I’m meeting some guys who say they are MBA’s… but they can’t spell.
Is this common - jaali degrees, degrees that may have been purchased or from a ill reputable institution? Are they giving out degrees for free in Pakistan?
I friggin meet people with a good education, and they CAN’T SPELL for their life!
Then they say, oh yeah, our son is an MBA, etc. But turns out he isn’t?
Sometimes they don't have jaali degrees. I have a friend who is doing Phd from good uni here but his spelling are awful. He is very smart and all... Just can't spell.
First, it has nothing to do with Pakistan. In fact Jalee degree business is more widespread in West (US, UK, Canada etc) than in Pakistan. In fact most of the universities handing out MBA degrees in Pakistan are based in some condo or backyard in above mentioned countries.
Secondly, you should appreciate the fact that they are so desperate for you that they are paying for these degree :)
and finally, your best bet would be to marry some typist. Normally they have perfect spelling :D

True. I myself have met people who do indeed hold certain degrees but their grammar/spelling etc isn't quite what you'd expect. I guess the standard of education varies. Even at work we have programmers/analysts who can't hold a proper conversation for their life, but they are amazing at what they do (code, debug, analyze etc.)
btw, MS word (read: computer) has a lot to do in ruining the spellings of people (me included). Knowing English well is not the criteria to judge people's intelligence warna chaptey abhee bhee china main suttey laga rahey hotey
^ You are right. MS word cannot correct you if you mistakenly type 'then' instead of 'than' or 'their' instead of 'there' .. I know through personal experience :D
PCG, this is very common. Ive noticed sooo many people who are in IT or in technical fields do not know how to spell properly to save their life. It has nothing to do with their education level...more to do with what they're good at. Plenty of people get through MBAs and PhDs with poor spelling. Spelling doesnt mean intelligence...at least not now when you have MS Word to correct your spelling for you.
Ive also noticed English teachers have the worst writing...ironic but true.
but yeh, the MBA crap.. last weekend i got stopped at the mall by a desi who insisted on calling me Ali and that i was some old acquaintance of his. turned out to be quixtar as usual, but before confessing to that, when i asked him what he did for a living, he said aamm bee ayy..
IMHO MBA is not that hard, come on yaar… business studies… mostly common sense. And before anyone with an MBA starts yelling at me, I have one and yes, it was easy peasy. I had a tougher time with 9th grade physics and chemistry, than Economics or Accounting at MBA level.
My husband’s spelling is HORRIBLE, he has an engineering degree from one of the top universities in Pakistan; he makes double of what I make and has more interpersonal skills and leadership qualities than I do… go figure.
Verdict: Intelligence cannot be gauged based on spellings and command over a language.
