Problem is not that Alcohol is not haraam. We all know that it is. Problem is this that this is not the first thread that I have seen that asks if you marry someone who drinks alchohol, and many many jumped to a definitive NO in response.
So why is that a problem exactly? Yes, I've read the entire post but that does not make it clear either.

Let us remind ourselves that Rishwat, Sood, Gambling, even Gheebat and gossiping are haraam too (maybe more haraam than drinking). hey what the heck, dating is haraam in islam and a gunaah-e-kabeera, and I can almost guarantee that almost all of us in this threaded have dated, touched and maybe even kissed a na meharm. Why is that we dont see threads like "will you marry a person who has taken interest based mortgage on his house, or the one who has dated before, or the one who gave rishwat to his boss for promotion"? Its because we have such a narrow and selective vision that we always count only those negative traits as Gunahe-kabeera that we dont have in us, or that are easy for us to stay away from.
There are choices and preferences. If someone wants to marry a drinker their choice,and if someone doesn't he/she doesn't. Why are people upset over the responses?

Tell me honestly Captain, is alcoholism the real issue of downfall of present muslim ummah and especially Pakistani community? If we look at the percentage, Alcohol related problem is almost a non issue in our society, but somehow it gets such a high visibility that real issues get the back seat. We all know that Alcohol is haram. That chapter has been closed 1400 years ago already. Take the blinders off (not talking to you but in general), and lets talk about the real issues, shall we.

Well this whole topic was about asking people if they'd like to marry someone who drinks or not. So people are only responding to the topic. So are you saying there's a problem because people are saying they don't want to marry people who drink or is there a problem because other social evils are not being discussed? If you think that not discussing other social evils is a problem then fine but there's absolutely no problem with people saying they wouldn't marry a drinker, particularly in a discussion about just that.

Afterwards you see them lying semi unconsciously on the street, in their own piss and vomit. Not knowing where they are, what they did, whom they did it to, what others did to them.

As for your death-obsession, It’s not just about living under the roof with your brother in deaths. It also goes for being alone with any na mehram; be it your best male buddy you know since high school that, or your favourite cousin, or whoever. They are all death.

Now you just sit tight, Le Pak, and wait for the more enlightened ones to tell you how not every drinker ends up in a horizontal position on a sidewalk in their own vomit and piss....and that some actually make it to their beds unscathed and without hurting others and can perform amazing mental and physical feats with an adroitness that is otherwise lacking in their more sober and unadulterated states. That is your punishment for not including the disclaimer that effects of alkyhaal vary from person to person.
