Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

Lets all not pretend now that Pakistan doesn’t have a caste system, it does (not as strong as Indians and nowhere near it). Some don’t believe in it but many many do. I think it only comes up during setting up marriages and such and not in general lives of Pakistanis.
Oh and I don’t think there is anything wrong with OP asking about it, I think he is just curious. I am not going to judge anyone’s attention.
I don’t think there is any ranking though like in India.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

^ to the best of my knowlwdge, the municipality workers who clean the latrines etc in Pakistan are low caste - don’t know if they are Hindus or Christians.

I doubt even if they convert, people from higher caste will line up for rishta.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

Lol @ ranking

From what I hear and know people that still ‘practice’ the caste system do not really care which caste is higher/lower…just that the prospective spouse is the same caste usually because of similar customs/ways

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

Oh let me spell this out before my words get twisted by the self righteous people. There is no ranking, just different castes. No caste has preference over the other.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

OYMWA..when I said “the way the world works”…I wasn’t making excuses. What I meant is that how are we to eradicate or reform issues if we don’t know how society thinks and why it thinks a certain way? Understand the reasons behind a harmful thought process or system so that one can better refute. I hope I made myself more clear. If not, then I don’t know what more I can say.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

um… they do. as they won’t allow people of a lower caste to marry into their family. am I really the only one who knows this?

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

Dear PK,

Since you know so much on this topic, why don’t you tell us whom you refused to give rishta considering his/her lower caste OR who refused to give you rishta based on your caste.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

Yes you’re the only one who believes that.

I never understood the caste system myself when I came to Pakistan. It was too confusing to know. I asked my parents about it and because we were not brought up with that info, they gave me info about what they knew from their parents.

But what I understand is, people check the caste to marry in the same ‘tribe’ or ‘family’ you can say as they belong to. It is just like majority Pakistanis tend to marry Pakistanis, or people from one country/culture/ethnicity/race prefer to marry someone who belongs to the same country/culture//ethnicity/race as their own. That is how the caste system works in pakistan. It is not about ‘ranking’. In my own family, there have been mixed marriages between different castes because we dont believe any caste is better than the other. But there are some people who strictly stick to marrying in their own caste.

But again, as I understand, this is not a ‘rank’ based system like hindu castes. Like brahmin supposed to be the top caste, only to rule and lead and considered learned. All these castes in Pakistan merely is to tell what kind of family the person comes from. Like, what their forefathers did for a living or what their family profession was. Or what part of the subcontinent their forefather originated from. Information like that. I dont think that is ‘ranking’ people and castes. And dont think it is important.

Mr. Fuhrman, Do u mean to say u didn’t shampoo ur hair. And still find my client guilty?

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

What the OP fails to understand is that the people in this thread will not assist her in perpetuating the ignorant idea of caste-based rankings. To even respond here with historical social constructs about how castes were/are ranked, would be an affirmation and also perpetuate such closed-minded ignorance.

That people have taken the high ground and refused to respond speaks well of them and their attempt to distance themselves from ignorant social practices.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

While I hate to see it when people refuse to share knowledge, there are some concepts that really need to be buried in the past…this is one of them.

We are all equal in the eyes of Allah.
Let’s learn to leave it at that.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

I dont understand what is wrong with people wanting to marry in the same family which has the same customs and traditions. For example, we met only one family which wanted to marry strictly in the same caste. I have forgotten what caste they were and that is not important, anyway. We graciously refused because if I recall correctly, they mentioned some of their family traditions with which we would have not been okay. So, I think, that is one valid reason to marry your own caste. Maybe there are more valid reasons about which I dont know as did not meet many such families. It is bad only when people go over board for silly reasons in marrying their castes. I dont think castes in Pakistan have any importance outside of marriage preference/requirements unlike hindu religion which is based on superior, moderate, low, lowest castes. Muslims are amongst the untouchables. So that is completely different and should be eradicated. Similarly, people religiously following caste system out of pride and going overboard with it is wrong too.

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

I think a person choosing to marry within their own caste, clan or whatever is fine and just boils down to personal preference but making or expecting your kids to (which a lot of families who emphasise caste do) is wrong.. Marriage is a serious thing, it frames your life, so saying it’s not as bad because we care about caste ‘just’ for marriage rather than work or whatever doesn’t make it any better imo..

Re: Can you rank the castes from highest to lowest

Back in time social status was determined by the profession of family.
Sonar, Lohar, Darzi, Qasai, Kunjra, Mochi, Chamar, etc
