grrr… the reason why some universities don’t offer DO is becaue its fairly new program. Next 10 yrs from now… i’ll ask you which universities offer it or don’t. Adding a single position to a program requires a lot of work and research let alone a whole another program…
and DOs are basically the same thing as MD.. they just believe in curing/treating patients in a differnet way..
here is a bit of wiki info for you:
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O. or DO) is a four-year graduate-levelacademic degree for physicians and surgeons in the United States. Holders of the D.O. degree are known as osteopathic physicians. D.O.s are trained much in the same way as M.D.s, with the addition of osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques.
To obtain a license to practice medicine in the United States, medical students must pass one of two licensing boards: USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam) or COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam). MDs and DOs are both eligible to sit for the USMLE. Only DOs are eligible to sit for the COMLEX.
Omg please don't post wikipedia information. For all we know, a DO doctor made that posting. You know anyone can write a Wiki posting right? It's really not credible.
I will ask you after 10 years which top universities are offering DO...we can compare notes...mark my word....none of these schools will ever offer a DO program. They will think it's beneath them.
And we have DO schools in Canada and they are not recognized by the Canadian government. They are not recognized by any government in the world except for the US coz the DO lobby is very strong there. DO's do NOT have the same opportunities as MD's. They never will....and if they are exactly like the MD doctors why was there a need to offer a DIFFERENT designation and make their schools different? Tell me if you know of ANY DO surgeons at one of the top universities in the US. In fact let me know if you know of ANY top DO in any specialty at the top research univerisites or hospitals.
And Carribbean med schools are a joke...you can just pay them the money and they'll get you the degree. There were so many people in my class who went to the Carribbean and I was well aware of their work ethic. They never studied, always partied and are now doing some residency in some small town in the US...yeah I doubt they will make competent doctors. But I know some amazing doctors from Pakistan. They are really good and are excellent physicians.
I'm not talking about the subtle differences between MD and DO or MBA from Harvard vs. UPenn.
I'm talking about the dude that tells me he is an MBA but run gas stations and asks me a question that is so poorly worded that I don't even understand what he is asking!

cherry, are you in Canada? does it make a difference in Canada as well which med school or law school you go to? I was under the impression that it didn't matter as much in Canada as the US - at least for these two fields. after all, there's what 12-13 med and law schools in the country, aren't there? I thought how you did in school in terms of marks, etc mattered more for top law internships or top residencies than did the name of the school in Canada - for medicine and law... please enlighten me.

No joke.
MBA = running a business (or something business related) ...........running a gas station= running a business........running a gas station = having a MBA

Off topic but the system in the UK is similar. There are just a handful of medical schools and the standard is the same throughout. BUT much later down the line when you're competing for a job as a consultant, it does matter where you studied if for example, the right people you need to know are all oxbridge graduates. Rather a lot of the "old boys club" my dear chap.
Yup you're right samb. In Canada, where you go med school or law school doesn't matter at all as long as you do well in school and get good grades. We have law students working at the top Bay street firms from all different law schools.
It does matter for an MBA though...only 3 or 4 are really good for an MBA. The rest are mediocre. In Canada they only look at your school if you're an MBA. For the rest of the fields, they look at your grades, personality and all that good stuff.

yeah, I think in the US there are a lot more med and law schools which also vary a lot in quality and prestige. a lot more spots available overall there compared to Canada for example.

gotcha. that's what I thought/heard as well. when there are so few schools, the US style school filters don't apply.
agreed on the business school front as well. there are at best 3-4 good business schools in the country (which are still second tier compared to top US schools imo). and even those ones are suffering badly currently.

yup, no matter how good the business schools are in Canada they are definitely not up to par with the top US schools. Also, they are not that well known in the world like the top US universities are.
MBA's should definitely be done from the top US business schools like Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, NYU, UPenn etc.
Poor English of desis has less to do with which school they graduated from but where they started from. If your primary education was in Urdu Medium, you could pass through MBA in flying colors but you may have poor communication skills.

True. Spelling and Grammar has nothing to do with an MBA. You can do very well in a good MBA program and not be that great in spelling....but yeah it will hurt you once you go in the work force if you're not able to communicate in English properly. The work force for an MBA demands excellent interpersonal skills.
They might not have the same opportunities, like if you wanna go into a competitive field like surgery, derm, something like that then yes your application will be at the bottom of the pool. But that doesn't mean they're not good doctors. I mean what if you get into John Hopkins and fail out?
Although, if I got into John Hopkins or Harvard for med I wouldn't even care if I failed out, i'd just live in that glory for the rest of my life.
what was this topic about, again? oh yes fake degrees. I dunno what to tell ya, people who lie suck. bass.
