Pak ‘notion’ on Nato strike incorrect: Pentagon

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon on Wednesday rejected the ‘notion’ as incorrect that the Nato attack that killed 24 Pakistan soldiers was intentional, Geo News reported.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little told reporters: “It is important to let the investigation unfold, but the notion that this was an intentional attack on Pakistani military is incorrect.”

He refuted the reports that the attack on Pakistani post by NATO forces over the weekend was “intentional”, and conceded that US-Pak relationship was going through a very difficult phase.

“Whatever happened over the weekend on the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan is a tragedy. We express regret for it and as well as condolences for the loss of life. In no way shape of form should this be construed as an intentional attack on Pakistan by the United States. That is simply incorrect,” Little said.

He was responding to statements from Pakistan which alleged that the US forces intentionally attacked the Pakistani post on the Af-Pak border that resulted in the death of some 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistan is furious over the incident and in retaliation has blocked the NATO supply route to Afghanistan, boycotted the upcoming Bonn conference and asked US to vacate the secretive Shamsi air base, which is used by the CIA for drone attacks.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) is leading the investigation into the incident and has been asked to submit its report by December 23.

Little, however, refused to either confirm or deny news reports of US vacating the Shamsi air base as demanded by Pakistan.

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

**WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama is not considering offering formal condolences to Pakistan over the deaths of 24 soldiers in a Nato airstrike last week, a report in the New York Times stated.
**
The report, quoting administration officials, said that Cameron Munter, the United States Ambassador in Pakistan, had requested the White House to issue a formal video statement from Barack Obama so that rapid deterioration of relations between the two countries could be prevented.
The White House, however, refused the request and said that expressions of remorse offered by senior administration officials and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton were enough.

The US president was unlikely to say anything further on the matter in the coming days, the officials told New York Times. — DawnNews

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

we dont even need their fake apologies ... their apology wont bring back the lives!

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

US said it was not intentional and also Obama doesnt want to apologize

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

According to dunya news the chief of army staff has allowed the forces stationed on the Afghanistan border to forego the chain of command and respond to any aggression from the NATO/isaf forces in the future.

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

wsj.com reports Pak cleared the attack when they said there were no Pak troops in that area. And ask why Pak troops fired on their helis

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

What should have Pakistani army done if the Americans were flying 2.5 kms inside Pakistani borders? So what does wsj say about the coordinates that Pakistan army had given them regarding their check posts? According to Pakistani army within 7 minutes the nato forces informed the Pakistani soldier posted in the control center that they had attacked one of the check posts. The American media is not that independent as much as they want us to believe we have seen that during Raymond Davis affair. They follow the line given to them by their govt in guise of national interests.

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

well, you can read what I read at wsj.com yourself. The point is why would Pakistan tell them there are no troops in that area? secondly if the Pak troops know it is Americans why do they fire at the helicopters? That made the American think it not Pak troops. Atleast that is what the soldiers interviewed have said acc to wsj.

They are working towards a dec 23 completion of the investigation which will include review of pictures from the air

We should really await facts - neither side knows them yet

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

Has any one seen any statement regarding this issue from the supreme commander of armed forces?

According to all news sources Kiyani has given the border troops permission to retaliate in the future. Uptil now the army stationed there was only provided the weapons to target taleban now they are thinking to provide them weapons for border control as well.

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

and they dont even have to ask for permission from head quarters before responding! good job!

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

Director General Military Operations Major General Ashfaq Nadeem has rejected Nato’s offers of carrying out joint investigation into the Nato raid on Pakistan’s military checkposts in Mohmand Agency. During a media briefing on Tuesday, he said that there was no outcome of such joint probe into the past attacks. He reiterated that the Nato deliberately attacked Pakistani checkposts and continued targeting them for hours. **“It was an open aggression and unprovoked attack,” he added.** The DG MO said it would premature to say anything about motives behind the attack

Desperation to open up the borders to NATO containers? we will see what happens regarding Shamsi Airbase after 11 Dec, who is going to tell us when Shahbaz and Pasni airbase will be taken back from the Americans?

http://tribune.com.pk/story/300047/supply-routes-to-be-restored-only-if-nato-apologises-ahmad-mukhtar/Supply routes to be restored only if NATO apologises: Ahmad MukhtarPublished: November 30, 2011

****ISLAMABAD: **Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar said on Wednesday that the supply routes for Nato troops will be restored only if Nato apologises for the “unprovoked attack” that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, Express News reported.

**
Mukhtar also said that Shamsi Airbase will be vacated by December 11 and no drone planes would be allowed to fly from the base after that.

Earlier in a Cabinet Defence committee meeting, Pakistan had decided to ask the US to leave Shamsi Air Base within 15 days and blocked ground supply routes through Pakistan to US forces in Afghanistan.

