There we go again. The religious crowd wanting to bring their religion into law. That is why some in the west are truly concerned about attempts to import Sharia law.

Next wouod be to ban showing hair. Then face.

who says bring in the shari'a laws? did i? the west knows full well about the evils of alcohol. how many women are beaten by the intoxicated men, how many accidents happen due to alcohol consumption, how many murders take place because the killer was drunk?

aren't they social evils? shouldn't they be stopped by bringing in legislations banning alcohol consumption even in the privacy of the drinker.

@Southie This is not necessarily related to religion. See statistics. Some govt are already imposed/imposing ban on drinking like Gujrat & Kerala. Though in kerala top hotels are permitted due to tourism reason but I favor total ban.

Of course not every instance if alcohol an is religiously motivated. There used to be ban in Tamil Nadu several decades ago. My undergrad colleagues woukd buy alcohol as soon as train entered Andhra. Banning is not a solution.

When a person whose religion bans alcohol calls for an alcohol in the west, one can reasonably conclude that at least partially this is religiously motivated. This person so easily wants to ban alcohol - a drink that millions consume without "raping" anyone

I wonder how such a person would feel when the Trump call for a ban on muslims. It is so easy to impose ones way of life on others.

She was lucky thats not somewhere in south and the driver wasnt a redneck who keep a couple of shotguns in the car. And that would hv been a selfdefense shot as well

Banning is a solution. We can't claim 100% but we strive to achieve better. Eg. National health survey report-4 shows that after govt made strick laws on tobacco products, smoking, ciggarette, bidi, khaini consumption have fallen down and hence deaths due to consuption of these products. Crime/accidents incidents might have fallen due to ban, that is why govts are imposing bans.

There is a sound reasoning. Govts care for health of public, therefore drugs like cocain, heroin, ganja, charas are banned. This certainly saves generation from fall. Govts don't give absolute freedom eg. we don't have right to suicide (end our own life or choice to death). Trump demands cannot be justified on many grounds. Trump's call for ban motivates racism and the whole idea is stupid.

Education is better than banning. Banning creates an underworld. The bootlegging industry in India sells third rate liquor with all kinds if ingredients. You make something ikkegal. A whole illegal industry sprouts. Once u criminalize some thing there is money to be made.

There r laws in place in the west in terms of drunk driving and creating nuisance while drunk enforce those laws. And stop treating citizens like children.

Just as reasonable people find Trumps idea on banning muslims stupid, many would find banning alcohol or even drugs stupid.

Data speaks louder than words. You can find enough reports to know that strict laws and bans have reduced crimes and deaths drastically. I agree education helps in inculcating ability to reason, to know what is good & bad for us and society at large. But sadly in this case, educated/learned people are on the same page. Strict laws are neede along with moral persuation techniques. Govt. here is not treating us as kids. They have right to make laws that ensure law & order, public health, social wellbeing.

Anjul... There are lies, bigger lies and statistics. Data can always be manipulated to suit the person quoting it. Banning liquor is not an option. Many countries have tried it and failed. Education can help, but enjoying a liquor in the privacy of one's home should not matter. Personally I love my peg ... I do not want government telling me what to do..

In the Netherlands, legalizing drugs has REDUCED DEATHS AND DISEASES. Legal prostitution is good for both the lady and the customer. Legalized abortion saves lives - by keeping mothers from back alley clinics.

and i favor total ban of hindi speakers into kerala. they bring their cow cola rape culture and destroy everything.

alcohol, beef and toddy tapping is part of native culture of kerala, if you want to ban stuff, ban your child labor, infanticide, rape, pardah, caste etc. first, earn some civilization levels, and then come to the table.
