Zakat Question - urgent

Is it necessary to tell a person that amount given to him / her is on account of Zakat?

Many people consider it awkward to know that they are being paid Zakat. (For example If someone wants to give zakat to people who were economically good last year, but can’t afford to purchase clothes for children due to inflation, etc)

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

NO...you do NOT have to!...it's actually a good idea NOT to tell to save him from unnecessary humiliation.

i think the person given does NOT require to be poor in 'traditional' sense coz poverty is subjective...i think anyone who can NOT afford basic necessities of life can qualify to receive zakaat.

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Any reference?

If anyone reconfirms that whether the amount being paid to him / her is on account of Zakat then how to tackle the situation?

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

well, i do NOT have any references...this is what i know! it's logical though...it makes sense to keep it a secret unless that person asks. i've heard it from my Dad who was quite knowledgeable in deenii matters.

you may want to inquire from an 'aalim to be sure. :)

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Thanks KKF.. Lets see what other people have to say.

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

welcome...sure! :)

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Yes I have heard the same, no need to tell tht it's zakat,

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

But DA when you give some money to people in Ramadan, they do get the notion that it might be on account of Zakat. How to tackle this?

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

if he/she is so concerned...let him/her ask the question whether or not the money is from zakaat...you don't have to tell him/her voluntarily! agree?

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Yes I agree wth kff, I think ppl understand but they never ask you

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Agree.

Is it necessary to pay zakat in cash? Can't I buy clothes and give them saying its a gift?

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

sure, you can...but, if i trust the person that he will use the money wisely, i would give him cash...the person will have more flexibility to buy what he actually needs.

here in the west, we give prepaid debit cards or gift cards or cash.

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

OK that can be solved if I ask my Ammi / Abu to take the children with them for shopping and get them what they want

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Exactly I think you can give anything but you should be sure tht the person need tht thing n it will be useful for him, like what my mum do she buys rashan for the Ramadan all flour, besan, rice, ghee, eggs, sugar, milk all this stuff n distribute it

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

sure...as long as they get help, it's fine!

however, kia Khayaal hai aapkaa k agar vo aapke abbu ammi ke saath gaye to vo takalluf ke sabab shaayad kuchh kah na sakeN? mere Khayaal se naqd de deN taa k unko takalluf na karnaa paRe aur unkii zarooriyaat unke Hisaab se porrii ho jaayeN...he may also feel embarrassed...???

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Thats a good idea, but the family I want to help is very nearer to me and I myself feeling a little awkward to pay zakat to them. May be I should not count money given to them as Zakat

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

But I have heard if you want to give zakat look who is near to you, means check our family first, if there are no needy ppl thn distribute it to others

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

Yes its true, but giving zakat in your family is not always that easy

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

brother, you have the option to give from zakaat fund or from your pocket as sadaqa...he will be helped in for sure.

you should not feel embarrassed or awkward because Allah has allowed you to give zakaat to anyone except your parents...people give zakaat to their own siblings...it's NOT an embarrassment on your or the recipient's part...this is their Haq as ordained by Allah.

but again, at the end, it's your choice...what i am suggesting is that it's OK to give zakaat to near/dear ones.

Re: Zakat Question - urgent

I agree, now it's on you how convenient it is for ou because I also heard this when you Sadqa or zakat, that person should not be hurted by your gesture