Washington was sent notices to vacate the narrow strip located in Balochistan following the deadly Nato attack.

Three sources, who declined to be identified because of the issue’s sensitivity, said that US planning was under way to leave the base.

The cross-border incident escalated tensions between the two countries and the US military is conducting an investigation to find out exactly what happened on the ground. The moves by the Pakistanis to block ground supply routes and the air base were not expected to significantly hinder US operations.

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

Previously WSJ had posted the American take on the attack now they are presenting the Pakistani side. Pakistan from the very first day is saying that Americans had been provided them wrong information from the beginning, like after the attack the Americans told Pakistanis that they had attacked some Area about 8 kms away from the post. And then after 7 minutes they told the person in the control centre that they have attacked the first base as they were being attacked from there.

First of all I hold our own army responsible for this incident by providing air bases to the Americans and giving them approval to strike Pakistani areas at will. By this not only have have completely surrendered Pakistani sovereignty but also caused a large population of the country to be polarized. And then the Americans have the latest surveillance equipment, which they claim is very precise, and according to our army they have provided the Americans data of Pakistani posts on the border. So what did really happen??

Pakistan Denies Clearing NATO Strike

**Pakistan Friday denied claims by U.S. officials that it had given the go-ahead for a North Atlantic Treaty Organization strike on two Pakistan border posts last weekend, unaware that its soldiers were in the area.****Pakistan’s military said in a statement that U.S. officials had in fact given them wrong information about where NATO forces planned to launch the strike.

****Minutes later, NATO helicopters attacked a different position, leveling two Pakistan army border positions and killing 24 Pakistani soldiers, the statement said.
**
The Pakistan army claimed in the statement that U.S. officials at a border coordination center later apologized privately for giving faulty coordinates.

The army denied the “border posts” were temporary campsites – as U.S. officials claimed in an article in the Wall Street Journal on Friday – but full military positions.

The statement repeated Pakistan’s position that the NATO strikes, which they said lasted over an hour, were “unprovoked and indiscriminate.”

Pakistan’s army said it had no forewarning of attacks on the posts.

U.S. and Afghan officials say NATO and Afghan forces were on a joint patrol near the border just before midnight last Friday, when they came under fire from the Pakistan side of the frontier.

What happened next is shrouded in confusion. Some U.S. and Afghan officials have said the firing came from Pakistani military positions, which Pakistan denies.

The attacks have hit relations, which were already in trouble due to rising anti-U.S. feeling in Pakistan that has been stoked by the Central Intelligence Agency’s campaign of unmanned drone strikes and the May attack by Navy SEALs which killed Osama bin Laden.

President Barack Obama has refrained from apologizing for the attack, despite pressure to do so from State Department officials.

The U.S. military is conducting an investigation in to what happened. The results of the investigation are due for release on Dec. 23.

Pakistan has blocked NATO from using Pakistan territory to resupply its troops and given the U.S. 15 days to vacate an airbase that Washington has used in the past to launch drone strikes.

ISLAMABAD:The cabinet will hold another special meeting next week to formally review the country’s role in the war in Afghanistan.

**Pakistan’s top civilian and military leaders have said that the country will not go on working on the same terms in the war on terror. Last week, Gilani told CNN that there would no more be “business as usual” with the US.

Re: 25 Pak Soldiers killed by NATO shelling

Now this is funny…

We respect Pakistan’s sovereignty: US

WASHINGTON:** US State Department has said that America respects Pakistan’s sovereignty evident form US Central Command’s (CENTCOM) quick steps to launch a probe into Mohmand tragedy for the very reason, Geo News reported.
**
Spokesman Mark Toner in State Department’s daily briefing said that US CENTCOM had tasked a team with an in-depth investigation into the Nato’s friendly fire, which martyred more than a dozen Pakistani troops deployed at an outstation next to Afghan border.
**
“US wants to make sure no such incident comes to pass in the future”, Toner said.**

When asked why US was shy of offering an apology for this fatal tactical error, he said the truth was still out there, adding that was why Pakistan had been invited on board a US probe into the tragedy.

Commenting on Pakistan’s decision of a quick retaliation to such hostility in the days to come, he said the probe underway also aimed at ascertaining the implications of this strategy-shift by Pakistan. However, it was a Defence Department matter and only they could give a better answer to it, Toner added.

To another question, he said, in order to rule out any misunderstanding that could lead to any unforeseeable estrangement, we were in tight loop with our Pakistani counterparts since the Mohmand tragedy. %between%

refuted by Pakistan already. and also mentioned aboue "fake" detail being shared just couple of minutes ago before the attack.
