Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

Must be one of the most exasperating people in real life to actually have a conversation with face to face. There is no actual response to what any other poster contributes to your thread unless it's with 'I am awesome, my kids are awesome, my wife is awesome and abused inside a wrapper until I released her, engineers and doctors, janitors and cabbys and space moon scientists making a kajilion dollars driving around in exotic spaceships living in Fort Mcmurray Arabia after graduating from McGill' etc etc etc etc. Where in any of that is actual conversing about any of your subjects? It's about you and you and you and you. You probably have a seat to the moon too, please tell us more about that.

Even if Fort McMurray is boom town, so what? How does this relate to Life1. Wouldn't you enjoy this conversation in the cultural or careers forum?

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Hummers are the most distasteful vehicles ever, even by truck standards. And to top it off she painted it pink. Goes to show that money can't buy class.

This of course does not include the original military spec Humvee. Those babies rock with their camouflage and all.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

I sure as hell don't like the color pink but I think the whole idea behind painting an all man vehicle pink is about making a statement. It's a good way to confuse people because we are used to categorizing everything. You find it distasteful/unclassy simply because it's different. It's not necessarily tacky or shows less class. Have you seen any classy plumbers? I don't care what color you paint a Hummer, it is still an expensive dabbay wali gari.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

@Saaed military spec Hummer kitna deti hai?

It's probably a statement car for business and to get noticed like one of the shawarma places in our city whose multicolored mom van has a huge gold crown on it because their restaurants name is the garlic king. Hideous as heck but everyone knows who they are. They have two actually, one has like a snow dome on top with a life size replica of the owner in a kings outfit. Lol so tacky but kinda hilarious and now even you guys know about him haha

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

I see human rights violations written all over hiring a women-only crew - it's gender discrimination in the workplace, only reverse.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!

As much as it pains me to admit, Northern Alberta has a dearth of employable people, so they NEED people to come from out-of-city and province to do jobs at every level. Here is a recent job posting - a job at Mickey D’s:

**McDonald’s
Title: Food counter attendant
****Terms of Employment: **Permanent, Full Time, Shift, Overtime, Weekend, Day, Night, Evening
Salary: $13.00 Hourly for 40 hours per week, Other Benefits, Medical Benefits, Dental Benefits, Disability Benefits, Group Insurance Benefits, Vision Care Benefits
**Anticipated Start Date: **As soon as possible
**Location: **Fort McMurray, Alberta (20 vacancies )
^ But that needs to be taken with a grain of salt because while wages and salaries are above average, so is the cost of living (rent/mortgage) so it all balances out…

