Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
Is being at event horizon same as being insidethe black hole? What is event horizon What does watching from a distance mean? Distance here is of order of metrer kilometers etc?
Event Horizon is the theoretical boundary of black hole. Once you hit that boundary, there is no escaping. Technically, there is no such thing as "inside" of blackhole. You are either on this side of Event Horizon or on that side.
Watching from distance means in terms of Kilometers. Things (curvature of space-time because of gravitational force) change so rapidly as you approach black hole that you dont need to be too far away from the hole (just far enough not to get caught in its trap) to observe the time standing still. That means that if you are watching someone falling into blackhole, and once that person hits the event horizon, you will see him hanging there till eternity. He is frozen in time from your perspective.

glad that queer’s place of abode made you understand the concept of black holes, CDG:smack:

Thanks TLK. Scary stuff. So what is actually happening. Suppose I am 20 km away from a black hole. At t =0 I see person a going in. So that person frozen from my perspective. But that person at event horizon. So for him time keeps moving. And he gets sucked in.what then. Does he cease to exis10 min later person b at event horizon.do I see person b also frozen. Or as time has Ettie still I only see person A?

For the person going in, time appears normal, but since the gravity is much higher, time is actually slower. Say you had a watch that went beep for every second that passed for the person going into the event horizon (EH). As the person going in approaches the event horizon EH, the beeps would be farther apart, meaning time is slowing down for them. After they cross the horizon, they would get crushed, but we don't know for sure what happens, and the watch would stop beeping (infinite amount of time between beeps).
Their image is frozen in place because right at the horizon, light can't escape the black hole, it's "stuck" in place at the horizon, and any light bouncing off you after you cross the EH, light that shows you going into the hole, is actually getting sucked in with you, so no image past the EH is visible. That's why it's called the EH. It's just the range beyond which light can't escape.
TLK can correct me if I'm wrong.
Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
When you say time is slowing for them as they approach EH is that why they are frozon for person 20 km away? That is each se. Tick is actually several yrs for person 30 km away. But person approaching EH for them time keeps moving right. One sec is just one sec for them.
What does gravity have to do with time. And why do I feelbso stupid?!#
Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
I still don’t get anything else in the thread. ![]()
Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
Well yes, you can think of the image being frozen there as time being slowed down to infinity, or as a sphere around the black hole, the EH, on which light is “still”. The gravitational pull of the black hole balanced by the speed of the light escaping. I could be wrong on this and others can correct me.
The ticks get further apart because spacetime is getting distorted. Spacetime is a made up plane which helps to simplify the theory of relativity, at least mathematically (lol). The picture below shows spacetime being disturbed by the Earth.
As you can see, the Earth distorts spacetime, and the curvature can be thought of as the cause of gravity, i.e. the gravity we notice is actually a bending of spacetime. Time is also distorted, but since the earth’s gravity is very small, we don’t notice it. There are actually experiments which show a very tiny fraction of a second difference between a clock that’s been orbiting the Earth, and a clock on the ground. A black hole on the other hand, would cause an extreme distortion, a very rapid funnel to the center, and thus, a greater distortion of time. Basically, gravity messes up time.
Lol these topics are just weird. My theory is that to “get it” you just need to find an analogy that works for you.

Don't worry, neither do I.
Says the guy who made super long posts. Don't have to mock me. :(
Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
you and me both ![]()
Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
Lol I wasn’t mocking you. Ok I was only 10% mocking you, and I just wanted to use that meme. You’re assuming my posts are correct. :halo:. You know what they say, spew enough BS with conviction, and people will believe you.
It’s not hard to understand, it’s just hard to figure out which things are just weird facts, and which things are explained by the weird facts.

SEEE, I knew you were! ![]()
Okay to be totally honest I have never studied any of this but I did read the first page and did comprehend it. I was just exaggerating but I still only like queerios post.
Didn’t read your super long posts yet.
Aaliyah, lets pretend we do.
(wait did I just contradict myself? whoops lol)

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
Wow!! You should be a Univ Prof. Such a nice explanation.
Did not ever think of earth gravity being negligible wrt black hole.and minute diff of clock in wary vs on orbit around earth. You are one smart Ghost.

Fake Oscar’s speech This is so unexpected…
Thank you Southie uncle! I’m sure lots of other people, including TLK and Queer, could have explained it. I just happen to be online, on a Friday night. ![]()

Great posts ghost :k:

OMG AALIYAH ANOTHER PHOTO OF SRK? ![]()
my mind just imploded
Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time
Implosion- getting sucked into black hole. I see Cough Cough frozen at EH.
