This is not the philosophically question asking if man is inherently good but rather a personal one. Do you consider yourself to be a ‘good’ person on your own accord or are you a good person due to your religion? To clarify the question, ‘good person’ in this case would be one that treats others kindly and with respect, honest and don’t steal, one who doesn’t harm others mentally or physically, one that helps others in need. Are you a good person (or strive to be one) because it’s just who you are or are you a good person because your religion dictates you to do so ( assuming your religion teaches you values and morals which would match the definition of what I describe above as a good person)?
Mod’s feel fre to move to religion forum if that is more fitting.
Re: Are you a good person by your own accord or by religious prescription?
I try to be good person and trying to follow the religion helps in that direction too.
good point
i understand the OP's question as " do you do good because your religion tells you, or because its in your heart "
good is good aslong as it benefits someone positively, but if the do-gooder is merit-making than i believe it has everything to do with intention
like me donating money to charity and advertizing my donation to my whole circle of friends in the name of good, is egotistically driven, but as some good will come of it, it is good, but not truely altrueistic
i believe in karma, and i believe that altruism is one of the most noble endevaurs, such as the people going doing to wartorn countries acting as human shields, thats one of the most beautiful things ic an think of :)
Re: Are you a good person by your own accord or by religious prescription?
Asifk,
Is Karma different than the major religions? Be good be rewarded, be bad and you are punished. If you have a belief in Karma are you acting good because it is selfserving in the end?

You could lets say donate $10,000 of which donate $1000 with advertising to circle of friends as "encouragement" for them to donate as well, I think that would be a good deed too.
Re: Are you a good person by your own accord or by religious prescription?
according to me.i feel that i am not a good person and have not always been kind to others but i do bother trying to be good.though i am not religious person but daily i found my self to saying somthing like that Oh Allah forgive me, change my Heart, show me the right path.

well both the same and not the same
karma is cause and effect
basically a kind of scientific approach to life where being good is basically the most logical thing to do
if im acting good for future rewards? not really :) because i believe in rebirth, and this is i believe is circular, so even if im a universal king, i am subject to death and loss, therefore anything conditioned like this is unsatisfactory in the end :d
i do good because it feels the best :) the rest is just fringe benefits :p
