It's also a status thing and people feel obligated to spend this much because that's what other's have done in their social circle. Girls who say' I went to a wedding last month and the bride wore Bunto' may feel that need to have a 'Bunto' outfit as well. And especially if you do have the money for it OR can some how sacrifice on other things and use the money on the jora. You have to understand, in Pakistan most girls don't pay for their outfits, their parents do. So the parents must also feel some need to live up to people's expectations by buying a designer outfit for their daughter.
For people who can really afford it, it's probably no big deal. But for people who cannot but some how have to make do of it, I feel sorry for them. Sometimes I'm thankful that the social circle I grew up in doesn't focus on the designer names. It saves us a a lot of hassle!
Yes, I myself live n Pakistan, but I feel the educated need to make amends and set examples for others. I would never, EVER spend this much money on a dress. But i understand thats a personal choice, and many brides feel otherwise. I'm not preaching guys, I'm just saying the educated need to think and set examples!edited out part that has apparently offended people WE must all make "sacrifices" to improve the plight of the poor girls in our country. Ok I will say no more since the mods might block me but I just had to say something. :)
Aaaaaanyways, back to Bunto Kazmi. I still think she's a freakin couture monster & how I must have my baraat outfit made by her. 4 more years to go. >.<
extravagance is shown in all sorts of ways- whether its spending that much for any designer dress and showing it on a wedding or gloating over how much one has donated and announcing it publicly
anyway, i often think about which designer my future sil will want or my sister will want for her wedding. it is an exciting experience.
agreeing with sarashahid :)
people need to have a realitycheck on whats important :P
and dont mind me saying but i think Bunto is a total ripp off, as from what i read of pareezays exp..
sumorani, i wasn't gloating. I was just saying that so that no on would think i was being bitter because I couldn't afford a Bunto, and take the whole argument to that side. But i think someone else is being bitter.....
Also, maybe its traditional to have HSY for Lahore and Bunto for Karachi? their prices compare, do they not?
agreeing with sarashahid :)

awww, no pareezy shouldn't think that at all! why ruin her experience! I have said time and time again that I promise these comments aren't personal! for pareezy: pls share your joy with us and post pictures:)
Thats not harsh, not trying to insult anyone especially not pareez!im happy she had a dream wedding of which we all dream off :) so sorry pareez if i made u feel bad after readin this.
Bunto is talented yes,i still think she is overappreciated and highly priced..
you know what i've noticed - all the major designers are charging the same price range for their medium to heavy wear. from my own experience of bridal dress shopping, we just got married in May, i found that most of the big designers were comprable. from what i ended up getting - i could have gotten a heavy bunto, dr. haroon, sana safinaz, nomi ansari, faiza samee or hsy, but i chose nilofer shahid for both my wedding and valima. i think its just now a matter of preference. if your budget is not in the 3-8 lakh range, then there is still another tier of designers who are just as good, can offer you the higher end materials, and intricate kaam, but you may have to guide them a bit more, stay on top of your order and compromise on some things, but you won't have to deal with the hefty price tag. i think bunto gets criticized a lot more, because most people know what she charges and get offended, but really the rest of the designers charge the same and won't negotiate either. your best bet is going with the designer/individual that can give you what you want and listens to you. sometimes you need to pay for customer service and since that is limited in pakistan , if you're abroad, you may more for the servicing than really the outfit. thats my two cents

I totally agree. she's overrated, imo. Ive seen some unknown women do similar job with wedding clothes, and cost less than half. But then you have to look for them, and really work to find such women....
^ but thats the trade off, isn't it? my cousin has a 65000 RS dress and it looks gorgeous, its a sana safinaz copy, and predictably, the karigar and darzi drove her half mad in the process of getting it made. her weddings in a week and a half and the darzi is still working on it. now she could have gone to sana safinaz themselves and gotten the original with minimal fuss, but also would have paid many times over what a dress from kehkashan costs.
its all about the trade-off-- some people don't want the run around, they just want to go somewhere, get something they know will look good and exactly how they've envisioned, and don't mind paying top dollar for it. and if you live abroad, that seems to make the most sense. others feel like they can do a much better job on their own or by going elsewhere and for them the price tag is more important.
there is no right or wrong here- it is what it is according to what you want and what your priorities are. and i have to say, we are mA a very affluent crowd on GS- i know one person offline- she's a passing acquaintance, no more- who had a bunto for wedding and dr. haroon for valima. here on GS, it seems like every other girl is getting a designer dress and more power to y'all! at the end of the day, your dress or the money you give to charity aren't what make a marriage- i just hope everyone remembers that! :p

afashionista: **i completely agree with your post.
I totally agree w/ you, Sara^^
In Lahore, people spend more money on jewelery, I'm from Lahore so i'd know. I think in KHI the tradition of heirloom jewelery and whatnot is what makes Bunto so popular over there. I've yet to see a Lahori Bunto bride. Lahori brides opt for Karma and other contemporary designers. I often think it's the "Paindu complex" because Lahori/Punjabis are often worried about looking traditional and hence "paindu". =/
I've seen a couple brides in Lahore who opted for Bunto outfits.
janab - i have heard of that too. i have many cousins in lahore who would not wear bunto and its because of that uber traditional look, which is really lovely. in general, lahoris seem to sway towards Karma, Nilofer Shahid and HSY has a big presence as does Mohd Mehdi. in Karachi's case, Bunto, Dr. Haroon and Faiza Samee run the show but this doesn't mean that there aren't tons of lahori brides who travel to KHI and get sana saf, bunto dresses made etc.
I think the best part is when someone wows you with something unexpected. Kinda stinks when you go to these glamorous weddings and can predict the bridal results - granted they are outstanding, but it was more of a "to be expected," look that we've all seen done here over and over again.
