's the kinda thing you're talkin' about then perhaps the best way is to gently remind the person that he might be influencing someone (you know better who it is) else with this too. If they're a normal understanding person they should stop--at least for that moment.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

this is a very common trait in Pakistani men…i hate it too..Alhamdolillah no one in my house has this problem..but some men in my extended family do that…and yes, it is very irritating.. :grumpy:

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

Kino…why :teary1: ?

I know I have control over my behaviour and no one elses…

I just realize, i know how disgusting and horrible it sounds wehen other ppl curse every two words, so I dont want to be one of those ppl (not anymore:().

I dont’ want my kids to be cursing, thankfully my inlaws are NOT like that!!! so that’s one thin that’ll help me..

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

I too… absolutely hate it when people curse. Throwing out a curse word here and there on occasions is tolerable…but I cant handle it if it’s every other word.

If it’s a guy (which is typically the case) that curse’s in front of me constantly…either I’ll just walk away in the middle of the convo (if its a group convo) or I’ll tell him frankly…" i cant talk to you until you stop cursing"…If I am really outraged then I’ll tell him “have some respect …especially in front of women”

sara…stopping yourself from cursing once it becomes a habit is a very difficult task I think…BUT it can be done. Perhaps everytime a curse word is about to come out of your mouth you can use a word to replace it..i tend to use words like “friggen” …“witch” “stupid”..“dumb”…in our home…these are considered curse words :cb:

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

stop worrying abut that.
Once you have kids you going to be much more affirmative, like a “sheerni”

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

^ in reference to the above quote....sara it's amazing how people can change for their kids.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

aray, if I say WTF here, i get my post removed.. :bummer:

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

Just tell them that you're comfortable with such talk.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

Generally, n I repeat 'generally', I see Americans or people living/from America tend to use foul language very much.

Even family movies n things like that are full of that.

I'm not implying that no one in , say Pakistan or UK or any other country does that....they do, I know. but its not considered as normal as for Americans....n i see this trend among many guppies too. Even some otherwise very decent people don't think its bad.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

I disagree, in most punjabi families, cursing is considered very normal. GENERALLY speaking :p, at least thats the information i have gathered from...living with my parents, living IN daadkay, living in Nankay in Pakistan, visiting dadkay in pakistan, talking about this with my friends, and yesh in my very own home.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

As I said earlier, I’m aware..

But you know its looked down upon …noboday thinks it normal , well ‘generally’ :hehe:

The most I’ve heard in my bachpan is , ‘dafa ho jao’ / badtameez/ museebat/ n that is in extreme anger…

But for Americans… well, not exactly cursing perhaps but every other person likes using butt/arse/ ****/ bi..h n what not…once you are comfy with these…you don’t mind using the hard core ones.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

Afia baji some kashmiris have Butt as a last name.. it's not a swear :p

I have never heard anyone using foul language at my house.. whenever my sis and I fought the worst that came out of our mouth was churail for each other and trust me it was a big curse for us sisters.

One of my friends uses the F word when angry but not in front of me because the first time she said it, I had tears in my eyes just because I wasn't used to it and since then I have never heard her saying this word in front of me.

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

All same here :k:

we can’t even say shuttup in our home .. specially when parents are around. I must say I have really GOOD control over my temper n cursin. I don’t appreciate myself cursin nor I appreciate anyone cursin infront of me

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

Honestly… I never understood the science behind “foul language”… words are words… they refer to specific meanings and ideas, how are they good or bad? Its human psychology… pushing unconfrontable ideas and their words under the rug, making them “forbidden” or “wrong”, which in turn encourages people to use them in rebelion when angry. Really, just ignore them and live on… if nobody really cared every time someone said a “bad word”, nobody would bother saying it. :naraz:

Re: Cursing/Abusive Language?

i dontl like swearing myself....cant remember the last time i swore at anyone...and i dont like it when people swear too...i dont think theres a need for it....anything that can be said in a bad way can also be said in a good way....and would have the same or better results.
