Strong quake hits Pakistan, at least 80 killed

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — A strong earthquake struck parts of southwestern Pakistan early Wednesday, killing at least 31 people, officials said.

The quake struck just after 4 a.m. in Balochistan, an impoverished province bordering Afghanistan. It had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Balochistan police chief Asif Nawaz Khos said at least 31 people had been killed, while a local mayor said many houses were damaged.

The quake was centered about 400 miles southwest of the capital, Islamabad.

Pakistan is prone to violent seismic upheavals. In October 2005, a magnitude-7.6 quake devastated Kashmir and northern Pakistan, killing about 80,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.

Balochistan is home to a long-running separatist movement, but is not considered a major battle ground in the fight against Taliban insurgents that plague other border regions.

Re: Breaking News: Deadly quake hits Pakistan at least 80 killed

I think Quetta is largely safe but there are destructions in other smaller towns.

Pakistan Quake Kills at Least 150

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted parts of southwestern Baluchistan Province early Wednesday, causing widespread destruction, officials said. At least 150 people were killed and hundreds were injured, according to initial reports.

The earthquake struck Quetta, the provincial capital, and several districts of the province between 4:30 a.m. and 5:10 a.m., the state-run news agency reported.

“It was a shallow earthquake, which is very destructive. The aftershocks will be felt for a week with more or less the same intensity,” Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, the director general of Pakistan Meteorological Department, said.

Mr. Chaudhry said the area was prone to earthquakes. The epicenter of Wednesday’s quake was 70 miles north of Quetta. Army troops and medics were moved by helicopter from Quetta to two villages, Warchoom and Kawas, in Ziarat district, one of the hardest hit areas, a military spokesperson said.

Rescue teams scrambled to help residents and hospitals were placed on emergency alert.

The districts of Kuchlak, Pishin, Chaman, Mastung and Loralai were also affected and panic-stricken residents of Quetta spilled into the streets.

“It was scary,” Malik Siraj Akbar, a resident of Quetta and a journalist for the Daily Times, an English-language daily, said by telephone. “The walls of the apartment complex where I live shook so hard that I just closed my eyes and waited for the roof to collapse. I feel so lucky to be alive.”

After the initial shocks, people ran out and spent two hours in the open. “Most were reluctant to go back inside the apartment complex,” Mr. Akbar said.

Junaid Tariq, an administrator at the Women’s University in Quetta, said houses in the worst affected villages were frequently built of mud and logs and collapse easily. He said there was no electricity in Quetta.

Local television showed footage of residents sitting in the open, shivering in the cold. Women huddled in groups with their panicked children.

People were filmed searching through the rubble for survivors and belongings.

Baluchistan is one of four provinces in Pakistan. A low-intensity insurgency by Baluch nationalists demanding greater autonomy and a bigger share of the national wealth has long simmered in the region..

Pakistan lies in an area of high seismic activity..

On Oct. 8, 2005, an earthquake registering 7.8 on the Richter scale killed more than 75,000 people in northern Pakistan and the part of the disputed Kashmir region that it administers, and an estimated 3.5 million people were left homeless. In 1935, Quetta was destroyed by an earthquake that killed 30,000 people..

May Allah bless the souls of those who perished, and may Allah provide sustenance to the survivors. Ameen!

In our locality we have already started collecting funds for them. I encourage all of you to do the same at your own level.

Soon their will be bank accounts established by the government. If not, then donate money to Edhi and tell them to use the funds for Balochistan. They are very honest and they will make sure the funds are well spent.
Edhi Foundation

Another option for donation is Shaukat Khanum. I haven’t see one yet, but they may set up an account for Balochistan as well.

Re: Breaking News: Deadly quake hits Pakistan at least 80 killed

May Allah swt help the victims. I hope the loss of lives and properties is less than fraction of 2005 earth quake.

Side note: Why earth quakes hit Pakistan in October (atleast last 2 did)? Is it related to weather change?

Re: Breaking News: Deadly quake hits Pakistan at least 80 killed

Quetta has already seen one deadly quake in the past, back in 1935 which was reported to be a 7.7 scale quake (initially thought to be 8.1). 30-60K people died back then. The city was rebuilt after that. The following is a before and after shot of Bruce Street in Quetta.

Sad indeed. We mourned the loss of so many people in China. And now we are mourning the loss of people in Pakistan.

PS: I should send some money.

Earthquake in Quetta

folks, who have relatives or family and friends in Quetta and earth quake hit areas around the city, may they find the patience an acceptance to take on the loss and be resilient.

any thoughts around natural calamity and how people who got impacted by this earthquake, we at GS could, help out?

Monetary needs come to find, first and foremost.

other than that, maybe a culture of holding, securing, healing, nurturing and protecting minds an hearts from falling apart, lives from shutting down, as the crisis takes its shape and subsides physically, but its marks remain?

Re: Breaking News: Deadly quake hits Pakistan at least 80 killed

May the deceased rest in peace.

The toll has risen upto 170, and search is on for survivors.

I pray for the families and loves ones of the affected. May Allah give them strength.
