Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

so I am assuming u just want to be around devon area

1) usmania is good- among teh few pakistani places I can actually take clients to
2) khans BBQ- best tikka in devon, and theri forntier beef rice is phenomenal, excellent for breakfast with omelette paratha
3) JK kebab house- excellent kababs
4) ghareeb Nawaz- not the cleanest place around but excellent biryani and kebab rolls are excellent
5) tahoora- fior get mithai..just one word Bun-Kabab...reminds me of the bun kebabs at college canteen in pakistan :) just better
6) Sabri- still the place for Nihari, not too fond of their kababs, biryani is good also
7) Ghaseeta Khan- haleem is excellent, rest is okay
8) bhabhis kitchen, wide variety of kulchas and breads, food can be made as hot or as mild as u want, closer to home cooked taste than most restaurants. can get things like sarson ka saag.
9) shahnawaz- if you like hyderabadi food, and they have an excellent shrimp dish.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

Chicago style pizza..giordanos, uno, lou malnattis.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

Thanks Fraudz - this is very helpful. I’ll try to make it to all the one you mentioned.

I didn’t find couple of them on Zabiha, so did a search on Internet to find thier addresses. Looks like Devon is almost 20 minutes from downtown Chicago. Are most of these places pritty close to each other?
For those who are interested, here’s a picture of Ghaseeta Khan

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

yeah they are all within 6-7 blocks of each other.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

I just called Khan's to see if they serve breakfast on weekdays. He said they don't even serve on weekends. I was so looking forward to it :(
Any other place you can recommend for desi breakfast?

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

I can't believe nobody mentioned "italian express" the spicy gyros are to die for--i don't live there anymore but that is my first meal after stuffed pizza every time i go---can't find either in Texas

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

must have changed it, i used to go there for omelette parqathas on weekends

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

because we were talking desi food, not italian food, not that gyros are italian :)

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

If u are craving for Pakistani food at 4:00am then Lahore Restaurant is open from 5:00pm--5:00am (6:00am on Sat)....devon's only Pakistani LATE NIGHT place....Located about half block west of Ghreeb Nawaz......and nothing tastes better than a Charrgha and a Naaan at 4:30am :D

One good place is Bismillah resturant which is actually Off devon (about a block south of devon on Ridge)...Nice food....but not enough seating available.....but food is still very good!

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

If Halwa Pouri is what you want...then the best place for Halwa pouri is chicago is not on Devon....its a place called Shaan Resturant its located on 5060, N Sheridan Road...basically a block south of Foster on sheridan...its about half way to Devon from Downtown...and trust me.....they have THE BEST Halwaa Pouri in chicago.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

yeah I too loved italian express gyros but I heard they got closed or something...
And I don't know why they had named their resturant iltalian express, they didn't have any italians food. It was gyros and all desi food.

Oh I am forgetting that halal peproni, maybe they call that italian...lol... but yeah they had good gyros.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

they have an italian express in naperville area now in case u are craving spicy gyros. btw u can get spicy gyros at browns chicken on devon as well.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

well it wasn't really spicy but the meat was good, juicy, flavorful, and they were kind of close to authentic.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

yup, same at browns chicken.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

We had a blast in Chicago over the thanksgiving weekend. Its a beautiful city with an awesome downtown.
As far as the desi restaurants go, here is my review:
1. Sabri - The nihari was very tasty and the best I've had in any restaurants in America. Their naan was served hot and soft. Their falooda was pretty good too. The ambiance and service was a lot better than I had expected. Actually it was a lot better than many restaurants I've been to here. (Score: 8/10)
2. Usmania - the ambiance was good, but the food was just average...actually it was just OK. I don't think I would go there again. (Score: 6/10)
3. Khan BBQ - This place rocks. The food is awesome and the cooks working there seemed highly trained and very professional. This place is a must if you love BBQ. Try out their tikkas, kabobs, parathas, naans, frontier chicken with rice and everything else they have on their menu if you have space. This might be the best place to eat at Devon. (Score: 9/10)
4. Ghareeb Nawaz - if you are on a tight budget and not too picky on taste then this is the place to go. Their serving size was very generous and the food was pretty decent. The owner was very nice. (Score: 7/10)
5. Hyderabad House - since they were the only place that were open for breakfast on a weekday we went there and had parathas with beef, kabab, chicken and omelate and for desert there was double ka meetha. Their food is very homestyle and pretty good. Their service was good too. (Score: 7/10)
6. Tahoora - Thier halwa poori breakfast on weekend was awesome. Their paratha rolls and samose were good too. (Score: 8/10)

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

I wish you had responded before we left :~(
We'll definitely try it out next time we're there. Can't wait to go back there again :)

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

sky.. thank u for helping chicago economy :D

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

My pleasure. Make sure you guys put it to good use and make some improvement before I come back. :D
I was really impressed with how nice the downtown was. I think it was better than Manhattan in most aspects. The Museums, Sears tower and shops on Michigan Avenue are worth visiting.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

sky I am on a campaign to fix our traffic problem, due to my nonstop bythycing and moaning about it the governer has made many easy pass lanes on highways..I will continue to moan and groan about traffic, and once that is solved i will complain about weather, we in chicago need to release as much CFCs as possible, its is our patriuotic chicagoan duty to increase global warming :D

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations

What kindaa campaign are you on?
