Anti-Pakistanism in India

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

I disagree with this. God forbid, some protesters may actually be protesting for a worthy cause. Peaceful protest ought to be protected in a democracy. Rather than be looked down upon. IMHO

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Truly shameful what happened to that Pakistani student in India. But isn’t it sweet that he has written a book called “Why I do not hate India” and has said he will visit thousands of times and that he has more friends in India than Pakistan. After suffering such a tragedy the ordinary person would become bitter and vindicative yet he has not bad mouthed his experience in India. Does it not mean he must have had many good experiences and treasured memories that overshadow this incident?

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

The story is similar to Mel Gibson arrest.

And… Mufti Naeemi arrest.

Point here is if someone really needs to get caught, other charges (being drunk publicly) can get added to make the arrest acceptable and palatable.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Just read both the links in OP. I am confused. What is the fuss about?

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Oh! I forgot to add above the example of ‘drunk driver’ of Diana and Dodi.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

It is hilarious because the man was charged with sedition for yelling pro Pakistan slogans.

Since when is yelling pro Pakistani slogans an act of treason?

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Maybe it was for mainly saying murdabad to the PM. College students who are of majority have had similar charges for defamation. I’m sure it counts for more if an elected leader says this. These charges were subsequently dropped. Anyway a trial will be run. According to this article he was arrested for being drunk and extorting money off passers by on a highway and when being arrested he raised the slogans. First he was arrested for breaching the peace then the additional charges were added.

OP, please read OP again. The link OP provided splains things clearly. OP may not appreciate OP simplifying - no - misrepresenting what was in the link OP provided.

In the meantime, ima gonna sit back and watch OP go against OP.

This should be more interesting than Cramer vs. Cramer

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Southie please read the Indian link and the Pakistani one. I am quoting from the Indian one.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

I like how my links about the attacked students and his friends helping him against the aggressors was glanced over. Or how he said he would visit India many times as he had many friends. Also my links on free medical camps by indian doctors in Pakistan as well as the treatment of Pakistani patients on health visas to India were glanced over.

Yes there is some bigotry at the government/authority level which us mere mortals do not have power to change. However in the articles the guy is arrested for extortion and the charges against the Kashmiri students were dropped as were the charges against the college students who were expelled for comparing the PM to Hitler/bin laden. It’s still wrong and shows increased censorship but just like prejudice against desis/Pakistanis/Middle eastern people in airports or in political propaganda in the US, UK does not mean the entire country is prejudiced the same is the case here. Or JOhn McCain’s “Bomb Eye-ran” speech would mean all Americans are prejudiced. Politicians of these countries have made dubious statements about Pakistanis and Indians. After 9-11 there have been claims of false charges, hate crimes and Guantanamo Bay related issues. Does that mean all Pakistani Americans living there feel it is not safe?

All this proves there is no wave of anti-Pakistani sentiment overall in India.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Zafra I did read that part. Here is the whole story

  1. This gentleman was allegedly drunk and extracting money from passersby - per the links
  2. Police confronted him - probably asking him to stop
  3. he probably refused - I am filling in the blanks
  4. scuffle ensued. He was going to be arrested for PUBLIC NUISANCE.
  5. He shouted Pakistan Zindabad Narendra Modi mu… bad in same sentence
  6. so sedition charges were ordered to be added by officials

Now comes the important point

Authorities have.given instructions to strictly follow the law. In other words, if any charges are inappropriate they will hopefully be dropped. Just as they correctly were in the Kashmir student incident.

I would suggest waiting and seeing what happens. Fair enough?

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

How do we know the sedition charges were not for saying death to the PM? Even then that’s not right. Freedom of speech and all but we’re assuming it was just for this. Even if it was like in previous case of sedition charges against students making collage of Modi with Hitler/Bin Laden it will be dismissed if it even makes to court. The police are being over-zealous. Makes more impact in the articles to say it is just for the slogans which were done for shock value.

I have heard visa regulations have been relaxed for Bangladeshi nationals. I hope it is also relaxed for Pakistani nationals. Just like the Zindagi channel for Pakistani dramas this would be a good initiative.

It’s strange but what happens during election propaganda time does not always follow policy afterwards.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

I came across this article and it seems they were not arrested but suspended. This was then revoked by the Vice chancellor of the University Prof Manzoor Ahmed who said only 10 were suspended for misconduct and damaging property. The other 57 then sat for their exams. There was widespread criticism of the initial decision by the university which shows that people did not accept it because it goes against basic freedoms. The second incident in another university was followed on from this and an inquiry is in place. I’m hopeful justice will take it’s course and they will be allowed to continue.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

The reason I am ignoring the whole Pakistani student being a great man is not a testament to India and its influence. Its a testament to the upbringing he had and how his parents raised him. India had nothing to do with the character of the Pakistani in question. And no nation state can claim rights to good parenting. So yes I am ignoring it as your assertion is unfair and illogical.

