Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
Desi_beauti, keep at it until you find the right one! And you’ll know when its the right one- it’ll fit amazingly and you’ll feel great in it! I know friends who’ve tried on at least 50 dresses before finding The One. And take one person with you who’se opinion you trust. i’ve been on shopping trips with friends to find The Dress and its always more difficult when you have two or three people there offering different opinions.
here’s a listing of bridal stores in the UK- Google
browse the websites everyone’s recommended and the dresses- when you find ones you want to try, note down the brand name and dress number, and then call these stores up to see if they carry the line.
Bustles are basically there to make it easier for you to move if you have a long train and/or a heavy gown. Some brides with chapel length gowns in lighter materials like raw silk prefer to have it unbustled through the evening, other brides find it easier to move when its bustled- it still looks like a ballgown but you’re not dragging a train behind you. its entirely your choice.
I did not find any light pink or peach ones :(.
Yeah I know I gotta try on a million more dresses lol. I dont live in the UK though. But thanks for all of your help!!
My problem is, I can try something on, and LOVE IT! But than as I am looking at it, more and more, i will find a million flaws with it. I am very indecisive ![]()
Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
My fiance really likes this style! What do you ladies think? I would obviously add sleeves and kapra to the back and front of the dress to cover up my back and cleavage?
Also I was thinking, that dresses that are really poofy at the bottom (like the disney princess dresses) might not look as good with sleeves VS something that is a little bit more form fitting and less poofy at the bottom.
Here is an example below. This would not look as good with short sleeves because it’s a huge dress.
I dont know, maybe it’s just me? What do you guys think?
I think cover ups are horrible, and lace is out of the question. I would definitely have to add sleeves to any dress that I buy.
Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
I dont like it unless your doing a complete gorafied walima ie garden wedding, white pink flowers everywhere, no asian twist to the weddng then it will work and be nice!
I dont think the two will collaborate well if you want best of both worlds. I just dont see it working.
Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
Really DB?? A western bridal gown? The dresses in those picture are stunning but I agree with DF about that. Are you going to be purchasing the dress from a white bridal shop or will you be recreating it from back home? Even with the lace and gorgeous details that white gowns have, what about all the kaam and heavy details that go onto our clothes. I just think that its to western and maybe thats just me but I don't see it working either unless your groom is non-Pakistani and half of your crowd will not be either. I don't know, I don't see it mixing well either.
Are you going to have a dupatta made for it? or a veil?
I would have to agree with you - in my mind, sleeves would look better with a dress that is more form fitting and less poofy at the bottom. I like the dress that your fiance chose - but I like the dresses that you were liking even better. But I think the main thing is that all of these dresses are similar in style in regards to their cut… they are fitted on top and throughout the body and them flare out (or pouf out). Its a very flattering style. I think a princess style ball gown might be a little over the top - But check out Nilofer Shahid’s Western Gown in her Noor Jehan Josephine Collection of '09. Here is the link: http://www.meeras.biz/# - Enter the site and the first couple pics that will flash on the screen is the pic of the ball gown. This is the only pic of it that I could find on the net:
- obviously only one sleeve on the dress and only the upper portion of it. But go to the website and you can get a better idea of what a poufy dress looks like and u can kinda imagine it with sleeves too.
But as I said earlier - I think you are right that sleeves will look better with a more fitted style of dress.
And yes - cover ups are really blah and not the biggest fan of adding sleeves of lace either (especially if there is no other lace found on the dress). Adding actual sleeves made of the same material of the dress will make it look more cohesive and elegant.
My mom is an excellent seamstress mA and sewed my prom dress her self … but the style of the dress was similar to what you like and she obviously sewed the dress so that it had sleeves on it. It looked amazingly elegant and to this day (prom was over a decade ago. lol) people still ask my mom and me from time to time to show them the dress because it came out so beautiful ![]()
Okie I completely understand what you are saying, I have it all worked out, but I cannot explain it quite yet, because I have everything planned in my head, but not confirmed. So ladies, give me about two weeks and I will explain it to you, and let me know your opinion after that.
Same thing. I will explain it to you after I get some stuff sorted out.
I will be wearing long veil, my crowd is mixed. Half are Pakistani, and my half are Americanized Pakistani that are used to seeing this, and about one forth of my half are American.
The dress that I have tried is gorgeous!!! It definitely does not need kaam!!! I will try to find a pic of it. But im not sure If I am going to go with that, because it’s MAD expensive!!!
Yes thanks for the advice. Where do you live? Maybe your mom can sew one for me?
Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
If you really have it planned, a fusion wedding would be fun but I really don’t like the poofy ones at all. I think a modified mermaid style would work really well. I saw a white bride who wore a coloured orange veil to her American-Indian Fusion wedding and looked
, so, I guess anything goes if you are comfortable with what you are wearing.
Anyways, I think, you should consider looking at gowns that already have sleeves, so you would know how the sleeves would look with the neck-line. I think long sleeves would gel well with a modified-mermaid style. You just need to pick the right neck line. I also think that adding sleeves would be a hassle, a matching lace bolero jacket would work amazingly well.
Disregard the colour of the following ones. I am just posting them for the sleeves.
Even though this one has sleeves/jacket, I don’t like the overall look and style of the skirt
the colour!:
BTW, while you are browsing, look through long bridesmaids gowns as well. They are mostly in colour (if you want pink/peach) and cheaper, too.
Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
Yes I agree Mahi. I want a nice ruched mermaid dress. But its so hard to find american dresses with sleeves, im so turned off by this im considering going back to a lengha :(
^please do!
I think a lehnga would look much better....I've seen western gowns look nice on desi brides TWICE. Once was a desi VJ who wore one at a reception party, but it was also strapless, fitted etc and she had the body (and guts) to pull that off. The other was a guppan who posted her pics and as far as I remember, she had it made in Pakistan so it was a gown with sleeves that actually looked good... but it was also culturally appropriate because her husband was not Pakistani. she wore a traditional red jora on her baraat and her husband wore a sherwani, and she wore a white wedding dress on her valima and he wore a suit.
I wanted to wear a white wedding dress for a while too until a couple of good friends told me I would "look like a tool." hehe...well anyways, I think most gowns in the west are really pretty but then they look awful with sleeves. Unless you're getting it made in Pakistan, I would say just stick with a lehnga but maybe do it in a cream or pearl color.
on a similar note, funny that most of us think that white girls can't pull off OUR outfits but we think we can pull off theirs.

