Try the Udipi on Devon. We went there a few months ago while visiting and the food (all vegetarian) and service were great!. Prices are very reasonable too.

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
Try Bismillah Restaurant on Devon and Ridge. Their chicken boti rolls are SO YUMMY and so huge that you probably won’t be able to finish the whole thing! :k:

Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
where on devon can I get fresh sheermaal now? the place where khan BBQ is now . the former hoem of desi island and god knows what all, there used to be sheermaal house a few years ago. now I dont know where i can get fresh sheermaal.
anyone know?
btw I hope that khan BBQ survives, that corner location hasbeen like musical chairs for failed restaurants,
what was the one before khan bbq, the place where u could sit on takhats and divans and eat, it went out of business before I could even try it.
lastly, do try chopaal restaurant, good kababs, and the best daal fry I have had anywhere, devon, london and even karachi.
Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
The frozen ones they sell at grocery stores has fulfilled my need for sheermaals. When they're heated up in a pan they are very fresh and just as good as ones you find in restaurats. My favorite thing to go with them is either korma or galawat ke kabab.
I hope that khan bbq stays too, because it is the most exciting place to eat at Devon. There were quite a few large familes when we were there and the place seemed busy. All the food was made fresh on order.
Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
sky well khans BBq has been around for sometime. I would say atleast 5 years so theyhave passed the biggest hurdle. I love that place.
now as far as sheermaal. forzen ones work too u are correct :)
Since the last post was in 2007. Let me update this a little.
Sabri was burnt down & has re opened right across where they used to be. Although the food is yeah good (maybe), I m an anti sabri person. They suck up to goras & their staff is way too chichora with Desis. I think Usmania has better nehari than Sabri. Their is also another Sabri in Lombard now with a banquet hall.
Usmania (desi): Chicken Biryani, Chicken Boti, Brain masala( off the hook), Chicken Makhni, Nehari, Naans r the best in chicago.
Chinese Usmania (right where old Usmania used to be): Def. Desified Chinese but its good. Chicken corn soup b& beef fried rice ehhh.... Reccomended dishes Hot & sour Soup, Chicken Rangoon, Sesame Chicken, Schezuan Chicken, Chicken fried rice.
Khan bbq: Everyone likes them but I have had 2 bad experiences. I have heard a lot about their paratha rolls.
Italian Express has since moved to Devon Ave. Their gyros although greasy r good. Food quality changes form day time to night time as well as weekdays to weekends. Buffalo wings & Chicken or gyros pizza is good well.
halal Browns has closed
Their is a zabihah halal kfc near Devon. Service is what u'll expect from a fast food place. Only chicken is halal though.
Halal Kfc & A&W Lombard again, not everything is halal though.
Hot & Spicy Villa Park: formarly known as Amina's: Desi food is average. Club Sandwich, Chicken Garlic mayo rolls.
ZamZam Devon Ave. : Samosa Chaat
(their is more, will update later)
Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
I second your review. In fact, I feel like going to Devon right now :)
We had a blast in Chicago over the thanksgiving weekend. Its a beautiful city with an awesome downtown. As far as the desi restaurants go, here is my review: 1. Sabri - The nihari was very tasty and the best I've had in any restaurants in America. Their naan was served hot and soft. Their falooda was pretty good too. The ambiance and service was a lot better than I had expected. Actually it was a lot better than many restaurants I've been to here. (Score: 8/10) 2. Usmania - the ambiance was good, but the food was just average...actually it was just OK. I don't think I would go there again. (Score: 6/10) 3. Khan BBQ - This place rocks. The food is awesome and the cooks working there seemed highly trained and very professional. This place is a must if you love BBQ. Try out their tikkas, kabobs, parathas, naans, frontier chicken with rice and everything else they have on their menu if you have space. This might be the best place to eat at Devon. (Score: 9/10) 4. Ghareeb Nawaz - if you are on a tight budget and not too picky on taste then this is the place to go. Their serving size was very generous and the food was pretty decent. The owner was very nice. (Score: 7/10) 5. Hyderabad House - since they were the only place that were open for breakfast on a weekday we went there and had parathas with beef, kabab, chicken and omelate and for desert there was double ka meetha. Their food is very homestyle and pretty good. Their service was good too. (Score: 7/10) 6. Tahoora - Thier halwa poori breakfast on weekend was awesome. Their paratha rolls and samose were good too. (Score: 8/10)
Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
Anyone here tried Pakeeza or Zaiqa in Downtown Chicago? They are on N 1000 block of Orleans St. I remember going there with friends for Anda paratha and chai. The only issue is that they are the restaurants frequented by cab drivers so its not a family mahool. Food was great for the year that I ate there (use to live in downtown chicago around 2001-2002)
Re: chicago desi restaurant reviews and recommendations
^I went once hmm about 8 yrs ago, u r right about cab drivers, but their food was grt and tht time they had parda area for ladies :p

JK Kabab House in Chicago
On Rockwell off of Devon. It's right smack in the center of it all. Across from the main public parking lot. Hours are for Lunch and Dinner only. One of the best grilled delicacies from Pakistan. Chicken corn soup is served complimentary. Excellent bihari and chapli kababs. Also good karrahi dishes. The food is not greasy at all.
:)