Southie my only question since when is it a illegal to say what you want in India? Pro Pakistani slogans regardless should not be a case for sedition.

The really sad part is that had this happened in Pakistan, that a Pakistani was arrested for sedition for shouting pro indian slogans you all would be ripping Pakistan apart. The double standards are appalling.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Looks like we have a communication problem. I have NOT stated I agree with the sedition charge. Based on the information provided, sedition charges are not warranted. But looks like it’s under review. The law will be applied strictly. All I said was let us wait and see what happens.

I am no lawyer. But I have full confidence the sedition charges will be removed. Can we please wait to see what happens?

You have a tendency to go for the dramatic. And that’s ok. But do recall i was against punish ing the Kashmir is students. And was for punishing the aggressors. .so not sure why the charge of hypocrisy. (Actually I don’t mind. We need more viewership in All Views General).

On that specific incident the students were reinstated. Let us hope fairplay is followed here also.

PS the whole thing is more abt polirics. The gentleman was a bjp opponent leader.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

I don’t attribute his greatness to India or anything like that. I was just showing that when he was attacked according to express tribune other students helped him. He also mentioned he did not face discrimination based on nationality or religion in his 2 years there. He said he made many friends andnone expressed anti-Pakistani sentiment. That’s what i was getting at. It seems one incident does not cancel out all his good experiences according to him. It is also his words that he wants to visit India a thousand times and that he has more friends in India than Pakistan. If an Indian student was attacked in Pakistan or if a tourist was attacked I wouldn’t want people to be alarmist and generalise the whole country as being anti-Indian. If the student says he had positive experiences and experienced hospitality for most of his time there and was not discriminated according to him/her I wouldn’t want to assume that this incident would cancel that out or that there is an anti-Pakistani wave. Also, if the student himself says he was popular on campus and does not explicitly say it was because of his background that he was attacked I wouldn’t want to rush into thinking it was because he was Indian (if the reverse situation occurred). I speak for myself but if i was attacked as a student in Pakistan i’d want to assume it was a random event, due to lack of security, maybe a grudge rather than being Indian.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Maybe there is a communication issue and some assumptions being made on what the reaction would be. We both agreed that sedition charges are wrong and should be dismissed like they have in other cases. We guessed that maybe he was arrested for extortion as well as other slogans before the sedition charges were added. We were trying to see the situation in a non-alarmist way.If a Pakistani had sedition charges put on him for saying the exact same 2 slogans i’d hope that in time with the court decision it would be dismissed. I wouldn’t rush in to judge. I’d let justice take its course of action. I’d say like I do here that the officers were being over-zealous with the sedition charges. He should still be charged for extortion if that is proven.

We both agreed it was wrong that college students were suspended and they should be reinstated. There was widespread criticism of the decision in India itself. In the article i posted 57 were reinstated. 10 were said to be dismissed for damage/misconduct by the vice chancellor Prof Ahmed after a disciplinary committee.

If a foreign student or even an Indian student went to Pakistan, on scholarship, was supporting the Indian team and was suspended then i’d say it was wrong, like i do with the college students who supported the Pakistani team, and they should be reinstated. If they do any misconduct or damage property (from the article) then i’d say the Pakistani university should follow its policies even if it means suspension. No difference in opinion.

We’re not representing all Indians and I’m sure some would do the equivalent of what you’re saying/doing. I just don’t think pointing out actions of gov/authorities and even isolated examples of universities is enough to say that in India with common Indians there is a big anti-Pakistani wave of sentiment outside of political propaganda during election time. I’ve provided plenty of examples opposite of that.

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

This guy was found to be a dunkarad. Drinking is prohibited in Islam. So this guy is a worthless idiot. Now he is in support of Pakistan!!! I am sure even Pakistanis will not be welcoming him in to Pakistan,if he ever `dares’ to go there. :cb:

Re: Anti-Pakistanism in India

Interestingly the sedition laws are unchanged since the time of the British raj and the exact same laws were used against Gandhi and other freeedom fighters. Sedition laws and other related laws are used quite regularly by police even sometimes for posts ins social media. It’s been misused quite often and used for all sorts of random situations. It’s also quite easy to charge someone with sedition. I think a bunch of MPs who were disrupting parliament with pepper spray were charged with sedition for bringing disrepute to democracy. mainly used to squash dissent. Scroll.in - News. Politics.
