Play for Pride.
Pybus Asks Pakistan to Play for Pride
CAPE TOWN, South Africa: Pakistan coach Richard Pybus has called on his batsmen to “play for pride” when they take on South Africa in the second and final Test starting at Newlands here on Thursday (tomorrow).
Pakistan, beaten by 10 wickets in the first Test in Durban, go into the match as massive underdogs against a rampant South African side which is on a record streak of six successive Test wins. South Africa also have the incentive of knowing that a win or draw to secure the series will bring them the International Cricket Council’s World Test Championship crown.
Pakistan’s problems were compounded when all-rounder Abdur Razzaq was said to be struggling with a foot injury and was unlikely to be fit for the Test. “We’ve got to play for pride,” said Pybus. “We have some quality cricketers. We got to have a good look in the mirror and produce the goods.”
Pybus singled out the batting of the experienced middle-order as the biggest problem, but said the performances of inexperienced openers, Taufiq Umar and Salim Elahi, who put on 77 and 50 in Durban, was a positive aspect. “The two openers batted well up front and that’s been a problem for Pakistan for a while. Our seamers bowled okay, but overall our batting was so disappointing. We just didn’t apply ourselves.” Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan, the side’s most experienced batsmen, mustered just 116 runs between them in two innings in Durban as South Africa’s pace bowlers made good use of a bouncy pitch.
Pybus acknowledged that Pakistan’s long sequence of matches played away from home might have contributed to the poor performance in the first Test. Pakistan have not played at home since a tour by New Zealand was cancelled after one Test in May, following a bomb blast in Karachi which killed 14 people outside the hotel where the teams were staying.
A ‘home’ series against Australia was played in Sri Lanka and Sharjah in October, and Pakistan played a series in Zimbabwe before travelling to South Africa.
“Our boys have been on the road with only five or six days at home. Not being able to play Test matches at home maybe has caught up with us,” said Pybus.
The withdrawal of fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar also hit the side, admitted Pybus. Shoaib left the team before the Test series, but arrived in Durban for a concert by Bollywood stars. :rotfl:
Pakistan captain Waqar Younis said that as far as he was aware Shoaib did not contact any of his team-mates while he was in Durban. **“It’s the (Pakistan Cricket) Board’s duty to find out where he is and what he’s doing,” ** said Waqar.
Waqar took a painful blow on his right forearm while batting towards the end of the match in Durban. He said it was not a serious injury and he bowled in the nets in Durban on Monday.
Pakistan’s ploy of playing an extra batsman in Faisal Iqbal, at the expense of a bowler, was a failure and it is likely that fast bowler Mohammad Zahid, who was surprisingly left out of the first Test team, will be called up.
South Africa are likely to field an unchanged team. Skipper Shaun Pollock promised there would be no let-up. “Everything starts again in Cape Town,” he said. “We’ve got to keep moving forward.”
Pollock said the South Africans were not thinking specifically about claiming the World Championship. “It’s at the back of your mind and it would be the cherry on the top, but we’ve got to go out and win Test matches. If we do that, the championship will take care of itself. We try to concentrate on the game, thinking too far ahead is always dangerous.”

At least Pakistan has performed well abroad this year but recently they are ![]()
This is away records of all teams in 2002 excluding neutral venues
