Haha!!!! seriously, why be content making gol gol roti and not building sky scrapers, I believe in new avenues, degrees used to be such a big thing for us now I am seriously thinking about trades, You become a Journeyman then you can open your own company and hire some apprentices to do all the work. Most of our contractors don't work physically now and get the apprentices to do all the work, I had calculated that our framing contractor was making 40k a month only on our job site and he had crews working at 6 jobsites.

But to put everything in context, as much as the salaries in Fort Mac may be higher than average, the cost of living is outrageous, which means that how far a dollar earned will take you is limited. You earn more, but you spend a LOT more.
The only people for whom these higher salaries are worthwhile are the ones who receive additional benefits and allowances like housing provided from their employer or people who are trying to build their resume.
Sure, maybe 10 years down the road Fort Mac may become more developed, but right now it seems like its in the back of beyond (its pretty northerly).
As for the thread topic itself - money to be made in trades and women entering trades:
a) nothing wrong with wanting to pursue a career in trades, man or woman.
b) the salaries Knight has mentioned are exaggerated when considered against the average (non-Fort Mac stats).
If you google it, the "average" salary for an electrician, you get a wide range - $50,000 to $85,000 - this all depends on what type of electrician (master, union/non-union/specialization) - so context is everything!
And more than that - the same can be said of any profession - you have people who make median salaries and those that earn below or above the median - so context is everything!
Calgary is very affordable, median household income is 94k. Alberta as a whole compared to earnings has affordable housing.

Knight is backing up his claims with links and facts. I for one think he is a smart.dude and has a lot to offer. Bantering is good. But he makes a good case.
Anyway abt 2 yrs ago the Alberta prospects were discussed in our vibrant Business forum. A lady pointed out the harsh conditions. .and why no one wants to go there and get their hands snowy.

If you don’t mind hard work Fort Mac is a dollar printing press, a minimum of 100k is guaranteed. I might send my boy there for maybe 4 years, save money so he can start his own service company. My friend was a concierge at a hotel he went to Fort Mac, he does clean up of pipes. It is hard work but as I said he makes 150k. People from all over the world are coming here. I have heard about this pashtun guy who got there 10 yrs ago and started building houses on the side. He is worth in tens of millions. Don’t have to worry about housing the oil companies provide housing and food and even maid service.

Southie For Mac is harsh but Calgary is a world class city. If you are a young grunt you should go to Fort Mac, one of my customer was saying the smarter trade guys who don’t squander their money can retire in 10 yrs. Calgary and Edmonton are the service centres for For Mac. We have a population of 3 million and I think there are 160Bill in capital projects. Excerpt from website.
