Hello friends, sneha here,Agree with the Nanking post, love their food. South Plainfield location has better food, Jersey City location is a bit tight & tough to find parking. I love the Hakka noodles, Chili Beef, Chicken drumstick appetizers are awesome…Thanks lot,
I agree - tangra masala has phenomenal food. It can be quite busy, but its worth the wait.
Will check out some of the other suggestions though - thanks everyone.
The best mithai I have tried in NY is from Al-Naimat at Jackson Hts. I am very very very picky when it comes to sweets including mithai. If its not fresh or good, I wouldn't eat it. I have a box of mithai sitting on my table from shaheen that is awwwwwful. Its not fresh at all. I am going to throw it away. You should definitely try Al-Naimat. They make fresh mithai every few hours.
For chinese food lovers, try Fatima's Halal kitchen in Astoria. They have high ratings on Zabihah too. I didn't like Tangra Masala a bit. They put so much mirch in their food that it loses its flavor. Only thing I like from there is their lollypop chicken.
GTG - the key to good mithae is freshness. There is a big difference between what Shaheen has in prebox sitting in freezers of grocers versus what you order lets say for a shaadi or aqiqa which they will make it fresh.
I am not a laddo person but you have to try the patissa at Shalimar.
Last year I had some great mithai from Jackson heights...gulab jaman and jalebi were really good and fresh.
Too bad I don't know the name of the store...I just know they packed the sweets in golden cardboard boxes and not in those plastic containers ...
I am craving some gulab jaman now...:(

so we went to Jackson Heights this weekend.. first time ever and boy I am amazed!!! it's a whole different world out there!
We got mithai from Gourmet.. their barfi was FRESH, he brought it directly from the kitchen and laddoos were yum too!! But barfi was one of teh best mithais I have ever eaten here in the US!!
Dera's naan.. AMAZING!
We had a take out from kabab king for next day... yes yes we wanted to try it all in one trip.. it was okay.. it felt like their chicken karahi was cooked on high heat so it kind of lost the flavor and had too much oil.. chicken tikka was good though!!
Ok so.. about Cairo Steak House.
I have tried enough steaks in my lifetime. I absolutely love steaks. I have started eating Halal only after I got married... :o Thanks to hubz.
So I know what a good steak taste like. Cairo Steak House has a very nice atmosphere. The server is nice, she'll tell you what each and every steak is like. Its a very American style restaurant. I wanted to try filet mignon because that's one of the best cut. They were out of that. So I ended up ordering NYstrip and my husband ordered T-Bone or ribeye, don't remember. We dont' like blood oozing out of our food so we ordered well done. Lets just say this is wayyyyy too well done. It was almost like a cardboard. But okay maybe their medium well is better which we didn't try. My main dislike about this place is the high price. We are not eating in Manhattan or have that tall buildings around us atmosphere. The two dishes I mentioned cost us 120 ... that's a bit too much. Everything was great but I wouldn't simply go there because of the high price. 120 for just two dishes is way too much. We didn't order dessert or appetizer. By the time we went home we were hungry again and we've spent 120!!! I love good service, nice atmosphere but I want to see my money's worth. Just because they are NY's first halal steakhouse doesn't mean they charge like crazy.
If you want to try steaks, go try this place but make it a one time thing :)
Few blocks down there is a burger place called Crave Shack. Try that too if you are in Astoria. You'll like this place.
