Can we please focus on our weaknesses without every time bringing in the comfort factor of "oh but this also happens in India" . I don't give a damn if India is the worst country when it comes to human Rights violation, but considering being the second worst as some kind of badge of honor is a reflection of a very poor mentality.
Re: Blasphemy - Christian couple killed and burnt
No one brought India into it till somebody said that merging with India is the solution.
It was just Reha's anger and frustration talking. We all are angry and frustrated at this trend of mob's justice, and such feelings get reflected in different ways by different people. The original topic in discussion is way more serious and real than Reha's rhetorical suggestion.

I never said that was the solution - reread my post.
I specifically said and meant that inevitably there will be a point when the world over will think "agar ye sab kuch karna tha to alag hi kyun huwe thay?" and I'll be honest...I am not the first person to ever dare utter these words. This is old news.

Well said TLK...
Re: Blasphemy - Christian couple killed and burnt
We are all frustrated but lets be careful how to express that frustration...and be constructive. This india vs pak rhetoric hardly adds any value.
One last comment in general .... in the end lets not forget this is a Pakistani forum so please use your judgment in expressing your opinion. We welcome everyone on this forum (and I really mean it) but will not allow comments that are openly hostile and derogatory towards Pakistan. PERIOD!
Now lets move on.
Re: Blasphemy - Christian couple killed and burnt
Okay, so the law does not allow public to kill anyone accused of blasphemy, good, so one point cleared.
That example is different from what we are discussing here... here a mob killed a couple.
You are talking about religious-insecurity as well as sectarian issue, its not just the minority but as you have already seen the 'police axed .....' thread where one sect can kill another for same reason.
Religious extremism was also not as 'intense' as it was before, so it has more to do with intensity of extremism/hatred than this law when its clear that the law does not allow anyone to kill anyone.

Re: Blasphemy - Christian couple killed and burnt
Setting a precedent: State becomes plaintiff in slain couple
He said the prime minister asked him to not only pursue the case, but also make sure that it set a precedent so that no one would dare repeat such a barbaric act again.
“Punjab Minister for Human Rights Khalil Tahir Sindhu said the owners of the brick kiln, Yousuf Gujjar and his son-in-law, had been arrested. Police investigations have found them guilty of egging on a prayer leader to declare Shama and Sajjad guilty of blasphemy from the loud speaker of a mosque.Sindhu said the incident in Kot Radha Kishan was sheer brutality. He said the brick kiln owners had a monetary dispute with the couple.”

^
-does that mean no dee'at will be paid?
-does that mean the state will NOT compromise?
-does that mean the perpetrator of the crime will be hanged?
-does that mean the change of government will have no bearing on the case?
-does that mean the witnesses will NOT be harrased? does Kamran Michael's appointment mean that the government will NOT be blamed for the negative outcome of the trial?
given the history outcome of high profile court cases, i don't think a positive outcome will be in order to any of the above questions.
Re: Blasphemy - Christian couple killed and burnt
^ I dont know. A small step, hopefully it will result in better results.

Re: Blasphemy - Christian couple killed and burnt
The law is THE result of extremism that existed when it was created... you can consider it chicken-egg scenario, but to me the law came into being because there was extremism in the society. The extremism in the society is what we need to take care of first before we can do anything about the law. You can eliminate the law for all I care but the mob-kill-alleged-blasphemer cases will not disappear.
Well then the law made it worse... It certainly didnt help the situation. They took a bad situation and added even more fuel too it. You dont tackle extremism by enabling it. One of the reasons there is so much extremism is because the govt never does anything about it. Whenever the conservative right wing barks, the govt cowers and gives in to all their demands. Instead of punishing Mullahs who preach hatred and instigate violence, they make laws like the "blasphemy" law which only emboldens them further. And then when people get hurt, everyone forgets that laws like the blasphemy law were made in order to avoid such situations. Enko sar peh sawar rukha hai and this is what you get.
There was some hope that after the 1953 Anti Ahmadi riots the people who instigated the violence would be punished (thats the only time I have ever heard they arrested the offending mullah). But then everything went to sh1t when instead of fighting extremists, they decided to cave into them and declare Ahmadis non muslim. That really made it all better didnt it!
Bottom line, stop enabling extremists with such laws. Create an environment where such extremism is not tolerated. Start by undoing idiotic laws like this one (and continue with deposing of all discriminatory laws, including those against Ahmadis).
