Highly developed or not is irrelevant. People are people & people do stupid things. In this case, this is a mostly ghetto area and this woman was attacked by bunch of punks from ghetto, and they will go to jail for long time as they should.
When it comes to the US it is people will be people, and its in human nature to kill, rape and plunder? Lot of these convicted criminals are now joining the US army so they can kill, rape and plunder legally across the world.
A developed country means that people are generally better educated, better paid, have access to justice, the state has more resources and is better organised, therefore less crimes should be taking place. Its sad that people are justifying crime in the US by saying "Oh at least we aren't as bad as some third world country". But even this statement is debatable as living in the US you will feel safer compared to living in a third world country because there is a system in place, however the fact is there is more crime, so much so that we don't even bother to notice it around us until we pick up a copy of the local paper.

Many cannibals have been caught in the US. However this is an exceptionally rare crime, looking are murders, muggings, rapes would be a better yardstick.

People in US are seriously concerned about the issues with law and order, whether it is confined to gang related warfare in ghettos, white collar crime in boardrooms, or anything in between. You have to differentiate between people's concern and ow much play things like these get in media. We have had top business leaders jailed, governers removed and jailed, governers and senators forced to step down for personal hanky panky.
It is a huge country with many media outlets, from very local to national, some news gain national prominence and some dont. The media here, like pretty much anywhere else now, is a for profit entity interested in viewership and some stories make it some dont. Its not right but sadly that is what news media has become. so how much airplay it gets nationwide is not always an indicator of whether it is something acceptable to people.
SIck individuals do sick things...and groups of sick individuals do sick things. I do feel that US does not do enough to identify, prevent and treat sickos, whether it is mass shooters, or child predators...identify and provide therapy and counseling for people with diseased minds, that is a problem here and one that gets debated quite often, What the people have done is, pushed for programs and laws like amber alert for missing kids, for sex offender listing to try and keep people safe.
as far as criminals committing same or other crimes when they get released, that is a failure of the prison system, not just here, but worldwide. the worse the crime the more likely that the perp will do something else later.
There are all kinds of issues here, some become causes and get tackled pretty strongly, some dont. There are also people here who stick their heads in sand and pretend that nothing is wrong, and there are those who point elsewhere and say well atleast its not like "insert country name' but these topics are important, in an election year, it is pretty evident when candidates talk about issues effecting avg ppl in their areas, for some infrastructure is a bigger issue, for others crime, for many education resources, or local real estate taxes,... they do get discussed, they are decisive factors for voters, and while there is a lot of hoopla on liberal versus conservative, these issues matter, and it is evident in primaries more than anywhere.
In balance it is still one of the best places to live for some people, for others it is not.

Very recently, a mother in Dallas was sentenced for an extreme case of child abuse. She received 99 years. Earlier this month, Jerry Sandusky was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison for the same. As X2 mentioned, sickos are every where, but at least a fair law and order system is in place here.
And what do we have in Pakistan? Daughter of CM can beat the heck out of a bakery worker and nothing would happen.

It’s obviously only people who have never been to the West who think it’s safer for women in Pakistan or India or that they’re treated better.. The fact that a single woman can live alone here or walk down the street without attracting negative attention is something that’s conveniently ignored..
That isn’t the only difference.. An obvious one which has already been mentioned is how the victim is treated by the justice system and society in general (and your point about violent crime + rape only making the local news is not true.. Here in the UK it OFTEN makes the national media)..
In many Muslim countries if the victim isn’t punished by the law how likely is it that she’ll be able to marry (if she’s single) or her family/inlaws won’t feel shame or embarrassment at what happened and hide her away or maybe even blame her?

The justice system is part of the system that I mentioned. I am not stating that crimes don't take place anywhere else in the world. How many violent crime and rape cases take place in a year and how many do you see on the BBC news? The majority of them will not make it to the national news.
There you go again like some posters, that have to compare the US and Europe with third world countries in order to make themselves feel better.
Just because someone is getting murdered in Amman does it make it ok for 10 people to get murdered each week in New York? Which at some stage was 40 per week.
The difference is that the US has virtually unlimited resources. The trillions it has spent fighting wars for Israel it should be spending on the American people. It needs to get it priorities right.

^^^ True bad things happen in Pakistan as well, the cases that are highlighted made it to national media, whereas in the U.S they usually only make it to the local papers.
Also don't equate a highly developed country like the U.S with a third world country like Pakistan to make yourself feel better.
It's not about equation ..... it's about highlighting a bad thing in a society/country
This way i could put up thing about Pakistan on daily basis just watching ARY and Geo would be enough but then my mindset tells me also to look at other Places (atleast where i live and can judge) like Germany where Racism is a Problem ..... PPL have been killed due to it in the Past

Talking about highly developed country or third world country:
The notion of universal Human rights like all are equal, Women have the same rights as Men, No white is above the black, No black is above the white, That u may speak as u see fit (freedom of expression), The right of education for everyone, That government in place looks after the poor, that government support the widow and help her raise her children, that anyone is safe from harm regardless of what cast, creed, religion he/she belongs to
I would become a long post if i started to quote those historic facts but i guess u know where it all started ..... and now look at those societies that claim to be following these rules/standards and those who r actually following these rules/standards ;)

I think the thread is a generalization, there are good and bad people in every society.
this story was not posted to sterotype entire nation it is in response to secular fanatics who take great pleasure in labelling muslims as monsters and killers based on any random media story without scrutiny or questioning who is really resonsible. They will then sterotype entire nations as terroist on this incident.
If you take a look at the horrors that happen in the united states on a daily basis these same secularists will hypcritically not label entire nation as failed or crime infested they say will it is one off incident!

There is a consistancy to the stories come out of the Muslims world. Take Pakistan. One example of jahaluth after another. From the Red mosque, to Salman Taseer and Bhatti, to the Handicapped illiterate teenager accused of blasphemy, to the response to the Youtube video, to Malala Yusufzai. The secular "fanatics" like me, are trying to get you people to realize that your mixing of religion with politics is lunacy and the entire society is becoming dysfunctional as a result...
