I try to be a good person on my own accord, religious prescription(s) serve to reinforce that goodness and remind me of humility.

Interesting question indeed.
If I have to be honest, and it might sound weird.. I think that in some peoples eyes I am a good person, while other people just hate me.
So I think I am good, but I can be really bad. Some times when I .. let's say.. slap my brother I don't feel bad because he really pissed me off. But there are other times when I think, 'ahh, why did I hit him?!'. I feel guilty and regret it. So I am very 'So whateveerrr'.
And now I do not make any sense but yeah. I don't know.

I try to be a good person on my own and rty not to lie, never steal or cheat or and what not

but religion does play a major role

If I dont gamble or drink, that is because of religion. If I did not have relationship before marriage and dont have bunch of kids running around who were born out of wedlock, its because of religion.

Religion is not an obligation for goodness . goodness is an element of the religion :hmmm: i think

That element is very subjective in nature ..

for example, form islamic perspective

if you are a female and do hijab , its that element of goodness you are following

but for your christian friend, it does not make sense, in fact she might think that you’ve been surpressed by your religion

again it varies with individual's perspective .
I will wear hijab only when i'm fully convinced , or fully understand , that doing so will benefit me , Because there's no compulsion I think in any religion.

So my christain friend maybe wrong .

I think we are all born with our own tendencies and characteristics but along the way, are influenced by several factors such as upbringing, society, culture, education, etc. I think we refine ourselves or get disciplined because of religion. For example, if let's say I never had alcoholic drinks growing up, but came to this country one fine day and was exposed to all kinds of people where occasional drinking was considered alright, I could sway a bit here and there. However, if I am trying to follow a religious path, or check if that act is permissible in my religion, I may be able to make a better decision.

So I guess religion goes hand in hand with our nature...
