Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Well, going by the Einstein’s theory of general relativity suggests that time slows down for an object when it gets closer to a black hole and therefore virtually stands still inside it.

Hypothetically speaking, black hole gives a whole new concept to time travel. But that’s that. A theory!

One wonders if creating of a black hole is possible in a human lab at all?

If it is, it feel highly imposible to use it for time travel, otherwise, we would have people from the future visiting us every now and then. But then, what if they have also invented some technology to hide themselves similar to the theory of Einstein about aborbing light and become invisible. Scary, I tell you.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Ahhh my all time favorite topic. I can write pages after pages on this.

Couple of clarification for other who would be reading your post.

Time stands still around black hole, for the observer who is watching it from a distance. From the perspective of person who is at event horizon or inside black hole. it flows normally.

Time Travel through black hole is only one way and to the future only. You cannot use black hole to go back in past.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Yep Yep. That’s true. I should have been a little more explicit in the excitement

Going by the above that time stands still for person outside of black hole but flows normally for the one inside, that’s the only way forward. What was I thinking when I was asking for people from future to visit us? :smack:

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Worm holes can make people travel in past. Not nessecarily the place and time of their choice but it could happen.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Ooo. This is new to me. I feel like a caveman :(

so I am very excited at the possibility of having a lab created object that can be interchanged between a black hole and wormhole. :D

Wonder what effect will it have if a black hole is changed to wormhole or vice versa during the course when a person is travelling time in either direction?

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Hmm wouldn't it be impossible to create a black hole in a lab? Due to the intense gravity?

I mean if you could create a black hole in a lab, it would eventually just eat up the Earth.

Unless you could put some measures into place that would control the gravitational field, but that sounds like something out of a sci fi movie.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

You can theoretically create miniscule black holes inside particle accelerators. When you smash two particles at ultra high speed, they could merge into each other creating conditions that can only be found inside/around black holes.

These black holes however will be such short lived that they won’t be able to create any hazard to its surrounding before vanishing back into thin air.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Yeah I've read about that! Pretty awesome!

But as far as something tangible and sustainable...hmmm

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Nah, that cant happen. You just cannot create energies as harsh as nature can.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

So how far has anyone gone with this theory? Is this what the Jet Propulsion Lab does?

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

No JPL is NASA's lab. They are into space exploration.

Large Hadron Collider and CERN are particle accelerators, both in Europe. I think CERN will be conducting such experiment after its operative in couple of years

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

If anyone’s interested, heres a documentary I watched in my highschool years about time travel.

Not the most content heavy doco, but still a fun watch.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

^ Yeah CERN is the one that’s researching this topic. I was in Geneva a few months ago but the tours were closed because of maintenance after their recent experiments. :frowning:

It was only fairly recently that worm holes were accepted as a reality, at least theoretically, by physicists. We still haven’t observed one, or rather, we’ve never received data that suggest that what we’re seeing is probably a worm hole. Gotta love uncertainty. :halo:

If I ever get pulled over, and the cop asks me if I knew how fast I was going, I wanna say “no, but I can tell you exactly where I am”.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

^ LOL! Legend!

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

how about a black holes 101?

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

:biggthumb:

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Now I've stopped working and am looking up Horizon docos. Gotta love Horizon!

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

this post made on Sep 31, 2013. From the event horizon of the blackhole i created in my er.. lab. will flush twice soon.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

 This whole thread went over my head except this part.

Re: Black Holes and The Concept of Time

Is being at event horizon same as being insidethe black hole?
What is event horizon
What does watching from a distance mean? Distance here is of order of metrer kilometers etc?
