Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
Martha's Courtyard Bakery had yummy cheesecake, I also tried Afghani food at Balkh in Astoria.. I'm glad I didn't go to Tangra Masala... but a few friends were raving about Kathi Rolls' kabab rolls.

Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
I LOVE Martha's Country Bakery. Infact my husband said this morning lets go there. There is one in Forest Hills which is closer than Astoria. Their cakes are to die for. I want to try Kati Roll so so so bad. I can try the veg. stuff but I want to also try meat rolls which I can't :(
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
Thanks Spiral, but boy, that’s wayy too expensive for a couple of ppl. I’m not going to take my entire family over there which i was thinking about earlier. :nono:
Gina, when you say you are glad you didnt go to tangra, does that mean you dont like it??

Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
We were supposed to go, but since I read a few reviews in this thread that the food is really spicy, I’m glad I didn’t go! I don’t like spicy food ![]()
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
Thanks Spiral for your review.. $120 for two is a lot!!!!it will have to wait for a special day!! for now I will just make the halal steak at home :D
we were at kati roll (49 West 39th Street) couple of weeks ago and asked about it being halal.. they said yes it was halal!!! Please don't tell me it's not!!!
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
The one in village.. bleecker area isn’t halal. Its called Kati Roll Company… http://thekatirollcompany.com/index.html This is their website. I think you went to their other branch which I don’t think is halal too.
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
so wait a minute if you ask the employee if it's halal and they say YES.. what other sources indicate that it's not???
ps: yes we went to the other branch!!
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
Halal certification that is usually available for customers to see at halal stores. Also, the owner could provide receipts of where they get their wholesale meat from, like an invoice or something. I never had to do this. I read a lot of reviews online before trying a new place.
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
no I was talking about Kati Roll in particular.. I asked them if it was halal and they said yes!
I also checked on zabihah.com and the reviews stated the owner is Muslim and it's halal.. what I am trying to say is that I will consider that halal.. I have never asked anyone to provide me written assurance.. I do take the verbal assurance for it to be halal and that's good enough for me. I have never eaten non-halal meat and I will be very upset/disappointed if I was lied to about it. Wallahu Alam!
Who told you that kati roll isn't halal???

It'd be a real blow if something mentioned in zabihah as halal would eventually turn as otherwise. I follow zabihah as the standard before going anywhere.
Regarding the question of wut else can we do, some of my friends ask for ther certificate or even ask them the source of their meat supplier, then call them and ask whether their slaughter is zabihah or no.
I know it gets a lil embarrassing to go into that detail after visiting any resturant but for the sake of our surity, there is no harm in going that far.

Then why even go out to eat then? shouldn't that person's word be enough? it's their sin if they lie....not yours.
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
If you read the reviews GTG on zabihah, they have mixed reviews on if they are halal or not. So I would just avoid it to be on the safe side.
And yeah I haven't asked anyone for certification or anything but I don't mind if somoene does. Agar dobut hai to that's what the certification is there for.
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
Spiral.. there was just one review about it being may be not halal and that was from 2005.. anyway, may Allah Taala forgive me if I have eaten something that wasn't halal!!!
but my question remains.. do you mind telling me please how did you find out it not being halal???
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
I remember reading it somewhere.. maybe on Yelp. But I did call them today. A lady answered she said yeah we are halal. I asked if she could provide certification or invoice of where they order their meat from. She said no. She said I just know that the owner is Indian. So I don't know GTG. But if verbal assurance is okay for you then you are good.
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
honetsly I never thought that there will be more than just the verbal assurance.. I always trusted the restaurant owner's word for it. but I guess that's a whole different world out there in NY!!! will have to be more careful in future!
we haev this turkish store in our neighborhood which sells halal whole chicken but they also sell pork so when I found out about it, I never bought the halal chicken from them.. just because I couldn't bring myself to buy that! so yes I have been picky in the past just because of my personal preferences... but I know so many people who eat halal and go to kati roll regularly so I was just shocked to hear that they may not be halal!
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
Sometimes some people dont differentiate between zabihah halal and halal....for some hala is just something permissible in Islam nad it doesnot necessarily have to be zabihah halal....
My sister who lives in NY told me sth like this...she went to a street cart which sold this halal chicken and beef and turkey sandwiches and shwaramas and stuff. He told her that chicken is zabihah halal and beef is halal...you get the point...??
So you might wanna inquire if they are zabiha halal or not...that is the one slaughtered acc to the Islamic ways.

Yea you may be right if the person you are asking is a muslim. But wut if he's not? But again, it all depends upon how much satisfied you wanna be. Some are satisfied by just verbal assurance while other go further ahead to confirm. Its pretty much like you ask a general question to same sane person that you know, but even after getting answer, you approach a scholar to get further details and confirmation.
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
we once went to a chinese restaurant,in england and bro says is it halal the girl says she's not sure ,another guy announces we are and adds proudly so is the pork!!!!we did a about turn mum n rest wr only half way up the stairs.....
once in pak the guy just started to slaughter the chicken and hubby goes what about takbir etc...and he says we dont have time for that kinda stuff..so we stopped going there...hubby actually slaughtered the chicken himself that time...
Re: Best Food in New York/New Jersey/Connecticut
well GTG, just because I think or read somewhere its not halal doesn't mean that's true. Maybe it is halal.
