are our elders more stylish/proper?

Re: are our elders more stylish?

PP, no my dad wears shalwars kurtas a lot too. and it does get creased during the day. I guess that is what happens with kurta shalwars. I think its more about the initial effort, i.e. at start of the day, fixing up yourself, and then dressing properly, even if you are at home and unell, or at home with no plans to go anywhere and no one expected to come and visit, but he is still dressed up enough to be able to go anywhere at a minute’s notice.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

well, its the generation thing. I see the same in my dad too. Even though he is retired now but i never see him without shave. Even though he is not exactly the way, he used to be but he still is quite careful about his grooming. He doesn't just buy shirts - has to be the best collars and cuffs etc. etc.
On the other side, I really don't care if am at home. My PJs never match my shirt (actually i like it that way - why not different color combinations). But am quite proper & well dressed when go out though. And same is with my brother.

We wouldn't see that kinda grooming now since its the new generation. People are getting more casual.
The interesting example comes from the old Cricket test Matches where we see British sittng in the stadium wearing suits (or in proper attire) while now people go there in whatever. so ofcourse at home, they don't care either.

Re: are our elders more stylish?

OK, so we'r not allowed to share random 'dad' stories?

Il let my dad know hes not 'proper'.

Re: are our elders more stylish?

No thats not the point, I just noted that its 2 different things we are talking about, so when you say he’s the same, I wanted to clarify that we are talking about two different things.

I did not say anything about your dad being proper or not, I tried to explain what I meant by the topic.

my apologies if it came across as a dig on your dad, that was not the intent.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

CB so what you are saying is that part of it may be habits and part of it is that this just how things were. I can see the logic in that. I mean thats what they were used to growing up. People wore blazers to go to schools and universities.

explains the clothing bit very well. I think the grooming bit may be part of that, and part of just being more disciplined than us.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

moms seem to be missing in this discusion of elders. :(

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

well, maybe i can talk on behalf of my mom here.
she would say, "doesn't matter if its the weekend. Wakeup early, take shower / shave, brush your hair, wear something proper (no PJs) and then come for the breakfast".

Re: are our elders more stylish?

Erm, you need to scrap your apology, I was not offended, not in the slightest.

I thought you were talking about dressing proper and for men in my family, dressing proper means wearing a suit. Hence the father wearing a suit for a cinema outing.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

lol... thats alot of work to do just to get breakfast.. :p

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

i was going to say something about my dad, but i guess i’ll comment on my mom instead. As far as i can remember i have never seen my mom look bumish (unless ofcourse she was sick). She was a teacher for 20 years, and every morning she would shower and get dressed, even on weekends. She said it had to do a lot with her father who was in the military, and expected his wife and kids to look proper. But then again my dad is the same way and his dad was a doctor. When i lived at home my parents expected me to look proper too, but since i moved out its all been downhill.:bummer:

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

breakfast, whats that?
damn I am so undisciplined, its either something on the run, or on weekends it brunch :D

I do think that will have to change and as kids start growing up, I would start having breakfast together as a family every day. It was nice when I was a kid.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

^ One can argue that you never grew up. :)

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

and yet its still all about him...

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

well, who listens.
I usually eat brunch on the weekends. always skip breakfast.

I remember once it was like noon time and my brother was watching a game. His hair were all messed up. My mom comes with the hair brush as says, “aao mai apnay baitay kay baal sahi kar doon”. she said it in such a funny & sarcastic way :rotfl:

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

one could argue that you cant read or comprehend, I was talking about the kids growing up, not myself.

I refuse to grow up.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

CB hahaahahha thats too funny. what was his reaction?

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

on a second thought, thats a pretty good diet plan eh?

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

being his mom’s son, he actually let her do his hair. He asked her to bring the gel too :rotfl:
and he did that on purpose so my mom won’t say that again to him.

Re: are our elders more stylish/proper?

the very same thing came to my mind when we all were going through our old pix with my brother in law .in every pic my dad is dressed up real nice , whether it was before going to bed .