If I were an ambitious young person looking to make my mark in life, I’d move to Fort McMurray, Alta. To really succeed in life takes a little talent, a lot of hard work and usually a smidgeon of luck. But your odds are much improved when you live and work in a place that’s growing by leaps and bounds, and in Canada, you can’t beat ‘Fort Mac,’ or ‘Fort McMoney’ as some people call it.
I’ve visited the area three times over the last decade, and the city’s growth is spectacular. The most recent tour was this past week. Here are some statistics:
The average household income in Fort Mac is about $180,000. The average house price is almost $750,000. The majority of the population is under 40. The unemployment rate is about four per cent. The population in the region is 104,000, has doubled in the past decade and will grow by double-digits for years.
They work hard, make a lot of money and want to spend it. They are having trouble doing the latter. For starters, there’s a lack of real estate in Fort McMurray. The city is addressing that. Once it does, though, there may be a shortage of entrepreneurs. Most people in Fort Mac work directly in the oil patch at one of the many big oilsands mines, or indirectly. As mentioned, they earn a nice living and enjoy amazing perks. That average house price may sound like a lot, and it is, but keep in mind the average household earns almost $200,000 a year. Plus many employers offer incentives to keep employees.
One company gives its workers a $50,000 interest-free loan to buy a home, which is forgiven after five years, provided they stay. Property taxes are reasonable because the oilsands companies pay so much of the cost of the city through their taxes, and of course, it being Alberta income taxes are low. Plus, there’s no sales tax.
That means lots of disposable income looking for a home. What do these people want? Services, from health care to financial advice to pampering. So if you’re a doctor or dentist or veterinarian, you could quickly build up a nice practice up there.
If you’re an aspiring financial planner or stock broker, you couldn’t find a better place to start building your book of business. Young people with lots of money need good advice.
Want to cut your teeth in real estate? It’s cutthroat up there, but if you make it, you’ll learn a lot and make a lot, too. Want a career in hotel management? Business is brisk and the hotels (more than a third of which are owned by Winnipeg’s own Temple REIT) are always looking for good people.
How about starting a hair salon with an eye to building a chain? Or starting a retail store or restaurant? The nice thing about doing it in a place like Fort McMoney is there’s a wide margin of safety for mistakes. With all of that demand and wealth, you can afford to make more mistakes as you learn than you can in a more mature setting.
And of course, if you just want to earn a nice living in the trades, maybe driving a 400-tonne truck or operating a massive shovel, you can make a six-figure salary with overtime. Plus, you could earn a degree in, say, engineering. The oil companies employ thousands of them and many will help pay for your education.
This is not to say Fort Mac doesn’t have challenges. Finding a place to live is not easy, for instance. It’s far from everything. The winters are long and dark.
But the city is spending a lot of money making the place livable. There’s a plan to build an arena to attract a WHL hockey team. The new sports complex would make most cities envious. The airport is being expanded and you can count on more flights. It’s not hard to go south in the winter to escape the cold.
Over the next couple of decades, tens of billions of dollars will pour into Fort McMurray as the economy expands. If you’re ambitious and looking for a rewarding career adventure, you could do worse than start your career there. Find a need and fill it is the entrepreneur’s credo. It’s a good place to do it.

Agreed. I can't believe they allow it.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

The title is a lie. I want my money back.

Duuude. Seen ratings? Its a hit.
Cannot wait.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Hummers and muscle cars...not pink ones though.

To your topic though:

If my daughter decided to start her own company that employed women who could do labor jobs...I'd support her...in fact I'd help her get started.

I believe a woman finds herself when she becomes independent. Independent not just financially but independent mentally, emotionally and spiritually...she thinks for herself and does not need anyone.

She can want someone...but she should never need someone.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

I think so differently, I saw that my heart sang. I thought wow female empowerment, didn't think of all other details. By the way I see a lot of girls on our job sites, you can become an apprentice at 16 with school programmes and start making 18/hr, by 22 you make 37.50/hr. With over time you make over 100k an hour, open up your own company you can do really good.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!

Women Building Futures | Women in Trades | WBF

Website for govt encouraging females to join the trades, we have a shortage here, the oilcompanies fly workers in and out of South America.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

So irrelevant. 100k an hour? where do I sign up?

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

That hummer is for marketing. Pink is to get noticed by women ( w/ high earning potential ) or men ( single, lonely boom town guys ). People tend to remember the weird. Now if it is for marketing, chances are the company owns it not the woman driving it.

It must be legal, coz I have seen a couple of landscaping companies advertise here as all-women. Maybe they can get around the gender-discrimination clause by hiring a male janitor or something.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

Mujhe bhi bta dein

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

The centre for battered and abused.

Re: Are the desi girls ready to strap on the belts!!!!!!!!!!!

But to put everything in context, as much as the salaries in Fort Mac may be higher than average, the cost of living is outrageous, which means that how far a dollar earned will take you is limited. You earn more, but you spend a LOT more.

The only people for whom these higher salaries are worthwhile are the ones who receive additional benefits and allowances like housing provided from their employer or people who are trying to build their resume.

Sure, maybe 10 years down the road Fort Mac may become more developed, but right now it seems like its in the back of beyond (its pretty northerly).

As for the thread topic itself - money to be made in trades and women entering trades:

a) nothing wrong with wanting to pursue a career in trades, man or woman.
b) the salaries Knight has mentioned are exaggerated when considered against the average (non-Fort Mac stats).

If you google it, the "average" salary for an electrician, you get a wide range - $50,000 to $85,000 - this all depends on what type of electrician (master, union/non-union/specialization) - so context is everything!

And more than that - the same can be said of any profession - you have people who make median salaries and those that earn below or above the median - so context is everything!
