I always wondered why Sala ( brother of wife) is used as a galee/bad word in Urdu/Hindi language.
You will hear every day:
us salay darzee nay mayree qameez bohat kharab see dee.
or
Salay income tax walay bohat khabeez hain,
or
Salay qasai nay aaj bohat kharab gosht dia hay etc etc.
To me it is such a nice relationship . My wife has 8 brothers , they respect me and they help me out in so many ways. I respect them all the more not because they help me out in many ways but because they are loving brothers of my lovely wife.
I find it funny that someone calling someone else sala , in a bad sense, will also be sala of someone else . No ?
Can anybody shed some light on when and how this word became a galee/ bad word in Indo-Pak subcontinent ?
I think the proper term is hamzulf but not a lot of people use that in their speech. It's the taporis that made this term famous enough for the directors to use it in their movies & now we see it's effect in our society.
we dont think what this galee exactly means and us eit very loosely. I’ve seen father’s playfully calling their sons, Sala … ‘yeah sala to meri baat he nahi sunta’
