Buying a Camcorder

I’m looking for a camcorder to get for our family sometime soon (within 1-2 months). I know a lot about digital cameras but I’m not so up-to-date with digital camcorders so if anyone has any advice or suggestions please let me know. I’m not looking for anything fancy shmancy or too expensive. Zoom and video quality are top priorities as well as image stabilization. Oh and I’d rather it not be too bulky but I guess that’s not really a big problem with these new digital camcorders.

I just looked on canon’s site and I didn’t see anything worth the prices. How’s panasonic?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

What's better... A DVD camcorder or a Hard Disk Drive / SD camcorder?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

i would go for DVD one...i've seeen one that has both dvd and a HDD. but that might be a lil pricey. reason i say DVD alone cuz atleast u have the dvd ready when ur done, with HDD u gotta upload/burn, etc...etc.... :)

Re: Buying a Camcorder

I would go for DVD one but frankly, I have never used it. Last time I bought camcorder was like 2 years ago so I’m also looking for more information and will try to keep up with this thread :k:

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Well, the thing with DVD camcorders is that it's burning the DVD while it's recording, and I heard that this has been a problem because it takes up a lot of memory or whatever...

If I get a HDD or SD card camcorder but I don't have a DVD burner on my computer can I still somehow burn the video to a DVD?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Definite DOHHHH!

If you get one with DVD the only way you can take out the DVD and watch videos on a regular DVD player is only after you "finalize" the DVD. Once you finalize the DVD you can't put any more recording on it.

Unlike HD based camcorders you are not restricted to the HD size, you can keep getting more blank DVD's. Ofcourse you can move video from the HD if you have a computer.

Personally, I own an SD card based one (Samsung SC-X210L). Its very compact and does very nice videos. But again you need a DVD burner to put the videos on a DVD. :)

Re: Buying a Camcorder

the hard disc one I think:)

Re: Buying a Camcorder

You would still have to have a DVD Recorder then. In that, you would hook the camcorder upto ur TV and then Record on the DVD Recorder, like ppl day with VCR's off the TV. Dono if u have that but, either way u need something either a burner/DVD Reocoder. Althoughhhh....i think u maybe able to do VCD's with a cd burner if u don't have a Dvd-R on ur pc

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Tofibaba - okay sorry I didn’t know! sheesh..

teggy - so are the problems with the camcorder recording and burning a DVD both at once? I only heard from someone that it causes problems because it uses up a lot of memory and somtimes it skips…but is it really that big of an issue?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Burning and recording are synonymous in this context. There aren't any issues with memory or they wouldn't be selling all those many DVD camcorders.

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Okay so why do people but HDD/SD card camcorders then? And why are the prices relatively the same?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Because they don't wanna keep buying/poppin in DVD? besides ppl that buy (and i'm not speaking for them all) SD/HDD are the type that'll just upload the vid on pc/laptop and keep recording and not have to worry about having media such as Hi-8 or DVD.....
other than that i don't see why one is better than the other. if u want the best of both world...get the one that has HDD and DVD. With this one the advantage is that after u've recorded on the HDD, with a blank DVD in the camcorder u can transfer it right there and then.

Hitachi's innovative D7HS300A DVD Hybrid Camcorder lets you shoot and capture many hours of home movie memories directly to the built-in 8 GB hard drive without changing discs or tapes or running out of space. The critical last step to enjoying and sharing these memories is to transfer those movies from the Hard Drive to DVDs, and the Hitachi Hybrid products are the only camcorders in the world that allow consumers to record to Hard Drive then transfer to DVD right in the camcorder with the push of a button.
Hybrid models offer the flexible capacity of an internal hard drive ideal for vacations when you want to grab a lot of footage but not to carry DVD discs, or for recording long events where you plan to produce highlight reels from the footage. The internal hard drive also makes downloading footage to a computer for editing a snap as well as performing basic in-camera editing when no computer is available. The 1-Touch Easy Dubbing feature lets users quickly burn footage stored on the hard disk drive to DVD for playback on most home DVD players. Built to withstand the rigors of family outings, the Hitachi hybrid camcorders offer a unique drop-proofing system that automatically detect falls, suspends read/write activity and cushions the hard drive for impact.*

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Are the Hybrid ones really expensive?

If I get a SDD/HD card one, is there any place I can send a video in to get it burned to a DVD?

I just looked to get an estimate of how much DVDs are for camcorders and it’s like $6 for just 60 minutes. Robot or human?
they don’t sell them in bigger packs? only singles? =\

Re: Buying a Camcorder

the one i posted above…is about $315 on ebay…regular retail $500 but…im pretty sure u’ll find it within the range of $300-$400 max.

Re: Buying a Camcorder

i’m not so sure…y don’t u just get a dvd burner for ur pc, they’re dirt cheap…?! i can help u install it from right here..it’s that simple loooll…
no seriously. i think u would benefit from that way more if u just have ur own. do u have a desktop?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Yea hmm okay well how much are DVD burners?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

20 bucks

Its about personal preference.

Re: Buying a Camcorder

oh wow really!
hmm well do you have to like install it into your computer?
ummm i don't see any part on the computer for another drive to go =\
well anyways if the hard drive can be put into the desktop then i think i'll just go with a HDD or SD card cam. the only problem is that the space on that is limited. what's the most space (in minutes) these cameras can hold? like 1-2 hours?

Re: Buying a Camcorder

Depending on the size of hard drive you could go to almost 35+ hrs
With SD card based ones, all you need is spare SD cards.

Here’s a Hitachi Hybrid (DVD and HD) for a reasonable price of $399: http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review4442.html

Re: Buying a Camcorder

yea the DVD Drive goes into ur pc....u don't have to 'install' it per se. u can just plug it in when u need to buy a dvd and then unplug it and close the computer up again. a lil ghetto but.....hey...desperate times call for desperate measures
