Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

I am a British Pakistani girl and now that ive finished my degree, my parents are on the hunt for potential marriage partners. sob lol. Currently they have found two potential suitors for me; one is a British Pakistani like me and the other is an American Pakistani. I am so confused as to who to pick as I genuinely like them both (eeek sounds a bit weird right?) Although I have first hand knowledge of how British Pakistanis are I unfortunately have no knowledge of American Pakistanis. I need information and advice as to the American Pakistani culture (also BritPak culture will be welcome as id love to hear other peoples views). What are the differences? What are the similarities? Who would you go for? whos better? (Taking the personalities out of the equation and concentrating on purely where there from and how theyre socialised into mainstream british/American culture). Id love for it to be detailed advice and info. Thanks!

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

Any advice here is demanding gross generalization and ignoring things like personal preferences and individuality. So let me speak on behalf of all the Pakistani Americans since you so much insist upon it. Pop culture wise, there isn't going to be too much of a difference since Britain, like the rest of the world is influenced by American pop culture. The question is where will you be living after marriage. Are you going to have to move to the U.S if you marry the American? Do you want to? That would mean moving away from your family. Did you think about that?

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

I already have a pretty good idea about our personal preferences and individualities, which is why therefore I want information on the general differences between Pakistanis in the UK and those in the US so it will help me make my mind up about whether I want to move or not. (Thought I made that point pretty clear.. guess not :/)

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

If you were a guy, it would be pretty simple. Marry both. I would say go with the Brit. Never easy to come to new country, plus its getting tough for Muslims here everyday.

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

I wouldn't know one way or the other, but to "notthatguy", I disagree friend, I don't think it's getting tough for Muslims in the USA, I think it's getting tough for extremist Muslims in the USA. Moreover, things are really hard for Muslims in the UK and racism is much more rampant.

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani’s and Pakistani Americans?

well ok i’ll tell you something that no one ever will until its too late.
the pakistani americans have these tiny horns in the middle of their lower back … they use it to draw in extra oxygen and nutrients from their surroundings, which is why they are taller and generally bigger then british pakistanis. it also makes them louder and better able to communicate with GOD … so they are better Muslims too.

there is other stuff too but this was the most important bit … sachi … mein jhoot bolon tau tumhein kawa katey

Is being close to family a consideration for you? Do a pros cons list :)

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani’s and Pakistani Americans?

BritPak is PersianPak getting rishta from AmeriPak :mudhosh:

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

This would be a no brainer for me. I would go with the guy in the UK. He's grown up in the same country, is familiar with my specific culture, I won't have to worry about moving to a different country and starting a totally new life there.........and I won't have to fly across the ocean to visit my parents.

If you have a guy in the UK who you like and you can see a building a future with him.....why would you even consider a guy across the ocean? Whether or not you want to settle down in a different country and have that much distance from your own parents/siblings is something only you can decide. I fail to understand how knowing the differences b/t American versus British Pakistanis has anything to do with how far you move from your parents.

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani’s and Pakistani Americans?

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

I have seen both as I was born in Britain, bred in Pakistan and married a guy from Pakistan who lived in the States (not born and raised in the States). Culturally you would be closer to a guy from Britain, speaking in general. The language is a bit different as you know. However, I personally know a British Pakistani girl who married an American Pakistan and is doing well. Obviously the accents are different, which should be a no brainer but you do fell closer to people who speak the way you do.

Re: Are there any differences between British Pakistani's and Pakistani Americans?

Yes, why can;t the brits speak clearly like us americans?

This doesn't make sense. How can you possibly evaluate your potential spouse by taking his personality out of the equation? Moreover, by analysing how "they're socialised into the mainstream culture", aren't you basically judging the influence of the culture on his personality? So you're actually not taking the personality out of the equation at all.

If that didn't make sense to you, here's an example. When my sister got engaged to a Pakistani from Pakistan, from our end there was no fussiness over the fact that he was brought up in a completely different country. We loved him, end of story. But we later found out that some of his relatives did in fact try to discourage his family from going ahead with the wedding because we have been brought up outside of Pakistan so "bahar wali larkiyan pata hai kaisi hoti hain". Had my BIL judged my sister purely on the basis of the culture she's been raised in, that would've been quite retarded considering our personal values are very much in line with Islam. My sisters and I are actually more traditional in a way than Pakistani girls living in Pakistan. We'd never wear sleeveless shirts, for example. So when his relatives were like omg bahar ki larkiyan pata nahin kaise kapray pehenti hain... I would've said umm yeah Pakistani larkiyon k kapray dekhay hain? Hum se toh do hath agay he hain.

And that is why I feel judging people on the basis of the country/culture they've been raised in doesn't make sense. If their personalities have all the right traits that you're looking for, why does it matter if they were raised in London or Kuala Lumpur?
