Currently my daughters have a double bed in their room. They had a king size bed but then there was no room fo other things. Now, as they are getting older and we need a desk for my older one, we were thinking of getting them a bunk bed.
The room isn’t too big so we have to be creative. It’s just a plain rectangular room with a built in closet and door on one wall and a large window on the opposite wall.
Anyone seen any functional designs for bunk beds, and most importantly, is it a good idea?
Definatly a good idea ... i dunt know about US but in UK some bedrooms in some new houses these days are really small ..so having a bunk bed saves alot of space ..
and just like in my house we got a bunk bed for my two sisters and its a really safe too especially the second levell
well the one we got is just normal single bunk bed with ladder going up ..and in metalic .. hard to shift around..
we always wanted bunkbeds growing up by were so sharari that my folks always said no. the first bunk I had was when i moved into teh frtaernity house in college and my roomie and i decided that buncks will give us more floor space
you have a couple of options, the regular bunk bed, two twin beds on above the other, from a space perspctive probably the most efficient.
They also have bunk beds where the bottom bunk is a fullsize and the top one is a twin, which actually comes in ver hands if you have guests, the full size is comfy enough for a couple to sleep a few days but not more than that :D so u will be able to give short term guests a comfy bed, but obviously they wont become long term.
last option is where the bottom bunk and top bunk are perpendicular to each other and the bottom bunk has a desk right next to it, the bottom bunk can be twin or full, This could be just what you are looking for.
OK, I like the last option where I could have a desk as well.
I’ve only slept at the bottom bed in a bunk bed in college for a whole year and it was OK, but how does it feel at the top? The ceilings aren’t that high (just regular home height), so would someone get claustrophobic up there? I believe you do get the lesser heights one as well.
Bunk beds are almost a necessity for growing kids. We were 6 children growing up in a 2 bed apartment in Gandhi Garden area in karachi, so naturally we were big on bunks. My eldest brother's two kids had bunks and now my 2nd eldest brother's two sons also have a bunk bed.
Usually what ends up happening is the slightly older kid climbs up to the top bunk, hence showing his/her abilities to the younger sib while at the same time finding an own private spot. The younger sib usually cannot climb up to the higher bunk so they stay to their bed. This effectively eliminates a lot of territorial disputes (and im being very serious here :D ).
My two nephews in question are 7 and 5. They've been bunk'n it for a good 3+ years now. The older one sleeps on top, and the yonger one is a spoilt brat who needs his mommy to literally fall asleep with him, so bhabhi prefers it too that the younger one is on the lower bunk.
Apart from that it makes for great playtime. When theres other kids over the children can get to be the monkeys they are climbing up and down. Then often all children gather on the top bunk and it instantly becomes the next best thing to a clubhouse on top of a tree where they engage in activities such as snatch the other kids' toys or beat em up with confidence that they wont be caught since theyre so high up.
X2, I love the 1st one. It's so complete. The trundles are nice...but perhaps when we move to our own bigger place...and the girls have their separate rooms.
So I guess I am leaning towards this more and more. Thanks Cheegs.
Otherwise, I think bunk beds are a great idea esp’ for small rooms. I like the ‘triple bunk beds’ which have a single bed on top and double bed on the bottom.
Check out bunk beds at www.argos.co.uk for lots of ideas. There are so many different designs e.g. pine, white wood etc.
i would go with the pic that mano posted... we had a bunk bed growing up more cuz it was so cool and we fought with our folks to get it for us, even though we were only 3 kids ... and then we all fought about who would get to sleep on the top bunk... but that wore off in about a week's time... none of us wanted to sleep on top.. my younger bro and i would feel claustrophobic up there with the ceiling in our face... shudder. we hated it.
so finally my folks had to take down the top bunk and use it as a proper bed seperately... there was a pull out bed under the bottom bed though so that was cool and a space saver...
tahts the only thing i would worry bout ... if the girls were to feel claustrophobic up there.

My nephews have the first one and it looks soooo cute!!! The only thing is that the room should have high ceilings or it will look a bit crowded.
Yeah, I would definitely need to do some measurements before I buy something. The pull out bed looks cool, but I don’t think any of my kids will sleep on that… I don’t know why…it’s looks more like an emergency arrangement rather than a permanent comfortable sleeping place .

Nikki sis bunks are very useful and comfortable as a poster said about territory or like seperate room.
I used it when we all brothers and sisters were living togater. All kids and me used bunk bed both woody and Irony one. are very good to use. I'm not sure where you live in UK or USA but assuming that you live in USA.
I saw all very good bunk bed in UK with a table under bunk bed there are different style and Type.. Great to use.
As you asked question about when your daughters will get her own room The wooden one can be seperated and become two seperate bed.. As a bunk bed they are safe to use.
You can ask at the time of buying that if you can make them 2 seprate beds.
You can also buy futon bunk bed. In which you can make sofa out of double bed and bed and its easy to do by single person if you know the technique to make sofa and bed.
You can later put sofa and bed to one girl and buy bed for another or bed to each girl. Easy to assamble.
You can also mount a couples of shelf close to upper bed if older daughter is going up to keep her things there and easy to use. also stick a push to on off battery operated bulb in case if in the night they want to go to washroom or restroom to avaoid any thing to happen due to darkness.
Iggly friendy you gave argos link I was thinking to give that link I found there 2 single beds with table under bunk was very good. I didn't buy that as I didn't need that. I loved that one.
