Beauty myths exposed!

According to an Asiana mag article i read:

**.THE MYTH:**8 GLASSES OF WATER A DAY IS A MUST
We know it’s been declared by almost every magazine that guzzling eight glasses of water a day is essential – but the shocking truth is that there are absolutely no studies that have ever proved you must drink this much. Dermatologists say that the key is to drink what’s appropriate for you instead of paying too much attention to the exact amount. The right amount can vary from person to person depending on your weight and how effectively your body uses that water. And there is such a thing as over-hydrating – drinking too much water, but you’d have to drink a lot to get to that point.

THE MYTH: APPLYING OIL TO THE HAIR WILL MAKE IT GROW
No matter what your mother or grandmother keeps telling you the truth is that the actual oil does nothing to promote hair growth. However, regular head massages can stimulate the circulation in the scalp, which causes the hair bulb to be flooded with the nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth. The oil itself will only work to nourish and condition the hair and make it appear shiny and luscious.

THE MYTH: SKIN LIGHTENING CREAMS MAKE YOUR SKIN FAIRER
‘Harsh chemical bleaching ingredients such as hydroquinone and mercury and kojic acid can lighten even the darkest of skin tones, but, they do this by totally stripping the skin of its melanin, which is needed to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays. So whilst the results can be permanent, they are by NO means recommended’, says Athar Iman from Fairness Direct. Skin specialist and scientist, Sujata Jolly says ‘Certain skin lightening ingredients such as hydroquinone, mercury (which are banned in the EU) and kojic acid (banned in Switzerland, Japan and Korea) can lead to permanent, long term damage to the skin and in extreme cases even liver damage. From a purely cosmetic perspective rather than the desired effect of lightening the skin the bleaching agent can actually cause a darkening of the area. This then causes the user to apply more of the product to the skin, hence entering into a vicious cycle, which can eventually lead to ochrinosis – a darkening and thickening of the skin.’ So ladies, think twice before slathering on the creams and do your research on its ingredients. The good news is that there are products that can help you achieve an even complexion without the risk of any side effects. ‘Plant extracts such as willowbark, liquorice, mulberry and Vitamin C in their natural form are all ingredients that do not penetrate the basal layer of the skin so do not inhibit the production of melanin - making them a safe alternative. These natural extracts have been used effectively for centuries to help achieve a clearer and more even complexion’, adds Sujata Jolly.

THE MYTH: TEST THE COLOUR OF FOUNDATION ON THE BACK OF YOUR HAND
The colour of the skin on the hands is usually a lot darker than the colour of the skin on our face, mainly due to the fact that they have been exposed to a lot more UV light and a lot less exfoliaton. ‘The best way to test foundation is by drawing stripes on the jaw line and examining them in natural light. The colour that blends in perfectly is your shade’, says make-up artist Nina Haider.

THE MYTH: YOU SHOULDN’T WASH YOUR HAIR DAILY
‘Without a doubt, shampooing is the most effective way to keep hair shiny and healthy,’ says trichologist Philip Kingsley, author of the Hair Bible. ‘If it’s not, you’re either using the wrong product or using it incorrectly. Think about how dirty your face gets by the end of the day, and you take you hair to the same places! You wouldn’t dream of not washing or cleansing your face on a daily basis, so why leave out your hair? Frequent shampooing is the single most important way to happy hair days’, says Philip Kingsley. New York dermatologist Dennis Gross adds, ‘If hair seems dry and brittle, then shampoo as needed. But if it looks healthy, there’s no reason to stop.’

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

I'm not sure about the oil myth. Oil not only nourishes and conditions your hair, but also makes it stronger and less susceptible to damage, therefore stronger hair leads to healthier growth...trust me, i know what im talking about..with all the hair chemicals, various shampoos and hair colours i used, my hair had become very damaged and thin, and it was growing very slowly. then someone told me about "kalonji oil" and Mashallah, you wont believe the differrence it made.

shampoos are very damaging to your hair, maybe it is a good idea to wash your hair daily but perhaps, with a better shampoo that doesn't include all the chemicals present in department store shampoos. i once received a forward from a friend that said that the regular shampoos we use (pantene, head & shoulders, etc...), contain this carcinogenic chemical that is also used in car wash soaps to create bubbles. Thats probably why the expensive shampoos and soaps don't make so many bubbles!!

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

emblem: how often do u use kalonji oil?

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

i don't use it every time i take a shower, perhaps once a week...

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

how long it take take for it to work? (as in for it to show signs of improvement)

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

im very impatient when it comes to trying new thing, so if i dont see a difference within 3-4 uses, i stop using it, but i guess i did see a difference with this, thats probably why im still using it, i think it was within the first 2 weeks, i initially used it about every 3-4 days and i would leave it one for an hour (no more!), thats probably why...but yeah, it does take some time show improvement...and ive been using it for about a year now...

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

You know i used to think oiling hair makes it good was a myth but i have recently experienced it really helps condition your hair.I have dandruff issues and unless i oil my hair atleast once a week, it spirals out of control. But thanks for sharing the tips.

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

I used kalonji oil a fw weeks ago and i honestly dint see much diffrence :bummer:

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

I hate fizzy drinks there's too much sugar in them

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

And all that is a lie. Just because you receive something in an email doesn’t make it true.

The website below gives a detailed explanation

And the American Cancer Society debunks the myth too.

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/nws/content/nws_2_1x_debunking_the_myth.asp

These types of emails are always traced back to various multi-level marketing companies (such as Amway, etc), that have a purely commercial interest in getting people to stop buying products sold at big supermarkets, and buying their products instead. In other words, it’s a dirty tricks campaign.

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

Interesting!

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

that is quite interesting, thanks for the info....

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

yeah shampoos and soaps r just soaps that we use to wash our hair

shampoos dont make hair better they just wash them

so no shampoo is better than other

but sumtimes there r harsh chemicals that r used they can damage ur hair but they cant cause any other harm

and shampooing everyday is not bad at all

cuz ur scalp has skin too just like ur face

so wats gonna happen if u dont wash ur face eveyday??

ofcourse the pores r gonna get clogged so same is the case with ur hair

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

ok, shampooing your hair everyday will dry your scalp out, just like using soap on hands and not moisturizing it dries your hands out. no shampoo will 'moisturize' your hair for u, so in order to moisturize your scalp, oil is a good idea. it may not help with faster hair growth, but it does make hair stronger.
as for eight glasses of water myth, you only need to drink as much as you need. water does help, as it gets rid of the waste in your body.
i know nothing about skin lightening creams, so no comments on that 1.
as for facial skin being lighter than the back of hands, i would guess that would be the case if one wears gloves 24/7. i test foundations on my wrist, and have never had trouble getting the right one that way!

Re: Beauty myths exposed!

umm...............shampooing everyday doesnt dries out ur scalp cuz skin produces its own oils!

just like if u wash ur face in the morning and dont wash it again during the day so it wont cause drieness it will cause oiliness and clogged pores

same is the case with our scapl!!

skin gets dried out if washed too many times not once

and just like ur skin needs moisturizers to keep it moist just like that ur scalp needs moisturizing too

so if u moisturize ur skina nd keep it clean it will not cause ur skin any harm it will make it better

same is with ur scalp!
