Re: Awein MBA
a couple of things
1) where you get your MBA from matters..
2) with trend of focus areas in MBAs you may see diff types of ppl, generally easy to tell strat/mkt/fin people from ops mgmt/risk mgmt folks, as it attracts diff type of people who go into diff types of roles, so you may actually see variance in communication skills as well.
3) the top 10 thing has to be factored on a few other things
a-.rankings vary by field, e.g. Northwestern is ranked 1 in Marketing but is not ranked highly in Finance. secondly..there are some excellent schools in top 20 or even 30 or even 40 but have a program or 2 that is in top 10 or top 20.
b- in some cases a school that is not ranked in top 20 overall may have a program or two that are ranked as such. Thunderbird runs circles around many better known unis when it comes to international business, so an avg person may not know the rep or quality of a program but just look at overall MBA rankings, people in the industry know which programs are good and which are so so.
c-many of these schools have extremely strong business ties locally, schools like depaul, cincinnati, florida, kansas, drexel, villanova, temple, st johns, penn state, ohio state, georgetown, georgiatech, pepperdine, tulane, baylor, houston, U of san fan, I dont think any of these are in top 20 MBA programs but they are very strongly ingrained into regional business community.
while a general person not in the industry will not know anything about these unis, fact is that grads of these schools form a great part of the business workforce in the regions. their graduates may or may not get the networking strength of HBS, and u may not see them as often as CEOs of fortune 500, but they do hold senior positions in major companies.
its a whole diff issue than fake degrees or diploma mills or schools that are not aacsb accredited, or schools that are on the bottom rung
aacsb which is the accredition body for business schools has 480+ accredited graduate degree programs worldwide. now do we think that #40, 50, or even top 100 is a bad school? considering that there are 4200 degree granting institutions in US alone? of which just around 300 are accredited?
X2 how are these schools with regional/local strengths holding up in the current economy from you've seen/heard? better than hbs, wharton, etc or worse?
georgiatech isn't in the top 20? nearly everyone who graduates from there is like...whoosh
X2 how are these schools with regional/local strengths holding up in the current economy from you've seen/heard? better than hbs, wharton, etc or worse?
for people graduating? fresh grads in new roles or people who have been in the industry?
or from a university perspectve and size/quality of applicants?
schools performance varies, many people out of work decide it may be a good time to go get their grad degrees and prices may be cheaper or with family ties etc its easier to go to a local school.
I am no longer on my undgergrad and grad schools advisory councils, a few years ago when I was, i was able to see real data on applicant stats, class size, avg starting salaries, what %age employed in 3 months, 6 months etc..now I dont have direct insight into that
Re: Awein MBA
Once upon a time i thought it would be cool to get a second grad degree and go to business school. But after working for a while, I discovered Dilbert was right. MBA's don't know jack. I'd rather be a PE and stay out of the Matrix. Plus its so much more gratifying when you actually do something useful, as opposed to push paper around.
Btw, the only MBA's from Pak who might actually know something is IBA from Karachi and LUMS from Lahore. And even those have their fair share of sifarshis so beware.
i love you ![]()
the MBA phenom is unbelievable in Pakistan…all my khalas are like, vhaaat falaana isnt MBA?! I’m sorry but your degree loses its prestige when every second person on the street has it. my cousin has one work of work experience, hadnt even finished her MBA and she was invited to come back as a speaker for the business program at SZABIST…it really makes you wonder what their requirements are for people to come and lecture.
I'm meeting some guys who say they are MBA's... but they can't spell.
Is this common - jaali degrees, degrees that may have been purchased or from a ill reputable institution? Are they giving out degrees for free in Pakistan?
I friggin meet people with a good education, and they CAN'T SPELL for their life!
Then they say, oh yeah, our son is an MBA, etc. But turns out he isn't?
i hope you didn't open this thread to mock my thread. my friend's decision was based totally on Istakhara.
Re: Awein MBA
I have seen doctors spell *lyk dis cuz it's s0 kewl. gr8 yaaar. *
One of my friend scored a 93 on his USMLE and he still spells like that.
Re: Awein MBA
PCG - best thing to do is to look at the guy’s JOB … look at his position and where he works as opposed to his degree. The type of work he does and the position he holds speaks volumes. Because a guy with a legit degree from a legit university… will probably have a great job. And the whole unemployed argument thing…well u can always ask him where he was working before he lost his job. I mean… i’m pretty sure you are looking for a guy that is beyond undergrad mode at this point. Guys in their late 20’s usually have had some job experience at this point in their lives.
