I called them “union” because marriage as we know it did not exist. It was a declaration of their relationship in front of their community, which is the function that marriage serves.
If you want to make the distinction between “marriage” (a religious ceremony) and “union” (a civil ceremony) then I agree. I do think that in a secular country, both should have the same legal benefits. If you’re trying to say that same sex couples were not allowed to “marry” thousands of years ago, then that’s false.
