THis is an example of how fundamentalists , mysogynists and Taliban use religious texts to pervert the rights of women. They will resort to religious texts and twist IT to their purpose to keep the women in the house, uneducated and in burqas.

Im not degrading the status of this female maazun, I'm trying to defend the notion that people believe the words of Quran and Ahadith have been twisted. If they have been, its only by the likes of Salman Rushdie, Irshad Manji etc.
I agree hands down with Mirch on this one, nothing special about Nikkah, two witnesses, and two people accepting each other is the basis of it. People make it a bit too complicated.

People should only engage in 'innovatory' practicies if the merits outweigh the fitaan. Not being a scholar I cannot deny the female Maazun, but it is another chip away from the wall of tradition to practice this. It is not about reason nor is it about male domination ... some people find it a convenient bash on Muslims who simply want to follow the prophet Muhammad's (SAW) actual example in life.
Lastly, it gives no man a greater rank to be a reader of nikkah nor does it the merit the woman to follow this example or attempt to equate her life with one of a male counterpart. It is simply an action ... those who wish to do it thinking it liberation are already living with defeatist mindsets ...

Irshad Manji is the new modern muslim woman. More muslim women are being englightened and not suppressed by our mysoginisitic interpretations of the the Koran, and hadiths and sunnahs.
Only men are afraid they will become equal to women. Islam of 14oo years ago where mostly ignorant people recieved Islam has no place in society today., There are countless muslim women like me who believe men have *******ized islam for their own purposes to control and suppress women.
My sisters and I are in society to get muslim girls enlightened that they don't have to live like their mothers, grandmothers subjugated to man's will as if this is ordained by Allah.
Don't concern yourself with menstrual cycle. Guess what. I have attended mosque during my mentral cycle and Allah has not stricken me. Do you know why? Cause this is man's garbage he is spewing not truly Allah's words. I have had intercourse during menstrual cycle. If woman takes a bath before intercourse its amazing how the blood flow will stop. Men are too squeamish when it comes to blood be it menstrual or not and they have used Allah to condemn us and cast us aside during these periods.
WELL MEN, NO MORE. THERE IS IRSHAD MANJI, THERE IS ME AND THERE ARE COUNTLESS OF US SISTERS READY TO EMPOWER THE MUSLIM WOMAN.

Burqa has no place in a modern educated muslim woman's life. Staying behind a man has no place in a modern educated muslim woman's life. Remeber it was man who wrote Koran, hadiths and sunnahs and not the hand of ALlah. People with logic like yours will never see that they **are just as equally as **rigid and narrow minded and judgemental as the people they are against. Yall are just on teh opposite end of the spectrum, that's the only difference.

The problem with religion is its male domination. When will we see the first female Hazar Imam is when the Roman Catholic Church recognizes female priests. How is it that these two religions give power to the male and nothing to the female. Men will argue they do, and stupid women will believe it so. Educated and enlightened women know this is not the case, it is very patriarchal. Religion beget when women were thought of as property and weak. When the male child got all the benefits and the female nothing but a bargaining tool for marriage prospects.
Religion in today's society where women are becomng increasingly independent and not dependent upon men for survival and livelyhood needs major evolution . The recognition that women were born with brains and that they can lead people spiritually also and be fully capable of spreading the word of ALlah/God. Before civil law men controlled society by religious law ----well things are slowly changing for women to advance .
I am the modern muslim woman and ALlah has blessed me with the ability to realize I am only a subject to him and not to a mortal man. TO the mortal man I am a partner if he can not handle this well then it's his ego and insecurities not mine and he can no longer hide behind the excuse it's the will of Allah. Good for you both. Every man should want for his own daughter to realize her potential as a strong, smart Muslim woman and to never be treated like crap by anybody or be kept ignorant and downtrodden..I'm sure everyone can agree to this, "conservative Muslims" as well as "liberal-minded" folks......right? :)

Sara if wearing a tent over your head and body makes you feel enlightened then so be it. Many women do not have independent choice to do otherwise. I have girlfriends from aghanistan who did not have choice and today cause they live here do and they would for no money in the world return to wearing burqa or their abusive husbands. Do women have choice to have opportunity to have four husbands?
Choice is one thing, brainwashed and believing you do have choice when you don't is another. Some women don't realize there exists choice.
There are women who are smart but continue to live in abusive households with a$$whole husbands. These women are dumb. SOme have no choice to leave due to financial , feear etc reasons, Others who are in abusive relatinships be it parental or spouse know of options to rescue themselves have the CHOICE made available to them.
I have friends who help women escape abusive families and men. Men who are still looking for the women who escaped from them and these women are now still in 'hiding' from them but pursuing lives of their own. WOmen who are hiding from their own miserable families. They now have Happy lives. These women have found an option out and chose it.
You can not believe how many exist in abusive relationships with male or family and have no option and no aid to get out.
They exist in all cultures, in all faiths and in all countries abused women , subjugated women and women who are denied education, employment and empowerment. And it sickens me when men use God to control the female as if by divine right. In the west woman was considered property of man because Church deemed it so,. Well that has been outlawed. Civil law NOT religious law is what society and all societies should attain. HUMAN RIGHTS !!!!! IS FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN AND NOT ONE OVER THE OTHER.

Irshad Manji doesn't really believe in Islam per se. She believes that she should be allowed to pick and choose what elements of the Quran she likes...and discard everything else. The woman is essentially a secular humanist/agnostic who lacks the intellectual honesty to renounce Islam, even though it does not reflect her personal beliefs...and who's decided to jump on the post 9-11 'lets criticize Islam' bandwagon. Anyone who associates so closely with Ayan Hirsi Ali and Salman Rushdie doesn't really deserve an iota of credibility or authority in discussing Islamic beliefs.
I think Reza Aslan is a much more respectable Muslim ijtehad advocate/modernist...though I don't even agree with everything he says.

If there's nothing specifically prohibiting it in Islam (which, as far as I know, there isn't...especially when you consider the fact that even having someone "perform" the nikkah is optional); and it helps people, both Muslim and otherwise, realize that Islam respects the rights of women in society, then I don't how the perceived harms outweigh the benefits.
However, this really isn't something new. I've personally been to a wedding here in the US where the nikah was done by a woman...and I know Asma Jahangir has presided over nikahs in Pakistan before too...

Ayan Hirsi Ali ALONG with Irshad Manji are great role models for muslim women. MAY Allah continue to bless them on their path of enligtenment. Inshallah. A man would not understand , unless he chose the path of modern day enlightenment. My father bought me Irshad Manji's book for my birthday few years ago . He found her favorable, quite favorable but then my father is uncomparable to most.

It’s women like me I would like to think give them the knowledge and the way to escape. All they need is the fortitude, the stamina and belief in self. And belief in self is the hardest thing for many of them to achieve. It’s a slow ardurous road, a dangerous road for some but those who make it look back with revulsion and some have gone on to aid others. But too many still live heinous existence because they know nothing better exists for they have been cloistered to accept.
I should like to recommend a book written by the person who wrote the Kite Runner, he wrote another book about women in afghanistan. If you are keen on knowing more its an exceptionally well written book about what many women have suffered and continue. It will make you shudder. Or may make you rethink about burqa being all that it is. IT ISN’T AND IT ISN’T PART OF THE KORAN, HADITHS OR SUNNAHS. ITS MAN’S TOOL TO KEEP A WOMAN A NON ENTITY.