The dude that says he has an MBA but is running gas stations… yea extremely suspect. Last I checked you dont need any degree to be able to do that. Why would someone spend all that money just to do that???
… why bother even thinking about it. lol. If I were in your shoes (and I have been there) … in my head I would say “NEXT” (like how they do it in that whack MTV show).

An MBA is degree which is supposed to make an individual a good manager. A manager may or may not be good in linguistics. If he has excellent English speaking skills but cannot manage a department / group of people or his work then what's the use of his MBA degree.
I you meet someone who has a master's degree in English Literature and who cannot spell or speak English well then your above post seems valid.
Many many seths (business tycoons) in Pakistan are not very literate but they are excellent leaders .
We Pakistanis can never let go of ENGLISH speaking skill as a status symbol.
If a Japanese or Chinese cannot speak english well thats okay because it's not their mother tongue but if a Pakistani cannot speak English well he is viewed as a looser.
Re: Awein MBA
What a marriage has to do with spellings ??? Neither you need them while fighting nor while making out . It can't hamper communication as you can't be talking to your spouse online all the time either . As long as he is making good money and can keep u safe and happy , its good enough . One shouldn't be that picky .
Re: Awein MBA
WOW, I am flabbergasted at how many superficial people there are on GS. Just WOW. I feel that (and I'm going to go into mullah mode here) it is entirely up to the Lord how successful you are. You have to work hard, you have to have the right intentions, and He provides the rest. Just open the Good Book and see how many references there are to the fact that God gives in EXACT measure to EVERYONE. I feel that ultimately success/failure is controlled by how RIGHTEOUS you are instead of where your degrees are from.
He gives to whomever He wills and withholds from whomever He wills, regardless of degrees. I'm pretty much of the opinion "Allah Maalik".
Oh and PCG, if you keep judging people on spellings and over analyzing every guy you talk to, you will never settle down, everyone has flaws. I feel like you focus more on someone's flaws than on their good qualities. You expect perfection, which is not easy to get unless you are perfect yourself.
hahahaha
But can your conscience live with that? ;)
cherry - about 50% of the MBAs that I come across would have been better without the degree. They maybe would have saved some of their parent's hard earned money or lowered their student loans.
The market is saturated with MBAs that have no working knowledge and they don't even know how to APPLY their MBA to the a curent business environment or challenge.
They did their MBA because the wanted a line on their resume, or that's what they thought they were suppose to do OR they didn't find employment after undergrad or thought they would end up in higher up positions.
So you don't need to be an AWEIN MBA as PCG puts it from pakistan with GAS stations. We have many more AWEIN MBA just lurking around even after coming from good B schools.
Re: Awein MBA
I feel terrible for the hard-working students in Pakistan (yes, as it may be painful to many of you, they DO exist) who DONT go to IBA/LUMS or get to go abroad for whatever reason. I would be pretty pissed to work hard only for someone t come along and say that all my education is useless and I only succeeded cz the standards were low.
Sadly getting a masters/MBA/law degree wont make some people any less douches. :)
Re: Awein MBA
no need to feel sorry for them - most do tremendoulsy well.
I have seen very street smart folks that with little edcation but with a business mind sharp as a whip. They climb up the coporate ladder very fast or even have thier own businesses that do very well because they can gauge the market potential for their products or services.
If there is a will - there is a way.
Re: Awein MBA
aajkal economy kharaab hay..
MBA might mean 'munda bayrozgaar ay' :p
Re: Awein MBA
In the business world what matters are the results. I have a friend who has an MBA from Jamshoro University in Hyderabad in Finance and she is taking $20,000 take home pay every month! I myslef have an MBA from a lower ranked school and myCEO told my Wharton University MBA boss to leran how to write a business letter frrom me.

I never questioned how useful or futile their MBA is. I just asked if one's conscience can live with a fake degree. You can lie to people but you can't lie to your conscience.
And regarding people who get a degree to just put a line on their resume is exactly what I was saying. A lot of people especially desis will do anything and everything to get an MBA, MD or JD from no-name universities just to get that recognition. They might not even like the profession and their talent and skills could have been better adapted towards something else but they are so obsessed with a label that they spend hundreds of thousands just to get a degree and they are not even good at what they're doing. It's called thinking outside the box which sadly desis are scared to do. Do whatever you are interested in but make sure you strive to be the best in that field! So many desis slog through crappy institutions, running after some designation and end up with a huge loan, no job and just a label they they can market to rishta aunties.
