Re: Can man and women
OP no where said that he is asking about husband n wife sharing one plate. He said Men and Women. Which can be anyone.
Anyways I dont if the OP has opened it for fun but here are my two cents :
Husband & wife can eat from same plate, infact 2 Mehrams can share plates and glasses.. But with NaMehram you cannot share glass or plate. Like if i am with any of my male friends, we cannot drink from same glass. Thats what I had read in a book long back. Since then I am being more strict abt sharing edables with male friends.
Islamically, ethically, morally there is nothing wrong if husband and wife eat from the same plate.
though i like to eat from my own plate without someone sharing but overall there is nothing wrong.
(it could be wrong health wise coz may be the other person hasnot washed their hands)
oh the question is about men/woman NOT husband/wife....well as far as i know yes they can but i am not sure (since someone said u cant from namehram)...in any case i wont eat from someone else's plate.
^ Blessed2006 I really dont have the reference. as i said i had read it in some book long back. I am not sure if there is any reference to it or any hadith particulary allowing or forbiding it. But If we give it a serious thought, Islam clearly forbids too much of interaction with namehrams. Specially for women, she should be in haya and pardah. If the situation is like for example there is very little water for many ppl, and everyone has to take a sip from same bottle or utensil, then in such situation i think it should be allowed. but when there is no such strict situation and all can have their own glasses n plates, then sharing doesnt make sense. One should keep her/his plate separate rather than sharing them with a non-mehram.
Historically, Arabs used to eat from the same platter (many Arab families still do that). So when a family was sitting together, they sat around a big platter and ate from it. That is the reason we have the hadees that when you eat, eat from your side of the plate and eat from the food that is in front of you.
So answer to the OP's question is that its not only permitted, its a sunnat.
One of the sunnahs of eating from a plate is to avoid eating directly from the center because there's no barakah there. Pull the food towards you and eat that is closest to you.
OK totally off topic.
