brother, you have the option to give from zakaat fund or from your pocket as sadaqa...he will be helped in for sure.
you should not feel embarrassed or awkward because Allah has allowed you to give zakaat to anyone except your parents...people give zakaat to their own siblings...it's NOT an embarrassment on your or the recipient's part...this is their Haq as ordained by Allah.
but again, at the end, it's your choice...what i am suggesting is that it's OK to give zakaat to near/dear ones.
KKF sometimes people consider it embarrassing to accept zakat considering that they are in temporary financial crisis. Thats where my problem starts. I want to help the family, but without embarrassing them.

ok then...pay as sadaqa then :) Good Luck brother...so nice of you that you think of others at a time when people mostly think of themselves alone! :)
Is it necessary to tell a person that amount given to him / her is on account of Zakat?
Many people consider it awkward to know that they are being paid Zakat. (For example If someone wants to give zakat to people who were economically good last year, but can't afford to purchase clothes for children due to inflation, etc)
Peace muqawwee,
The original meaning of the word "ZAKAT" is 'purification' (incase earned legal way, illegal earnings not cosidered) and growth' (ZAKAT is arabic word). Giving ZAKAT means 'giving a specified percentage on certain properties to certain clases of needy people. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a small portion for those in need. ZAKAT, its a 'Iba'adt' as narrated in Hadith that ZAKAT is taken from rich peopls to distribute/support among needy.
*Those Who Are Entitle for Zakat (Mentioned in Chapter 9 Verse 60):
*
The poor, classified as someone who doesn't have sufficient resources to meet half of his/her basic needs
The needy, classified as someone who doesn't have sufficient resources to meet all of his/her basic needs
Collectors and distributors of Zakat (as in wages),
To those who have recently embraced Islam, for example, to compensate them for difficulties they may face as a result
In order to free a slave
To support debtors who genuinely cannot pay off their debts
In the cause of Allah, which is everything intended to champion Allah's word, and
To support the traveler stranded far from home.
I think it is narrated in hadith to when you are about to give charity there your left hand shouldn't know what your right hand did (i.e. given Zakat or Charity).
what if a person is not earning for 8-9 months but have some gold, is it abligatory for him to pay tha zakat
Peace AB,
In case of gold is used by a woman as jewelry within a woman's social status than No Zakat is payable. But Zakat must be paid for the quantity which is beyond that.
