KARACHI: Shahid Afridi's effort to convince Mohammad Yousuf to reverse his retirement decision went in vain when the seasoned batsman turned down the all-rounder's request.

According to a source, Afridi, who is all set to captain Pakistan in the upcoming assignments, contacted Yousuf to change his mind but he refused by saying his decision is final.

Yousuf announced retirement from international cricket after the board imposed an indefinite ban on him in the aftermath of Pakistan’s disastrous tour of Australia.

Afridi wanted the experienced duo of former captains – Younis Khan and Yousuf who were considered the backbone of Pakistan cricket before both were banned – for the tour of England, the source said.

“Afridi is aware of the tough English conditions and that is why he wants both the top batsmen in the team,” said the source.

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

It would be great if M. Yousuf come back.

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

he didnt turned down the request
he said he will ask from his elders n than tell

the cricinfo jury snub probably did not help

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

I dont understand why you have to ask your fellow mullahs if you want to play for Pakistan. When you have claimed in the past all you wanted to do was serve your country and now the call is coming from the captain of the national team that we need you in the test matches in England, he declines (until consulting with fellow elder mullahs). Thats not patriotic! That's pathetic...He is backing you up and you are showing your true form.

I hope he doesn't come back. Pakistani fans don't deserve him. Instead of looking at his performance as a batsman they judge him based on his faults.

Captaincy aside this guy is best you've got. Without him you depend on likes of Fawad and Faisal.

Some people are really never happy. Had Yousuf accepted the request and reversed his decision you would've been like 'look at the greedy mullah, all he wants is moolah, no principle'. Now that he didn't immediately accept the request you are whining 'oh this is not patriotism'. Come on, give him a break.

I agree, he shouldn't come back.

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

he has completely lost it. teenage girls are probably more stable and decisive than Yousuf.

show some self respect and stay retired.

No thanks Yousuf. We don't want more oaths taken to remove captains.

That's rite...Pakistani's don't deserve Yousuf...because us Pakistani's deserve better than attenion seeking, self-centered greedy basta*ds like Yousuf.

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

Afridi ne tu gongloon se mitti jhari hai hey keh ker:chai:

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

Can we know why he was banned? Official reason?
He reacted by punishing himself. lol!

Maybe he thought Ijaz Butt was another Dr Nasim Ashraf and would get him to reverse his decision based on his conditions and pay him more (like Nasim Ashraf did to get him back from ICL).

I love and respect the man for his belief and committement to the deen, but he is emotionally very weak. Deep Faith is supposed to fix that in my opinion.

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

even though he would be a good addition to the side, I think he should not come back. that will be better for his reputation. the problem with our nation is that when we are winning matches, no one cares. but if we start losing, all sorts of crap starts coming the way of the players. we dont even realize that sportsmen are people too, that they can some times not perform well.
let this be a lesson to our team, to our cricket board and to the whole nation; if you keep losing your good players like that you might as well end up at the bottom of the ladder.
but i doubt we will ever learn anything from this episode.

Re: Yousuf firm on retirement despite Afridis request

i am fan of yosuf the batter but not yosuf the captain. Also taking oath against captain is also not a good thing as islam orders to obey your commander no matter how bad he is. Right way is to remove him in right way but in battle field one can not leave his commander alone even from islamic point of view

janab, since when was cricket pitch a battlefield? :hehe:

let Yousuf do what he wants, he doesn’t believe in patriotism, good for him. :k:

Afridi was also part of the gang that took the oath. any comments on that?

he was not .....u got any proof

for your and yaasir bhaijaan’s reading pleasure. I look forward to the response with baited breath.

LAHORE – Pakistan cricket is facing a fresh controversy as the video recording of the recent PCB inquiry committee proceedings has been leaked, carrying visuals of Intikhab Alam and Aaqib Javed suspecting Kamran Akmal’s involvement in match fixing during Australia tour.
A TV channel aired the video recordings of the statements made by officials and players in February-March.

Intikhab and Aaqib, who were coaches during that disastrous tour Down Under, were seen telling the committee members that they wanted to send back Shoaib Malik from New Zealand because of his negative attitude but on the insistence of captain Mohammad Yousuf they did not take that step.

Aaqib, when asked about the performance of wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal in the second Test in Sydney where he dropped four catches and missed a run-out, is heard saying that there was something fishy.

“I have reservations over the way he (Kamran) missed the run-out. when I saw it I couldn’t believe it. How could he miss such a big run-out. I can’t say 100 per cent there is match-fixing involved but I have my strong suspicion,” Aaqib said.

“I know all about it because I was a victim of it. In 1998 I presented evidence against players but the Judge who was hearing the inquiry ended the matter,” he added.
Aaqib, a former Test pacer, who was removed after the tour, also expressed suspicions about the performance of Rana Naved in a T20 match in Australia.

“We have heard things about him as well,” Aaqib was heard telling the committee that Younis Khan faced problems because he did not encourage players when they performed well and that he remained aloof from other players.

He also talks about how Shoaib Malik told him about a meeting held at Inzamam-ul-Haq’s residence by some players including Yousuf, Afridi, Malik, Kamran, Saeed Ajmal and Misbah-ul-Haq, where they took an oath that they would stick together and not tolerate any injustice from Younis Khan.