Awe you are welcome! I live in the middle of nowhere upstate NY. I'm not sure of this but I would think that My mother would probably definitely consider sewing you a dress of your choice as long as you were able to make the trip up a few times for proper fittings and trials. The problem would be in regards to the kaam on the dress. It would take her way too long to do that. Is there someone else you know that can embroider, do beadwork and such?
It took my mom an entire year to sew my elder khala's bridal lehngaa... she did all the beadwork, embroidery, etc. herself by hand - all her design. That is the only reason why I know that this stuff takes a long time. Ha - the two sisters still talk about what a massive (but special) project that was that my mom had undertaken. But it was all completely my mom's vision and style. This lenghaa was actually the "final project" for some college course she was taking. ha.
Do not give up hope!!! there are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many bridal stores out there and you have a million more to try on! As soon as you enter the store, first thing: ask if they can sew sleeves onto a dress you like. Sometimes its not the bridal store itself, but the desiginer of the bridal dress that will do this for you.
Re: Considering wearing an American bridal gown
^ Punjabi rose..i'd love to see ur mom's work. :)

I think this would work! I have family in Port Chester. I am definitely going to go back and forth for my wedding planning. I could definitely get the kaam done from Pakistan and maybe your mom do the stitching.
Can you PM me your email address so that I can show you pix of what I have in mind, and you can give me a quote?

haha yeah. I totally agree! I've tried on so many dresses in the past two days that I was seeing dresses everywhere lol.
I think it is best to wear a lengha, and maybe give it some american features.
Thanks for all of the advice ladies.
