Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

Does that vary from region to region and it changes after passing of time?

Honour and Honor killing in tribal areas show that how exploited this sensitive concept of chastity there. ‘Ismat’, ‘Izzat’ ‘Lajja’, ’ laaj’ are very fragile concepts in our part of the world.

Have you read about Chastity belts? Is it a myth or satire?

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

Oh dear. Where to start?

In my experience, it most definitely varies from region to region. I think it does change with the passage of time but how much and how quickly it changes depends on the culture.

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

any examples to corroborate the statement.

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

Sarah Palin welcomed her daughter boyfriend at Republican National Convention… Her daughter was impregnated by her boyfriend. Sarah Palin was also vocal on pro life stance and now she is grandmother of illegitimate child of her daughter. The concept of chastity is very interesting in American culture :hmmm:

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

I read somewhere that in west girls who abide by eastern concepts of chastity are considered abnormal / alien.

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

In circumstances where replying to na-mahram's salaam is considered as unchaste, in those societies ladies are considered as properties.

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

In Afghanistan, cultural notions of chastity are linked to honour, particularly among Pashtuns, and this is quite ingrained in our culture. Even things which most people consider minor, such as staring at a woman or asking about a woman you don't know, can result in problems as this calls into question the reputation ("chastity") of the woman in question and of the man staring/asking. From personal experience, this differs quite a bit from other cultures in the region in that, although these still have notions of chastity, they do not take it to such lengths.

People living abroad are far less sensitive about things of this nature but there are still remnants of these notions, indicating that they do change over time, albeit slowly and not completely. For instance, when meeting someone and asking about how they are, you do not ask about their female relatives (if you're a man) as this is considered rather impolite (and offensive to some people). If you must, you would not ask "how is your wife/sister?" but rather "how is your family?"

In contrast, in other cultures, notions of chastity change rather quickly. Take for instance, the country of Ireland. Ireland is a Catholic country and was, in decades past, extremely conservative and had a very strict notion of chastity. At one point, dating, women socialising with men in public, and women working outside the home were looked down upon. In a matter of decades though, this has changed and although Ireland is still somewhat conservative, these things are no longer frowned upon and no longer call into a question a woman's "chastity."

Re: Concept of Chastity in different Cultures

I think most of desi people are not comfortable to take names of ladies in their family in public. May be its also link with chastity. Interestingly, Arabs had / has this traditions of naming their daughters as Umm e Kulthoom, etc
