YouTube in Pakistan

Re: YouTube in Pakistan

1984 is a book about a society where the government monitors its citizens, their thoughts, beliefs and actions, and punishes anybody who speaks out against the society or their leaders.

If you let the government start regulating what people can say and think, even if it seems like a small matter, you set a dangerous precedent where, if that government becomes oppressive, the people have no way to change things legally. Any dictatorship, from Mussolini's Italy to the Nazis, began by repressing ideas and thought. The US, with the Patriot Act, actually started taking steps towards censorship.

People have every right to be offended, and they can show their displeasure by not using Google's services for a day, a week, or even indefinitely. I'm not talking about the social effect. I'm talking about the idea of allowing the government to have the power to block things on the internet. Iran did it during the elections. Egypt did it during the revolution. Is that the type of government we want?

Re: YouTube in Pakistan

I understand that part but here the blocking was done by coming under pressure from awaam itself, our government is busy looking at ways of making money as kickbacks they have no idea of how to "direct" awaam's thought process, the government's step of blocking Youtube was a "reaction".
