In case of unusual situations, abortion may have to be performed to save the mother’s life. This is permitted, not only during the first three months of pregnancy, but during any time during the pregnancy.
Mirch, read my posts, I am saying the same thing so why arguing over when fetus becomes human and when its not

As long as we're on this topic..... does anyone have information on whether its permissible to abort a baby which may have a genetic disorder?
In my personal opinion, you shouldn't abort but then I've never been in that situation so it must be tough to make that decision.
What is the Islamic ruling on this, does anyone know?
in my opinion abortion is wrong....but what about those women who take the "morning after pill"....isnt that the same thing? and some arguments even say that the contraceptive pill works in a similar way by preventing implantation of the fertilised egg....hence isnt that a form of abortion too?
Preventing pregnancy is totally different from getting rid of a baby after the deed is done.. You can't 'kill' something that doesn't yet exist..
I know some people think contraception is haram but there's no logic behind that seeing as tho even in the Prophet's (PBUH) days people were allowed to practise the withdrawal method and sex was described as being for pleasure, not just for procreation. Culturally tho a lot of ppl from 'back home' do seem to look down on it..

a friend of mine was told that his to-be-born baby is not growing mentally and will be a retarded baby and he should consider abortion. he refused saying that if this what Allah wants then so be it. Mashallah his boy is now 12 and excellent in sports in academics. Not just a normal kid but quite intelligent young man.

I do not dispute you , but I wanted to clarity as some people might go out and start talking that Islam allows abortion before 40 days since fetus has no ruh in it till then. As some do . They justify abortion for worldly reasons as permissible based on this reasoning.
If it is confirmed in the early period of pregnancy that a foetus suffers from a defect that can’t be treated and that will cause great suffering to the child, a number of scholars would say that it is permissible to abort, provided that the pregnancy is less than 120 days old.
A slightly more liberal opinion is that abortion within the first 120 days would be permitted if a child would be born with such physical and mental deformity as would deprive the child of a normal life. The opinion of at least two competent medical specialists is required.
Other scholars disagree and hold that abortion is not permitted in such cases.
There is almost unanimous opinion that after 120 days an abortion is not permissible unless the defect in the embryo puts the mother’s life in danger.
In recent times in Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khameni has issued a fatwa permitting abortion for foetuses under 10 weeks shown to have the genetic blood disorder thalassemia.
And also in Iran, Grand Ayatollah Yusuf Saanei issued a fatwa which permits abortion in the first three months for various reasons. Saanei accepted that abortion was generally forbidden in Islam, but went on to say:
But Islam is also a religion of compassion, and if there are serious problems, God sometimes doesn’t require his creatures to practice his law. So under some conditions–such as parents’ poverty or overpopulation–then abortion is allowed,
Grand Ayatollah Yusuf Saanei quoted in Los Angeles Times, December 29, 2000Widely quoted is a resolution of the Islamic jurisprudence council of Mekkah Al Mukaramah (the Islamic World League) passing a Fatwa in its 12th session held in February 1990. This allowed abortion if the foetus was: grossly malformed with untreatable severe condition proved by medical investigations and decided upon by a committee formed by competent trustworthy physicians, and provided that abortion is requested by the parents and the foetus is less than 120 days computed from moment of conception.

but you're saying islam allows abortion before 120 days, that's worse than 40 days, innit?

I agree. Some people might take it as a justification for worldly reasons.

While my wife was pregnant with our daughter that we should get a Amniocentesis test to determine if our baby will be born with Down syndrome and decide if we want to abort the baby. We refused the test and said whatever Allah will we will take it. Our daughter is Mashallah 10 years old now and she is so healthy and smart. We cannot thank Allah enough for that.

What about in cases of rape? Would u look down on ur own sister or mother for wanting an abortion if God forbid that were to happen?
extremely tough situation that would be and allah na karay that anyone would be in that situation but we should do things to please allah and not people. If this happens with anyone, may allah give them himmat to go through that and still not take the life of an unborn.

In most of the rape cases they can decide to go to doctor and get it taken care of before even the conception.
If circumstances do not allow and the mother is at a late stage of pregnancy she has many other options . e.g putting the baby up for adoption after she is born. I will adopt and raise one if Allah na karay I have to. Why kill an innocent little life for idiocy of a rapist ?
