i so didn't like sharmeen's outfit for the oscars. the sleeve strap things were distracting, and the outfit just wasn't as wow as i was thinking bunto would make it. why didn't she opt for a really elegant gharara? its the oscars! everyone is in gowns everywhere. i loved the colours though.
It wasn't just distracting, it was accentuating the chunky upper arms! Any proper designer would advice you; Don't attract attention to your unflattering parts of the body! Fashion should not be followed so blindly, even if sleeveless is in fashion, don't wear it if it won't suit you, simple!
Personally, I think she was trying to make a statement that women in Pakistan do not roam around in abayas and CAN show skin. With the recent OBL thing and all the horrible PR we're getting, a sleeveless suit made a statement.
Ziggy and SGC - when I read that Bunto was doing the outfit I immediately pictured the Blue Coat that Bunto made for Ziggy's SiL. Wouldn't that have looked DIVINE!!!!! So sad :-(

I agree.
That and I think the fashion industry in Pakistan is still figuring out how to do formal without doing bridal. She probably didn't want it to be laden with heavy kaam like a typical bride.
I would've gone with one of those long gown with churidaar things that are in fashion these days, in something soft and flowy and chiffon. But I don't think it's bad.
When I read, Sharmeen was wearing bunto, I was looking forward to some embroidery/style like in the dress above. I was a little disappointed, it was a nice dress but I expected more from Bunto.

My issue as I said was the embroidery style, to me the embroidery look a little scattered.
I agree that her dress could've been so much better but I'm glad she didn't turn up in a fancy gharara looking like chamkeeli bride. Yes its the Oscars but it doesn't mean everyone has to dress up like a Christmas tree. She's not an A-list movie star, she was there as a foreign filmmaker with a documentary representing a devastatingly serious issue, so she was appropriately dressed and and her dress was in perfect solidarity with all the women she thanked and the issues she spoke about in her acceptance speach.
Having said that, I do think her dress on stage looked much better than it does in pictures. I'm sure it even looked better in person, I guess the red carpet philosphy of 'dressing for the camera' didn't cross Bunto's mind.
bunto excels at creating looks for the understated, sophisticated bride. i don't think bunto would ever make something you could call "a christmas tree". did you see what jessica chastain was wearing? that had more kaam, and nicer kaam, imho, than on sharmeen's outfit. the thing is, you can wear a gharara without being a "chamkeeli dulhan". traditional ghararas, by definition, graceful and elegant. yes, her movie was a documentary on a very grim topic but that shouldn't mean she can't wear something flattering. all i'm saying is this outfit was not flattering on her , no matter how pretty the embroidery might have been, and was underwhelming as far as bunto's usual work goes.

For a Bunto it was underwhelming but for Oscars and the movie she was representing, it was very appropriate. I don't know much about Sharmeen but from whatever I've seen of her, the dress she wore at the Oscars was *very her, *she obviously looked very comfortable and carried herself with sweet confidence, that must've been the whole point. Gharara or even Bunto's typical work, by desi standard could be termed as elegant or graceful but I still think it would've looked like a fancy costume on the red carpet. As with Jessica Chastain, you can expect a foreign, first time, serious documentary film maker to compete with a movie star. I mean have you see the volume of Penelope's dress? Should Sharmeen have also went with something as dramatic as that? Oscars are very prestigious but as far as the whole glitz and glamour is concerned, its never been about people behind the lens, and hats off to Sharmeen's team for not going that route
Everyone is free to have a different opinion, but from what I see, Sharmeen was there to accept the recognition for her film not to 'celebrate' her movie or make a fashion statment like Chastain & Co.

LOL...lets not get carried away now.
I think she generally dresses like that and she was just being herself, not making a silly 'statement'. If anything that made a statement was her work and acceptance speech.

I just saw it as a missed opportunity, but I'm guessing Bunto has really taken the clients requirements here to heart and created something Sharmeen would be confident in.
^ I agree and if you notice that that Sana Safinaz outfit as well as Sania's design for the Oscar luncheon are both very similar in cut to Bunto's. The colors are muted in all three outfits. I do think that Sharmeen had a strong say in what she would be comfortable wearing. And if that is the case, then all three designers did justice.
^ its got the glam factor that the other outfit lacked, imo. the draping in particular makes it look a lot more worthy of an occasion like the Oscars without being OTT.
I think today is the day to be in opposition. lol. I find the colour of the second dress very dull (almost ugly), though the kaam is nice but the fitting is ill (I know its very typical of SS) but the dress could've been bit more structured. The first dress didn't have the kaam but the colour complimented her complexion so beautifully, its such a shame that it didn't photograph well but to me, she looked stunning and so elegant on the stage with her first dress. It seriously looked so much better in motion.
Anyway, I feel the first dress for me just maintains that Bunto Kazmi is very much a one trick pony. She had an epic opportunity to take a break from her usual bridal kaam (that she'd repeated on 100000 bridal joras) to create a unique, refershing look for an historic monent. Though I still wouldn't mind wearing her jora on my wedding. :p
